I think everyone has a certain love for the instrument I know I love, the guitar. As equally as I love playing the guitar, I love to hear it be played by a skilled musician. Here are a few incredible and underrated guitar players that perhaps some of you have never heard. Hopefully this thread will show us all a little something we don't know.

Jake Cinninger of Umphrey's McGee
John Scofield (Solo, Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood)
Greg Howe
Eddie Robertson (The New Mastersounds)
Eric Krasno (Lettuce, Soulive)
Derek Trucks (Derek Trucks Band, Allman Brothers Band)
Warren Haynes (Gov't Mule, Allman Brothers Band)
Jimmy Herring (Widespread Panic)
Wes Montgomery
Chet Atkins
Alex Lifeson (Rush)

Also, Prince is an incredible fucking guitar player.

Lifeson? Hammett? Prince? Seriously? I think everyone's familiar with these guys.

You want massively ignored axers who shouldn't be? Start with Sonny Sharrock.

No one even mentioned Hammett. I don't think the point of this thread was to show your underground credibility. I think all of the guys he mentioned are fairly unknown to the general public, although I do know who most of them are. As for Lifeson, I think when people think of talented musicians in Rush they always think of Neil Peart (sp?) and I wouldn't have even been able to say Lifeson's name off the top of my head.

For me, one of my favorite guitarists is Nels Cline of Wilco. Although I didn't really like the studio album he released with the band (granted I did only listen to it once), hearing him play live was unreal. He really added an unbelievable amount to the experience and single-handedly brought a lot of their songs to a whole new level. He doesn't always use the most complicated fretplay but he uses pedals and sound effects beautifully. He also looks like a badass when he plays.

Mike Turner's a pretty damn good guitarist. And I know everyone knows him, but I really like Tom Morello too.

This is a fantastic call here. Nels is the man. His solos are short and sweet (studio versions, anyway, hearing him play live, like you said, is amazing) but oh so beautiful and jazztastic. His solo on "Either Way'' is fucking perfect in its subtle beauty.
