View Full Version : Musical acts you just don't "get"..

I keep seeing the Flaming Lips banner ad up there, and it led me to think to post on musical acts with a degree of popularity that you don't get.

For instance, the Lips stuff I've heard is alright--it's nothing fucking spectacular though. Yet a lot of people I know love this band (same with fucking Wilco--wtf?).

Another I really never got is Tori Amos--had an ex g/f that simply worshipped Ms. Tori's music--I thought it was over-precious, clattering, annoying bullshit. I've never understood the appeal of Tori Amos.

I could go on and on but what are some of yours?

I can't understand Nickelback or Linkin Park's popularity. Their music is lifeless, unimaginative, god-fucking-awful garbage, that hurts my ears.

I'll second everything that everybody else has listed - except Tom Petty. I fucking LOVE Tom Petty. I've been a fan for almost 20 years now and he is without a doubt my favorite artist. Ever.

But others that I don't get:

Pink Floyd - I like some of their tunes but overall they just don't do it for me
The Beatles - I like them all as solo acts, but together not so much
Radiohead - their music bores the shit out of me
Pretty much any and all of the American Idol alumni
Bruce Springsteen - he's got a couple of decent tunes, but overall... meh.
John Mellencamp - Can't stand any of his shit
Any and all boy bands
Keane - I just can't fathom how anyone can enjoy that shit
Amy Winehouse
Most of the recent female "artists" - Adele, Corrine Bailey-Ray, Natasha Bedingfield, etc. None of them strike me as particularly talented or interesting

I'm sure there are more, but that's a start

I agree with The Flaming Lips/Wilco. There are maybe two songs I really like from each, but that's about it. Also agree with Weezer, Springsteen, and Coldplay

Judas Priest
Cannibal Corpse
Sublime
Radiohead (I like a few of their songs, but I definately don't see what's so incredible about them)
Oasis
Green Day
King Diamond/Mercyful Fate
Muse
Modest Mouse
The Doors
Death Cab For Cutie
The White Stripes
David Bowie (I think he's fine, but I don't understand why so many people just worshiped his music. T.Rex was better)
Velvet Underground
Tupac (He's a solid rapper, but not one of the best ever)
Pearl Jam

I don't flat out hate any of these bands/artists (well, asides from Green Day), but there are just artists that are similar to these that should get worshiped as much as these groups do.

I didn't get Pink Floyd at first, but really their lesser known albums (Well by mainstream media) like Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, Meddle, and Animals are all great albums.

I'm with Frank the Tank on Tupac. I like Tupac alright but I just do not get what puts him head over heels above all the otehr rappers. I will listen to Biggie or Jay Z over him any day.

NIRVANA

I could never figure out how a band with such a uniform sound and limited range could cause the biggest musical phenomenon of the last 20 years...and the biggest phenom since The Beatles. : ?

Also...AC/DC -- Yes, they rock, but, let's face it, they're all too one-dimensional to be of much more significance. Their Bon Scott output is really all you need.

Lastly, the slew of bombastic female singers (Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, etc.) -- to me it's not so much singing as it is...vocal wanking. : ?

Indie rock. All of it.

While there is some "indie" rock I do enjoy - I am with you that most of it is pure boring shite. We're talking Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Bird, Of Montreal, Panda Bear, Blonde Redhead, Tapes n Tapes, Spoon etc. etc. etc.

A lot of the "pitchfork darlings"

I do like ..and you will know us by the trail of dead, arcade fire, modest mouse and some others, but not much.

Indie rock for me too. Not all of it, but a fair amount. Not bad bands, just bands I can't understand the love they receive, namely the Arcade Fire, the Decemberists, Of Montreal, a few others. Especially the Decemberists, maybe just because my roommate loves them and plays the shit all the goddamn time, but that whiny voice sounds to me like it was meant to annoy. I dunno.

Radiohead too. Damn good band, sure, but holy fuck do people ever worship this band like they're gods on earth. It's nuts. I just can't understand it.

There's some others.

I do like Andrew Bird though.

Nirvana - was it just because they were really angsty, because everyone says his songwriting is brilliant, but i dont see it anywhere.

AC/DC - they play the same fucking chords in every song, and 90% of their stuff sounds like its all just one big song. plus, Angus' solos are mostly just him flying through scales, thats not impressive, i can do that too.

Pink Floyd - Apparently they are really deep, i just found it to be stoner music.

The Beatles - maybe this is just me hating how they always get more love than The Stones in the grand scheme of rock n roll, but seriously, so much of their music is bubblegum pop, what is great about that?

The Pussycat Dolls.

Well I get the idea, that being singing prostitutes, but I have trouble understanding why people would find the music appealing.

With Tool, I don't quite get the actual music. With the last two, I don't get the popularity at all.

Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand, White Stripes, Kaiser Chiefs, The Strokes. Shit just bores me. At least the other "Pitchfork" bands like Spoon have great grooves, actual talent (Sufjan), or a shitload of acid and Beach Boys albums (AC).

The Beatles - maybe this is just me hating how they always get more love than The Stones in the grand scheme of rock n roll, but seriously, so much of their music is bubblegum pop, what is great about that?

Because of the music that isn't bubblegum pop?

Nirvana - my friend had a theory that it was just because Kurt was good looking and interestingly photogenic. I personally like their stuff, nevermind the "cult of Kurt" BS that's been built up around him since his death.

AC/DC - not gonna defend them, I pretty much agree. They have about 2 dozen damn good singles, but they've admittedly been coasting on those for decades.

Pink Floyd is stoner music, no doubt, but to me they're the Cadillac of stoner music. At least their stuff was well thought out. The fact that it goes good with the bong is a nice by-product.

Beatles - Jon Lyrik pretty much covered that one. They were fairly brilliant writers too.

Pink Floyd is stoner music

All music is stoner music. All these musical acts I know that I love... "really fucking high on drugs". The bands who probably don't smoke pot? Fall Out Boy, Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, the Pussycat Dolls... you see the trend there.

Virtually ALL Top 40 music pre-1965 could theorically be considered 'bubblegum,' and nearly all albums were essentially 1 or 2 singles surrounded by filler/cover songs. It was pretty much The Beatles who first started steering away from that.

I agree with everything you said, the Beatles along with Bob Dylan both made people realize they could start having their own "voices" in music. If you traced the influence to the bands since those two broke out 99% would probably go back to those 2

I don't 'get' Bob Dylan... he hurts my brain!

i can't stand and don't understand the appeal of Nickelback, Creed, Maroon 5 or Meatloaf. I just don't get it.

Anything with a 'big band' or 'jazz' sound annoys the shit out of me.. if i hear a song with a horn section i am immediately enraged... it confuses and infuriates me. I don't get it.

True. Also you rarely find drugs in another man's asshole, a place all the members of Fall Out Boy routinely find themselves.

Zappa fired drug users in his band. Then again, his creativity was left-field enough that he didn't really need them. Sort of the Dali of rock.

Virtually ALL Top 40 music pre-1965 could theorically be considered 'bubblegum,' and nearly all albums were essentially 1 or 2 singles surrounded by filler/cover songs. It was pretty much The Beatles who first started steering away from that.

And oddly enough, so did Frank Sinatra, though he doesn't get as much credit with it as he should.

Jon Lyrik

Nirvana - my friend had a theory that it was just because Kurt was good looking and interestingly photogenic. I personally like their stuff, nevermind the "cult of Kurt" BS that's been built up around him since his death.

Beatles - Jon Lyrik pretty much covered that one. They were fairly brilliant writers too.

I think what draws people to Nirvana is that they didn't lose their edge after becoming famous and that as much as their songs rock out they seem to be performed with a huge amount of personal anguish...let alone after Kurt's death. Listen to his vocals on Nevermind: his never sang pretty, but goddamn if he wasn't singing with his heart on his sleeve. You don't get that passion in any mainstream rock these days, or most indie which is too busy being coy.

And yes, the Beatles are great because they were the first really honest band in rock (listen to a song like In My Life or Girl compared to everything else in 1965). Aside from Dylan, they made some of the first incredibly personal rock-and-roll, but unlike Dylan (and this is where his influence in this field for them ends), they made it very sparse and forward. Even after being cleaned up a bit by the label they had paid their dues in the clubs of northern Europe, had been playing for years and had a huge swath of influences, so they really rocked and grew rapidly as writers. Plus they were unbelievably talented in creating melodies, and played their instruments with amazing taste. McCartney is still a genius today with melody, despite all the pansy shit he's made that he has been made fun of for, he still cranks out earworms like a machine.
