Pat Hingle, a veteran actor whose career included a recurring role as Commissioner Gordon in several Batman movies in the 1990s, has died. He was 84.

Family friend Michele Seidman says Hingle died at his home in Carolina Beach shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday.

Seidman says he decided to settle in the coastal town after shooting the movie "Maximum Overdrive" in the area in 1986. He lived there for more than 15 years.

She said Hingle had battled multiple health problems over the last several years.

His career in movies and television spanned six decades, and he was also nominated for a Tony Award in 1958. Hingle's last movie was "Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby," which was released in 2006.

Another of the many "OH HIM" actors of my childhood. Never knew his name but always seen him around in flicks.

The fucked up thing is that I just watched Talladega Nights for the first time a couple days ago and saw him in it and thought to myself, "Wow, he's still alive? I thought he was a dead." :(

Though his Commisioner Gordon sucked ass, R.I.P.

Very sad. I actually got to meet him about six months ago when SAG gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award. It was a nice ceremony, though he seemed quite ill. Got to spend about 30 seconds with him personally, where I told him I loved Maximum Overdrive and that his evil Bobo Justus was the best thing about the Grifters, to which he said thanks. A true giant of character acting...

RIP :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

Great character actor! Loved him in Splendor In The Grass, The Gauntlet and the first slew of Batman movies!

I thought he died years ago.

He may be better known as Commissioner Gordon, but I'll remember him more from his work with Clint Eastwood, especially in Hand 'Em High and Sudden Impact.

So many roles, a wonderful actor.
Just saw "Brewster's Millions" the other night.

I find it odd when someone dies couple of days before of watching a movie that he was in.

He seemed like a very humble, nice man. I remember him most for his role in Batman, but have seen him in other works and he always seemed to give 110%.

Pat was funny in the Stephen King written/directed film "Maximum Overdrive" I still laugh to myself when I think of the restroom scene with his son Bubba and the stolen keys to a...I forget now? a truck maybe? A gr8 commissioner Gordon too,saw him on an Eastwood western today flippin' thru the channels Pat was playing a Judge I think? Just now read he had passed away. :(
