View Full Version : Favorite Song Exceeding 7 Minutes?

OK So the average song these days is probably anywhere from 2 and a half to 5 minutes, but some songs take an extra step and make themselves longer than that. To me 7 Minutes is what classifies a song as "long". What are some of the songs that despite the length, you can listen to over and over? Here are some of mine...

Hey Jude- The Beatles

This may just be my favorite song of all time. I just love the progression of it, from just Paul and his piano to an entire orchestra. It never gets old.

You Can't Always Get What you Want- The Rolling Stones

This is kind of the same as the last one I mentioned, the progression is just great. Starts with a children's choir that has to be one of the best intros out there, then to just Mick and the Guitar. Then by the end there is a Gospel choir and an entire band. Gotta love it.

Paradise by the Dashboard Light- Meat Loaf

EPIC! Yes, EPIC! I love this song. It is just a great arrangement with all of its different parts that all seem to fit together from the beginning chords to the last "argument" at the end. Meat Loaf just has a knack for these types of songs, but this has to be my favorite.

American Pie- Don McLean

Lyrically one of the best, most confusing songs of all time. I love it. I can listen to this song all the way three times in a row if I really want to. Probably one of the best recorded songs there has been.

Any others?

"I'm So Afraid" - Fleetwood Mac

The Dance is a great live album as a whole, but this song is the standout track. The opening drum beat, followed by the guitar (I love good guitarists) instrumental, takes a good minute and a half before Mick Fleetwood starts in with the lyrics. I never get tired of listening to it.

I would say that most all of my favorite songs are at or around 7 minutes in length. I've been listening to improvisational jambands for so long now I've gotten used to every tune lasting anywhere from 8 minutes all the way to 15 or 20. No big deal, it's just something you have to get your ears accustomed to. Now when I listen to the radio the songs that come on seem like little snippets of what they really could be.

You Can't Always Get What you Want - The Rolling Stones (I'm seriously beginning to think that the Stones could be the best rock band ever - provided you ignore their shit for the past few decades)
The Court of the Crimson King - King Crimson - cool I seem to be the first one to name this song, classic progressive rock
