Dane Cook - Stealing Runs in the Family

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

WOBURN, Mass. – The half brother of comedian Dane Cook was in a Massachusetts court after he was accused of embezzling millions from the entertainer.

Darryl McCauley is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at Woburn District Court.

Prosecutors allege the 43-year-old McCauley stole millions from Cook while working as Cook's manager as part of the comedian's company, Great Dane Enterprises Inc.

They say McCauley transferred funds from Cook's business accounts to his personal accounts between July 2007 and December 2008. In one instance, investigators alleged that McCauley forged a $3 million check from Cook's account to himself.

The 36-year-old Cook's comedy album "Retaliation" went double platinum, and he has appeared in several films, including "My Best Friend's Girl" with Kate Hudson.

Today, I stopped to realize that Dane Cook has earned millions of dollars, and the universal question came to my mind: What is wrong with the world today?

Well at least now a member of his family has some publicity that makes sense.

They should have waited to see if he was going to distribute the funds to all the comedians who his brother stole from.

This thread would make more sense if Cook himself actually stole something from someone, which he never did.

Many people find material used by Cook to be too similar to that of comedians before him. In their opinion, this is stealing. They didn't mean like he stole a bicycle or something, but I can see how the choice of words would be confusing for you.

Too similar my ass. Dane Cook is a thief and those who deny this fact are in denial because they have a total mancrush on him.

Why didn't this happen to Mencia?!

Because Carlos Mencia doesn't have 3 million dollars.

I thought food stamps were all the same...

Ah well, his brother, err, half-brother is a piece of shit for doing what he did. I used to like Dane Cook, then in one fell swoop while visiting my friend at college, I realized I don't like Dane Cook. EVERY GIRL has a poster of him somewhere in their room and said girl and her friends all have to have a conversation by quoting him CONSTANTLY. Otherwise, the conversation doesn't go very far. Dane Cook also became unfunny when I really listened to everything he talks about and has explain every little fucking thing in some extravagant way with arm flailing and the screaming.

Of all the material Dane Cook has performed in - what, fifteen years or so? - the only material anyone has pointed out as "stolen" were a handful of jokes that anyone could have come up with.

Seriously, even I came up with an "itchy asshole" joke once.

I still think he's funny, so go blow me.

It was more than just Louis C.K., he's stolen from others as well like Demetri Martin, Joe Rogan, and Jim Breuer to name a few. Oh, and you know that "itchy asshole" bit that you don't think Dane Cook stole? Go find a clip of Louis performing it for the first time, because guess what? Cook is in the fucking audience.

EDIT: Hahahaha some douchebag removed the "Plagiarism Controversy" portion of Dane Cook's Wikipedia page. Go figure...

I still think he's funny, so go blow me.

I'd rather not. And as far as what's funny, I've laughed at and told jokes about child molestation, but that doesn't mean that I think its cool to tell jokes about it or that I approve of it though, so....

How do I upload pics saved to my computer, by the way?

This is going to turn into one of "those" conversations. Like, where the athiest says that god doesn't exist, the religious guy asks him to prove it, then the athiest counters that the religious guy should first prove he does first, and then it's like an abbot and costello routine rewritten by Fred Phelps. :D

Haha. Now that one's just funny, because I saw that same joke played out in visual form on the television show Millenium, in the episode entitled "Monster" in which the main character Frank Blank is asking for a pair shoes in a size 10, and they bring him a size 9. GASP! DEMITRI MARTIN IS A JOKE THIEF~!@~1`1`1`1`2121!!1!!!!

Pul-lease. Both jokes are based on observational humor that any fuckin prick with a Mic could of come up with at some point- Even a prick with a pen and a paper writing for a television show that aired in 1997.

And the only joke by Louis C.K. that's even remotely close to possibly being stolen is the Itchy Asshole one. Even then, that's just observational humor that any one could have come up with. I don't believe Louis C.K. holds a copywrite on the concept of itchy assholes. The rest are completely different punch lines and deliveries with vaguely similar set ups.

I see no thievery here.

EDIT: And if I come off as angry here, I apologise. It's because I've experienced years of this "Dane Cook stole!" bullcrap being thrown at me as a cook fan and it's startin' to annoy me.

No one has yet to prove that Cook stole anything, just that he has a few vaguely similar jokes that anyone could have come up with at any time. In fact I'm sure the people he "stole" from weren't the first who came up with those ideas.

Why must I prove that he didn't do something, when you can't prove that he did? I'm not very keen on this "guilty until proven innocent" concept you're pushin'.

No I don't, because those are super-broad topics that we have all encountered. Like I said, did I steal the itchy asshole joke I never heard before, even though it ended up sounding pretty much the same?

When you are a professional comedian, you have to come up with tons and tons of material to find anything good, and what works best are things that we all encounter, like itchy assholes and idiot shoe store employees.

Similar jokes are just bound to happen. Dane Cook just happen to get famous, but I'm sure this is pretty common among the business.

Did anyone sue the screenwriters of The Fast and the Furious for "stealing" the plot of Point Break? No, because when you write a bunch of action movies about undercover cops, things are bound to end up feeling familiar.

I once had a plot idea that ended up being exactly the same as the plot to Mission Impossible without realizing it. You absorb what you see and it influences what you write.

Stealing is wrong...but Dane Cook is kind of a hack. He had one funny comedy central special. He is right up there with Carlos Mencia as the most annoyingly unfunny comedian, big today.

I am not an uber-fan of Dane Cook, but the guy has made me laugh a few times, and perhaps I should take the moment to provide a marginal level of defense for him. The material Dane is said to have "stolen" is very similar, yeah, but then many comedians have similar material that wouldn't constitute stealing. Sometime comedians just happen to have similar observations, and I've watched the large wealth of youtube videos alleging Dane stole from other comics, and they all seem to be in the same vein of what I am referring to. And this isn't an act of being blinded by some great love of Dane; one of the comics who has been most vocal in claiming Dane stole from him is Louis CK, who is easily one of the three best stand-up comics working today, and I still feel it isn't quite enough to accuse him of out-and-out "thievery".

On the other hand, Carlos Mencia is a filthy motherfucking shithead joke thief. I came to this discovery when turning to his show one night and he was doing a sketch that was 100% lifted from a classic bit from the legendary Sam Kinison, and I have hated him to this day.

Sgizzy316

Carlos Mencia blows. Even if Dane stole a concept of someone else, he interpreted it and delivered it better than anyone has before. keep hating but he is one of the best stand up comics out there. his acting blows though

People laugh at Dane Cook the same as they would a friend who exaggerates things and acts funny about it. You could be at a party, wishing this one particular guy would shutup for a while and quit thinking he's the funniest man alive, yet there are his friends egging him on like he's some comedic genius. Girls laugh more because they think he's hot. One listen to his cd's and you know it's about image when those twinkies are screaming at things he is saying whether it's the punchline or whether it's completely irrelevent words. You would think Timberlake or Ne-Yo are standing there talking to them. You take away the way he looks, and I guarantee we wouldn't be talking about him today.

Ultimately, it's not about what he is presenting, so much as it is about how he is presenting himself. There's nothing more to his material than everyday experiences, and it's done so in such a non-threatening manner that anybody can GET his jokes if they want to.

Not me though, as I can't find him to be anything more than a glorified frat boy. He's not satirical, he's not insightful, he's not outlandish, he's not witty, and he's just not appealing to me in the slightest.

But remaining on topic, I think it's terrible that anyone could do that to someone else. Nevermind the fact that there's a family connection between them.
