The president is a celebrity. People know him worldwide, so this counts.

I'll go ahead and say it before someone else does, that way its out of the way:
Shame it didnt hit him.

I liked his response: "It was a size 10."
Good reflexes Mr. President.

His "pal" standing beside him didn't flinch. He knew that shoe was coming. He was in on it.
JFK gets his head blown off. Bush gets shoe. Sign of the times.

"That's what happens in free societies, people draw attention to themselves"
Our work in Iraq is done. We can now leave that once forsaken place, enriched in the knowledge that we leave behind a people who can embrace their free society and throw shoes at people's heads.

This has been the best title I've seen anyone come up for this story - double points for movie-relevance.

yeah, I was gonna come here and post something about this.
Don't get me wrong, I still hate Bush the President, but you know, as much as I hate that man and his policies, now that I'm starting to realize he will soon no longer be in a position where he can ruin our country and kill innocent people, I'm starting to realize he might actually be a pretty cool guy- horrible, douche baggy type of guy that you hate, but love to hang out with cause he's so much fun I mean.
Excellent reflexes too.

Come on dude, don`t even.
I`m an American and I would never want to live anywhere else.
But there is nothing wrong with questioning your ruler or his actions.
In fact, if you think about it, that`s how America got started.:)

Keep in mind that in many Arabic countries, throwing a shoe at someone is not only a sign of disrespect but also wishing harm / bad luck upon them.

I think he's more pointing to the fact that the country is economic strained from the war and more importantly has lost the lives of many citizens - just a couple of the tasks falling out from the war. Maybe it's not work to you, but you could at least compare it to a brisk walk for all the soldiers who, you know, get up before noon.

Except that under Saddam there was little religious oppression apart from the Sunni and Shiite fighting and women and a great deal of freedom. Now, with the inrush of religious factions after Saddam's removal, women have taken great strides backward and many religions, especially non-Islamic ones had to go underground. Also, Al-Qaeda was never a major player in Iraq. In fact, Saddam for the most part, sought to keep them out of the country because he thought they were destabilizing; now, they've taken stronger hold in both Iraq and Afghanistan, the latter where Osama haas reportedly been hiding from many years.

I never knew Saddam disliked Al-Qaeda, I thought he was working with Bin Laden. But I also heard Al-Qaeda was trained by the C.I.A, I just thought it was a myth. Imagine if they were still run by the Americans, and they were instructed by the Americans to bomb the WTC. And now they're operatives working for the C.I.A to distabilize the middle east, so Americans can go in and rebuild the region how it suits them.
How about Islam, is it still thriving, or has the West harmed their religion?
Why couldn't he have been one of those shoe-bombers?!

That was some crack security work. The guards don't even show up until after the second shoe was thrown. Imagine if that guy had been an expert knife thrower and had something sharper.
And Iraq was a secular country under Saddam, by the way.

True...true.
We have done the opposite of every goal we've had in Iraq. It's more unstable now than it was before we went in, we've turned it into a breeding ground for terrorist, and we've over through a leader in the region whom bin Laden hated because he was to secular. We've also tied up our forces in Iraq doing nothing while they could have been in Afghanistan finding real terrorist and stopping real threats.
Ya, the Iraq war has harmed the region and the U.S.

Turn the clip into a .gif and post it whenever someone starts a bad thread.
Edit: Bush- "The guy wanted to get on TV and he did. I don't know what his beef is."
Haha, Bush is the epitome of not-giving-no-fuck... most of the time it's his weakness; but in this case, it's pretty funny.

Actually, I'm kind of glad this person threw the shoe. It lets me know that America's hard work at establishing 'somewhat' peace and re-organization in Iraq was worth it.
A person can now throw a shoe at the President of the United States, and only get 2 yrs in prison. If Sadam Hussein was still in power, and that person threw the shoe at him, he would have been dead on sight. And his family would have probably been killed too.

I knew the comic strip was a separate issue. I posed two separate questions. The latter was regarding the comic strip -- i'm glad i'm not the only one who didn't get it -- but you don't wish to explain, so that's fine. The first question was your agreement with Quentin regarding one of my posts, and i'm still wondering what is the point you're both making.

This isn't the political forum, so it's best not we get off topic. I probably shouldn't have said anything either to be fair. This is about Bush almost getting hit with a shoe. Regardless of what you think of the guy, it's funny.
I'm much more upset that a few of you don't get the comic. :)

I want to know what Bush said to piss him off that much. I know Bush is a douche bag but how mad do you have to be to pull off you shoes and try to kill someone. I also love how on the video those guys were telling the camera guy to turn it off. I bet that "shoe tosser" got taken out back and got merked. Tied his thumbs together and two in the head, Bush Family Style.

I remember laughing the first time I saw the clip. It was just so incredibly surreal.
I want to know what Bush said to piss him off that much. I know Bush is a douche bag but how mad do you have to be to pull off you shoes and try to kill someone.
I don't know if he was trying to kill him per se, I think the only way you could kill someone with a shoe is if they're lying on the ground and you beat them over the heat with it for like 15+ minutes. I think the worst that could have happened to Bush during the incident would be a black eye or a bloody nose which would have been incredibly symbolic and fitting when you think of it.
In regard to why a shoe was thrown, apparently shoe throwing is a sign of disrespect in Iraq as many Iraqis pelted the statute of Saddam after it was brought down. That and I'm sure the shoe was the only thing he could have gotten past security which could be thrown, that or the mic I guess.
What would Obama have done I wonder? I like to think he would have reached out and caught them without looking and pretend that nothing happened. I like to think basketball skills are easily transferable to shoe catching - plus it would have been baddass.

it is a sign of the times on iraq , that guy wouldn't have dared done something of the sort if Sadam was in power . he inadvertently strengthened the argument that Iraq is better now than it was before . if somehow he did do this to Sad , he would have been pushing up daisies right now , the iraqi people now have the freedom to protest . that doesn't mean he won't pay , because even here , something like that would be attempted assault . he won't be hung for his actions though .
