What does everybody think of them. They are definitely one of my favorite rock bands ever and while they have done many so so albums like the last 25 years they're late 60s and early 70s music is still the best rock music to me. I love their early blues stuff and nobody including the Beatles have had a better album run than Beggers Banquet to Exile On Main Street. I've never really understood why that seem to get dumped just becuase they continued on way past their prime. They could make a hundred bad records that doesn't really change the awesomeness of Let It Bleed or Sitcky Fingers.

Agreed--their "Singles Collection" 3-disc encompassing all the early stuff is gold. They have at least a dozen essential rock songs in their catalog ("The Last Time", "Under My Thumb", "Satisfaction", "Not Fade Away", "Play W/ Fire" among them, etc. etc.). Definitely as seminal if not more important in influencing what was to come in rock than even the Beatles. Even their post-Exile stuff needs to be re-evaluated; Goats Head Soup has some pretty good stuff ("Heartbreaker" kicks serious ass). Also, I think only The Who comes close to a better run of subsequent albums (Tommy - Quadrophenia, and perhaps Zeppelin & Sabbath).
I saw them in concert around 1997, and they put on an amazing live show, even at that point. IMO I think they get dumped on for putting out sub-par middle of the road albums that kind of tarnish their legacy. It's not like they have another Let It Bleed in them, though.

Stones are an odd band for me in the sense that I liked some of their songs, but never got into their albums. I tried Exile at first, but nothing clicked. It wasn't until Sticky Fingers that I "got it". What an aaaaaaaaaaawesome album. Damn.
Now I go back and dig their other records like Exile.

The Stones have some of the best singles of any band.

The Stones are the heart and soul of rock n' roll and should always be remembered as the true, straight-up, in-your-face never caring about nothing rock band.

One classic song after another plus admirable loyalty to themselves and their fans to stay together after all this time makes them arguably the Greatest Ever...:D

Their '63-'72 output was impeccable. But they'd likely enjoy an even better reputation today had they broken up, say, around '75.
But as far as British invasion bands go, I still prefer The Beatles and The Kinks.
