I just won an auction on eBay for a slew of rare metal cassette tapes, and it gave me an idea for a thread. Does anyone listen to tapes on a semi-regular basis? Is there one album that you have on cassette that you don't listen to on any other medium for whatever reason? Maybe you've had it for 20 years. Maybe you found it at a yard sale or a flea market. Personally, the only cassettes I still listen to are Judas Priest's Painkiller and Morbid Angel's Formulas Fatal to the Flesh. There is something cool about owning a rare cassette tape (not that Judas Priest is rare; I'm mainly thinking of the tapes I just bought). Plus, I dig the raw sound of a cassette tape. Certain types of music benefit from lo-fi audio.

Anyway, here are the tapes I picked up recently. I had to gloat.

Kreator-Extreme Aggression
Holy Terror-Mind Wars
S.O.D.-Speak English or Die
Prong-Rude Awakening
Morbid Angel-Covenant
Sanctuary-Into the Mirror Black
Pestilence-Spheres
Reverend-World Won't Miss You
Toxik-Think This
Grim Reaper-Fear No Evil

Because my 2005 Ford Taurus was ordered with a fucking CASSETTE player instead of a CD player (I can't understand why the cassette option is even fucking AVAILABLE in 2005) - I listen to cassette's everyday in the car.

For some reason, CVS still sells blank ones in their stores. So I boughtta buncha 'em, and recorded my favourite CD's onto them... The nice thing is, each side is 45 minutes, so I get two CD albums to one cassette tape.

I have the car kit for cassette players for my MP3 player or discman.... But I don't like fuckin' with it, it's just easier to push a tape in and let it play. It pisses me off though, cuz I STILL can't fucking fathom why a cassette player would be a gaddamned option at the car factory for a 2005 car.

You're my fuckin hero JJ!!! I miss being able to eject a tape in my truck and being able to throw it in the seat and putting another one in with no worries about the tape getting messed up like a cd is so easy to scratch or crack. Plus if something happened to a tape I could usually take it apart and fix it. I dont however miss having to fast forward from one end of the cassette to the other to get to a different song.

Yeah, rewinding and fast-forwarding can be a pain in the ass. You're right, though. It's too easy to scratch a CD. And God forbid you touch one with your bare hands.

Considering I grew up in the eighties my entire collection was on cassette up til the early 90's. Since then I've replaced them all and the only cassettes I've still got are:

Bathory - Blood Fire Death
Megadeth - Peace Sells
Iron Maiden - Live After Death
Gamma Ray - Heading for Tomorrow
Helloween - Keeper of the Seven Keys I and II
Candlemass - Nightfall

I haven't listened to these on cassette for ages, mainly cause they've all degenerated a certain extant from overuse.

Yeah, Blood Fire Death has such an epic sound, it was the first black metal band I got into. Although you could argue he was moving more towards a viking metal sound. Hammerheart takes it the full way into viking metal, another great album.

I've still got quite a few for listening to in my car. Most albums I didn't like enough to buy on CD I usually bought on cassette, when they were still fairly widely available (either that or vinyl).
