Majel Roddenberry, 'First Lady of Star Trek,' dies

NEW YORK – Majel Barrett Roddenberry, the widow of "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry, has died. She was 76. Roddenberry, an actress who appeared in numerous "Star Trek" TV shows and movies, died Thursday of leukemia at her home in Bel-Air, Calif., her representative said.

At Roddenberry's side were family friends and her only son, Eugene Roddenberry Jr. Gene Roddenberry died in 1991.

Her romance with Roddenberry earned her the title "The First Lady of Star Trek." A fixture in the "Star Trek" franchise, her roles included Nurse Christine Chapel in the original "Star Trek," Lwaxana Troi in "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and the voice of the USS Enterprise computer in almost every spin-off of the 1966 cult series. She recently reprised the voice role in the upcoming "Star Trek" film directed by J.J. Abrams.

Troi's mother has got to be the single most annoying character in all of Trekdom. Words cannot express how much I hated her!

Still, that was the character. Certainly not the actress. This is very sad news. :(

This is absolutely heartbreaking since "Star Trek: TNG" is all I watched when I was younger and I still do till this day. Sadly missed! :(

Actually Trek's most annoying character was Neelix from Voyager. Troi's mum at least had an occasional moment of sympathy, or at least non-annoyance.

Having said that, RIP Majel!:(

I'm starting to get a bit gun-shy when I click on this section, it seems like every time I click on here there's bad news waiting. I have to admit, outside of her work in the Trek universe, I didn't really get a chance to see her in anything else. I may be in the minority but I enjoyed her work in all the Trek's. She will be missed.
