From IMDB:

Jurassic Park star Jeff Goldblum literally ate dirt for his latest film role.

The movie star plays a Holocaust survivor who battles insanity in Adam Resurrected, and in one scene, director Paul Shrader insisted he swallow mouthfuls of mud.

Goldblum explains, "When we shot that scene towards the end of the movie in the graveyard, Paul said, 'You've done some extravagant things, so this calls for something simple.' It was the moment I was supposed to lose my mind and we fashioned the scene where I'm eating this flour.

"We did a take, and I'm crying, and snot is coming out of my nose and he said, 'That's great, but in this next bit get a handful of dirt from the mound of the grave and put it in your mouth and eat it.' I said, 'Oh that's good, that's crazy. Do we have anything edible like dirt?'

"He said, 'No, just eat the dirt.' Then he got a moundful of dirt in his hand and he ate it. I said, 'Paul, okay I'll do it!' I think we both had something of a deep experience."

JJ: Talk about suffering for the sake of your craft...:D

Incidentally, the film for which Goldblum had to eat from our good earth, Adam Resurrected, is quite good. Also incidentally, the dirt he ate is from the cemetery in Haifa, which is the city in Israel in which I live. So, atta boy Jeff!

I've been wanting to see this performance for a while. Goldblum is always one of my favorites, quite underrated.

Awful movie, saw it back in September. Goldblum is hardly deserving of mention for his performance, the movie is all over the place which just ends up causing frustration and the imagery is pretty much shoved in everyone's face. I just couldn't take that movie seriously when Goldblum and another character are barking and acting like dogs while fucking each other. I'm saddened that Goldblum would eat dirt for such a shitty film.

To each his own, someguy, but I didn't think it was that bad... weird as fuck, definitely, but the film has a lot more in common with European/Israeli cinema than it does with American cinema. I also happened to think it was one of Goldblum's greatest performances, but again, to each his own. Anyway... how about that dirt!

Jeff Goldblum is one of my favorite actors.

Smart, funny, and can play serious roles.
