From imdb

Hollywood studios appear to be abandoning Tuesday as the traditional release day for new DVDs, Video Business observed on its website Tuesday. The trade publication noted that Paramount, Sony and Anchor Bay Entertainment are all releasing new titles on different days in the fourth quarter. Paramount, in fact, plans to release three films on December 28, a Sunday. The films are Eagle Eye, Ghost Town and The Duchess. Meanwhile Sony is releasing The House Bunny and Anchor Bay, Traitor on December 19, a Friday. Video Business has noted that the non-Tuesday releases will likely encourage retailers to break the official street date since it will be difficult to police the movable dates. Tom Paine, owner of the DVD Now chain, told the publication, "Everyone will just have their own street date ... and if stores have their own dates, it will just be too chaotic."

Not sure if this was news or not, but I never really thought about the reasoning behind Tuesdays being the official release day for DVD.

I wouldn't say that the tradition of new release Tuesdays has been abandoned. This is simply a case of getting as much product to the shelves for the key 4th-Quarter sales. That's it. SALES....

i think it is an off shoot of what happened last year.. you had The Kingdom, Rush Hour 3 and a few other titles that were supposed ot be released on Dec 25 which if memory serves corect that was a tuesday.. and due to that, they released alot of those flicks early, like the firday before hand, so that the last minute shoppers would have those new titles to buy.

Im thinkin that is what is happening this year.. although, i dont know why they wouldnt put Eagle Eye and some of the others out pre-christmas, because Eagle Eye would def sell alot of copies just prior to xmas!

I'm not down with the idea. I like it all in once a week on schedule. it's just easy to remember. I don't want to go web hunting which studios are releases what, when and where.

Just like movies coming out in theaters where its usually FRIDAYS comes out WEDS. So in reference to releases on DVD its nothing new here. But since the economy is in the shitters as we speak I can see why. Just recently KUNG FU PANDA came out on A SATURDAY which was originally SUNDAY.
Whateva days works for the studios is fine w/ me being that I work at a well known chain where I work in the DVD Department.
One thing, if they are going for this given date i'd wish they stick to it.:D

Agreed. Tuesday used to always be a day to look forward for me. Plus I don't like the sound of retailers delaying some releases.

Releasing on any day would make keeping track of dates a pain in the ass, so most retailers (as noted originally, I think) will just put them on the shelves when the title is shipped to them.

Having Tuesdays as the general day is great, 'cause it wouldn't be as confusing - once again, as stated earlier.

It's not uncommon for other days to have a new title. I remember that ID4 came out on a Wednesday or Thursday. Jerry Maguire came out on a Friday. Strangeness.
