I kinda ignored this band for a while because NME were touting them as something special and i'm pretty tired of NME's overhyping of bands. But I read a lot of magazines and pretty soon I started to notice all the very positive review their latest album was getting. I'd seen pictures of the band playing live and had dismissed them as a G. G. Allin style freakshow.. I knew that they had some PC baiting monikers (Mustard Gas, Concentration Camp et al). Today my curiosity got the better of me and I downloaded the album. And upon first listen it's really fucking good. A proper pulverising racket that's chock full of searing guitars, pounding drums, "I EAT GLASS FOR A LIVING" vocals and, more importantly, an abundance of great songs that are positively buzzing with hooks. I'll be listening to this a lot more. But i'm loving what i'm hearing so far.

This is indeed an excellent album. Hidden World and the Year of the Pig EP are great as well.

I'm planning to check those out as well. I really didn't expect the band to be as talented as they are. There are several songs that had me grinning at the speakers in astonished glee at the sheer propulsive, spine-tingling brilliance of the noise they were emitting. I doubt the music will be everyone's cup of tea and i'm not certain they stand much of a chance of finding mainstream success with a name like Fucked Up and the aggressiveness of their songs (and live performances) but stranger things have happened (though not often). Right now though i'm surprised and more than a little impressed. They remind me of a lot of bands I really like. They have the quiet/loud dynamic of the Pixies. The aggresiveness of Black Flag. The aural complexity of The Arcade Fire. The epic scope of prime Smashing Pumpkins. I'm not saying that they sound exactly like any of those bands or that the will definitely appeal to someone who likes those bands. They don't and they possibly won't. But I detect some of the things impressed me about the music of those bands in the music of Fucked Up.

I don't know. I find any band that uses its name in this particular way to gain attention is compensating for something. Plus the fact that they push buttons that really shouldn't be pushed with regards to Nazism and fascism (unless you're Slayer, which makes it seem that Fucked Up is ripping them off). Still, when you have bands like At The Drive-In and The Mars Volta having success, stranger things have happened.

These guys really put on an awesome show and I was blown away by them when I'm not a particularly big fan of the type of music. I also got kicked in the face.
