View Full Version : Movies forever linked to real life tragedies

Not to bring everyone down, but I was just thinking of how some movies become even more sad/depressing when you think about the real life tragedies that they are always associated with.

Here's a few I think of, feel free to add your own:

All Dogs go to Heaven

Tragedy: Judith Barsi (the voice of Ann Marie) was murdered by her father (as was her mother) by gunshot in a double murder/suicide before the movie was released.

Insult to injury: Movie wasn't even dedicated to her.

Poltergeist

Tragedy: Final role of Dominique Dunne (the oldest daughter), who was strangled to death by her ex-boyfriend later that year.

The Secret of Nimh

Tragedy: Final role of Elizabeth Hartmen (voice of Mrs. Brisby), a actress forever haunted by personal demons. Committed suicide by jumping out a high window, strangely echoing a scene from Nimh where Mrs. Brisby jumps from a birdcage.

Insult to Injury: New DVD commentary mentions her name only once, and not even her full name.

The Core

Tragedy: A case of very bad timing. Released just weeks after the Columbia shuttle disaster, the movie features a daring crash landing by a space shuttle crew.

Nice touch: DVD commentary gives a nice tribute to the Columbia crew.

Twilight Zone: The Movie
Vic Morrow and 2 children were killed while filming after a helicopter went out of control and crashed into them.

Galaxina
Dorothy Stratten was murdered by her estranged husband (who then killed himself) around the time of the films release.

Game Of Death
Bruce Lee died before he could finish the film.

The first thing that comes to mind that hasn't been mentioned is the 2002 Ahnuld thriller Collateral Damage, which of course was postponed for a few months following 9/11 due to its theme of terrorism.

The Crow is one of the biggest ones, IMO.

Spider-Man; Had to be changed because the twin towers was originally the ending. It had to be changed. So I heard. Rumor mill anyone?

It was a teaser which featured a bank heist ending up at the towers. The teaser was pulled and other marketing material took its place. The film itself wasn't changed.

You can easily find it on YouTube though.

Phone Booth - delayed because of the real life sniper shootings

And if we were to include tv 24 actually has a couple of them:

The series premiere pilot was actually delayed by a couple of weeks due to 9/11 and they actually edited part of the pilot so that the plane blowing up at the end occurs mostly off screen.

And in the last remaining episodes of season two, the plot was about trying to stop a war with the middle east. It's funny because that was right around the time the war in Iraq began.

You're thinking of Men in Black II.

I think he is right about Spider-Man, also.

Oldboy - the pictures taken by the Virginia Tech massacre shooter

Rebel Without a Cause - The stars - James Dean, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo - all died young.

Once Upon a Time in the West - Al Mulock, one of the thugs in the opening scene, committed suicide during shooting.

V (the miniseries) - same reason as Poltergeist in the first post

Wasn't that only in the teaser trailer?

What about WAITRESS?

"Waitress" is a pretty sad one. Just read about that the other day. She starred and directed the movie, then was murdered by some construction guy. Others that came to mind were The Dark Knight, The Crow, Poltergeist.

Poltergeist

Tragedy: Final role of Dominique Dunne (the oldest daughter), who was strangled to death by her ex-boyfriend later that year.

Also the girl that played Carol Ann died during the filming of Poltergeist III.

Spiderman with the towers
The Dark Knight
The Crow

all have sad stories.

Spiderman with the towers
The Dark Knight
The Crow

all have sad stories.

Lesson: never take roles in comic book movies.

Also, Poltergeist could take the cake on a number of deaths, enough to where many think there's a Poltergeist curse. The eldest daughter was murdered before the movie was released, 2 of the actors in the 2nd died (one from cancer, another from surgery) and the little girl died from a very rare intestinal disease

Also a stuntman died while shooting the third one. There is a True Hollywood Story episode on the Poltergeist Curse.

Waitress really is one of the saddest examples... especially because the movie itself is quite loveable and enjoyable, further intensifying the tragedy of the writer/director Adrienne Shelley's death overshadowing it.

I always think of these when thinking of 9/11 ...

Collateral Damage I think of because the film's release date was delayed due to the tragedies, and Hardball I think of because the movie did an absolutely insane number the weekend after 9/11, mainly because it was a feel good flick and people wanted to start living again.

It's one of my favourite movies, but the lobby shootout scene in The Matrix, along with the trenchcoats worn apparently at least partly inspired the Columbine high school tragedy.

They didn't "inspire" the killings, the connection between the two is nothing but the mainstream media attempting to find some blame in entertainment for the actions of those two kids.

If I recall, at the time the blame also went on Marilyn Manson, The Basketball Diaries, and even professional wrestling.
