he has always come off as a real humble dude in my opinion

he had that spat where he went a bit nuts... but before and after that, he has always seemed like a real cool, humble and genuine dude!

Plus he owns as an actor!

I've never understood why so many dislike him. He seems like a good person and is always happy to crack a joke at his own expense. But I guess we never know the true reality of people who only encounter via tv and film. Ultimately we can only judge him as an actor, and imo he's damn good at his job.

judging by the fact that he has made friends with some of the best filmmakers around tells me he's dedicated to his craft and easy to be around. I think he's a cool guy in my opinion. A cool guy with an opinion now and again.

That was funny as hell.

I think he's doing a good job of reinventing himself after the couch-jumping, Matt Lauer incidents . . . not to mention the whole scientology thing. I don't care what the hell he does out of movies, but as long as he keeps making good movies, I'm good.

Yeah, I think he's acting up the laughter a bit and such, but why the hell shouldn't he? The guy is a good sport, and that's all that really matters. I'm not so sure why people want to stop his fun. He isn't fighting pit bulls or running red lights.

It's funny, cuz he's a good sport on TV with Letterman.

But then he flips out and gets pissed when some journalist or interviewer from the UK plays a joke and sprays water in his face, when he's doing an interview on the red carpet....

It's bizarre. Why couldn't he just laugh the water joke thing off, like he did these jokes on Letterman? Do guests get paid to be on Letterman or something?

I like several of Cruise's movies, and I appreciate his passion for his work.

Tom Cruise is trying to rebuild his public reputation. And I got no' problem with that as a viewer. He's cool. Cult or no cult.

But then he flips out and gets pissed when some journalist or interviewer from the UK plays a joke and sprays water in his face, when he's doing an interview on the red carpet....

Well it's pretty silly in retrospect, but what is a guy supposed to do? You're "working" to promote your film or to promote your celebrity, and then someone plays a big joke on you. If anybody here has a job where they have to interact with the public in some way, I guess it's like ...if your boss tells you to tour some client around for two hours, only at the very end to have the client pull down your pants and go "Surprise rofl jk wtfpwnage!" Because it was all a big joke. The client didn't actually need a tour. The client just wanted to play a lame gag.
But you just wasted two hours of my goddamn time, you crazy asshole. Who put you up to this? No, don't run away. Don't be a coward. Who put you up to this? I spent two hours trying to help you because that's my job. Why would you do something like this? Why- no guys let go of me, I can handle this. Let me handle this. Hey, don't run away. You're a jerk. Why would you do something like this? :p

The Postmaster General

I don't get how anyone can't get why someone would be irked by being in a tuxedo and having someone surprise you by spraying water in your face?? I'm agreeing with both Tom Cruise and miguel_montes on this one --- I would have been much, much less cool about it and probably spat on the jerk who did that to me. How the hell did Cruise end up looking like the jerk in that situation, and how is it the same as a Letterman Top 10 gag? It was mean-spirited.

It's easy for us to look at that and say, "Oh that was funny." but at the time, you don't know what's happening. Maybe it's water, or maybe it's dish water. Maybe it's a joke, or maybe the guy is being malicious. I don't get why the reporter who sprayed the water is reduce to just being a funny prankster. It was a dick move - more so than anything I've ever heard anyone crap on Cruise about.

bigred760
12-19-2008, 07:35 PM
I think Cruise handled that situation awesomely. The guy who did it didn't think it was very funny once Cruise scolded him. He thought he was going to play class clown and squirt one of the biggest movie stars in the world in the face. He came out looking like an immature little brat after Cruise got done with him. Good for Tom on that one.

Are you kidding me? You try getting squirted at and tell me how that makes you feel.

Wow, everyone totally disagreed with me, about the water-squirting guy. I don't know if Tom was an asshole for scolding the intern, or whoever it was.... But it was a fuckin' joke, no different from Letterman's jokes in my opinion.

I know people differ with that... I thought it was kinda funny. Though admittedly, I guess I shouldn't expect Tom to laugh right along with the fuckin' guy, point & wink at him and say "That was a GOOD one!" ;)

I get what ya'll are saying now... I guess I was being unjustifiably fecesious (not sure on spelling).

It's all context, Trail Blazer - Imagine you were walking into prom and some guy jumped out and sprayed water on you. That would be funny to a lot of people, but you'd be like "What the hell!?" When it was printed in the year book later, you'd probably have a good laugh about it, stepped back and with your composure back.

Cruise probably knew ahead of time about the top 10 list, and was hamming it up. Either way, he was in the mood for comedy, whereas with the squirting incident he was totally off guard.

And about the water, you gotta think to about how your initial reaction would be - I mean, you don't know what just got thrown on you except it was wet, and probably warm. I would have turned into Howard Hughes and gone into some sort of catatonic state.

To be fair, it was a small squirt of water in his face (clown flower stylee). Tom should have let the 'prankster' moron retreat with his tail between his legs and walked away the bigger man.

But instead he goes a little loco...and even after the fella apologises and says he never meant for the 'joke' to be taken in that way he's all "don't run away...you're a jerk...you should be ashamed of yourself" etc. like he's totally drunk on Tom Cruise power juice.

I dislike the guy because he comes across as a control freak and I think he is vastly overrated as an artist...and his whole manner is somewhat stilted and eerie and zany and contrived and impulsive all at once...and that laugh is fucking HAUNTING! He really puzzles me.

killuminati003
12-20-2008, 09:43 AM
I agree with everyone saying he was overreacting and being a baby to the water spraying incident. It was a harmless joke. Even if he was having a bad day, and it made him mad, he should have shown some class, laughed it off and walked away.

Course I'm biased with my extreme annoyance at everything this man says or does...

Yeah, but that's like a 100x funnier than the water squirt. Even if Cruise was dead serious, it's still the type of action I can support. And to be fair, usually clowns dress in costumes and makeup, and those flowers are oversized novelties.

The guy says "the joke" didn't mean to be taken that way. I still want someone to explain to me exactly how the joke was supposed to be taken. "Oh haha! You totally surprised me by spraying a warm wet substance, that at the best is water, in my face!!!" <- that doesn't ring true.

I mean, I don't get why when we talk about celebrities, they live in some sort of alternate parallel universe where things like element of surprise, and losing composure don't exist.

I'm calling bullshit on every single person who says they would have thought it was a good time if out of nowhere some stranger sprays water on their face. It doesn't even make sense, so I don't know why it's supposed to make sense that Tom Cruise should have reacted that way.

You know, when my friends get drunk and pass out, the girls usually initiate drawing on them. I've seen friends wake up while people are standing around them in the process of pulling a prank and get totally bent out of shape, and I've seen those same friends look at pictures a week later and have a laugh.

Tom Cruise's REACTION to a douche bag prank was a lot more understanding than a premeditated douche bag prank.

I think that the guy who sprayed Cruise was a total asshole, and he's lucky he hadn't done that to someone like Sean Penn.

Someone like Cruise spends loads of money on his suits, and I doubt highly that they're bought off the rack, spraying him with ANYTHING in a situation where realistically - Cruise doesn't have to promote ANYTHING, is uncalled for.

I'd make sure that dude's dentist got some business for that kind of bullshit.

Celebrities acting like regular people is a huge no no. As I understand it, we want them to be fun and casual, just professionally so. You can be really excited about this new girl you're dating, but keep it under wraps. Don't burst into 15 minute laughter and then jump around furniture like a fabric frolicking unicorn. "Crazy" is just my way of joking about that. And I hope others share a similar opinion here. Because ... even aside from his Katie Holmes mishap, his arguments regarding opinions of psychiatry and drugs were neither odd nor misinformed in and of themselves. They're just strange to see when you're watching Entertainment Tonight or Jay Leno.
Celebs always have to be sure to keep their guard up somewhat in these public discussions and interviews and promotions.

...and in reality I know everyone calls Cruise crazy because of scientology, but I'm numbed to all the stories people decide to believe in. So I look past it. Because I'm... you know, I'm different. I know that. When somebody like me passes an accident on the side of the road, I know that I can't act like everyone else. I know that only I have the ability to help. So I have to help. I would love to go on vacation and forget the world. I would love that. But I can't.
I can't.

I think you are right. However, if I was walking into a business function wearing my $150 suit, and some guy sprayed water on me, I would be pretty pissed too. I know it wont harm it in the long run, but now I get to walk around the rest of the evening with parts of my suit wet. Not only is his suit significantly more expensive than my $150 one, but he also has to spend the rest of the evening hob-nobing with reporters and visiting with people... with parts of his suit wet. I don't know, I would be pissed. I think you would need to have the patience of the Dalai Lama to be able to handle that.

I know what you're saying... I'd be pretty fucking agitatated, as he so rightfully was. The thing is, he kept going.... And going.... Even after the apology.

I don't agree with religion in any form, and I think Cruise has come off as arrogant, and an extremist too.

I guess the bottom line is: We're all human, celebrity or not. I'm not faulting him for reacting the way he did.... I just think he gave that man more of his time then he should've, and his reaction thus made it that much more of a bigger deal.

Yeah, I think at the worst he lost his composure. At the same time, I think his reaction made the whole thing better. The joke was pretty stupid, IMO. It's kind of funny that it got called out as such, but I could imagine a lot of other actors handling in a more "cool" manner.

First of all, it's hard to deny that Tom Cruise is an EXTREMELY talented actor. Don't believe me? Go watch Born on the Fourth of July, A Few Good Men, Interview with the Vampire, and Magnolia, and then come back and we'll talk.

Also, I always remembered Cruise to be a humble and nice actor to his fans and everyone - arriving early to premieres to sign autographs for hours, chatting with fans, etc. So sure, he went nutty at one point on Oprah and that whole Scientology thing really is pretty nutty in general, but overall, I don't hold it against the guy.

I hated him in Tropic Thunder, but for once it wasn't Cruise's fault I hated him. It was the writers. The movie was funny but that character- it's like they wrote it in just so they could have Cruise in the film doing something nobody would expect him to do. The character was just begging for laughs- obvious, pointless and obviously pointless. Every joke that character had has been done better before.

And I thought that before I even recognized it was Cruise.

Although I kinda get what you're saying, how is Cruise doing something nobody would expect him to do, a bad thing? If some actor always plays the same character, he gets crucified; if one actor tries to do something different, he gets crucified. Make up your mind, movie fans!

And I disagree about your take about his character in Tropic Thunder. You say that character was made for laughs. Of course it is, all of the characters in that movie are made for laughs. It's a comedy!! It might be obvious, but it isn't pointless. It has a point: to make people laugh. If it works, and the general consensus is that it did work, so it isn't pointless.

killuminati003

No other characters were created to further the movie, which was made for laughs. Cruise's character seems like it was created independent of the film just to pull a few cheap laughs out of people.

And I'm not saying there is something wrong with playing different roles- I'm just saying that creating a role just so it can be played by an actor that nobody thought would ever act like that seems a little...desperate, to me.

These are just my opinions. It's just how the character came off to me, I'm not saying they are universal truths about the film or anything. I understand that a lot of people view the character differently.

While the love for his performance in Tropic Thunder is a bit much (still very entertaining though), he'll always be the man. Just because he's nuts doesn't change the fact he's one of the best actors of his generation. It's a shame that so many forget that.

O come on, everyone's a little crazy. Tom Cruise is the man. He's not the best actor out there, but he's a good one and he's in a lot of great movies and has worked with the most impressive list of filmmakers, moreso than any other actor out there.
