Kidman Ran Away From Australia Criticism
9 January 2009 11:01 AM, PST
Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman knew her performance in Baz Luhrmann epic Australia would be savaged by critics, because she isn't proud of the work herself.
The star appears opposite Hugh Jackman as British aristocrat Lady Sarah Ashley in the movie, but Kidman admits she feels no pride for her work - because she "couldn't connect emotionally" to her character.
And she was so appalled by her own acting when she saw the film in full at its November premiere in Sydney, she and husband Keith Urban took the first plane out of the country so she didn't have to face the criticism.
Speaking recently on Sydney radio station 2day FM, she said, "I can't look at this movie and be proud of what I've done.
"I sat there (at the premiere) and I looked at Keith and went 'Am I any good in this movie?' But I thought Brandon Walters (an 11-year-old Aboriginal boy) and Hugh Jackman were wonderful. It's just impossible for me to connect to it emotionally at all.
"We ran because I didn't want to read anything. I didn't want to know."

It's always funny how they say this AFTER it gets panned.

I wasn't even aware it was getting bad reviews...
But damn that's a brutally honest opinion from an actor about there own performance no less.

This article is total false, inaccurate and Nicole's quotes were taken out of context. She said she loved the film but just that she didn't like her performance, which made her really uncomfortable.
Here's an article that talks the truth about it:
L.A. Dispatch: The Perils of Candor
By Michael Cieply
Nicole Kidman in “Australia.” (20th Century Fox)Even smart guys like Larry Mark and Bill Condon, who are producing this year’s Oscar ceremony, are going to have one heck of a time solving the show’s core problem: Movie stars, in any public forum, are increasingly terrified of being as interesting as at least some of them really are. Candor kills. Even an old bull like Clint Eastwood knows it. He could probably tell you more about the rough and tumble of Hollywood than anyone in the business. But put him in front of the camera on Oscar night, and he suddenly turns dull.
To understand why even the brightest stars have learned, in the Web-crazed world, to hit the dimmer, you need only take a look at what happened to Nicole Kidman in the last few weeks. Actually, go to Google, and enter the search terms Nicole and Kidman and Squirm. You’ll get more than 28,000 hits, many of them telling how Ms. Kidman “squirmed” when she saw her own performance in “Australia,” wasn’t proud of her work and fled Australia after seeing the movie. One great example of the species is here:
I’m not out to defend (or criticize) Ms. Kidman’s performance: I haven’t even seen “Australia,” as much as I’d like to get a look at all the season’s movies. But it’s hard not to be shocked at how her comments have been wrenched out of context when you listen to her original interview, with a couple of down-under radio hosts.
As it turns out, the hosts, Kyle and Jackie, were gushing about the glories of the movie. Ms. Kidman, meanwhile, was making some interesting points about the way actors experience their own work. Only twice, she said, had she ever watched her own work in public — “Australia” and “Moulin Rouge” — both times out of respect for the director, Baz Luhrmann. Sure, she said, looking at herself up on the screen made her squirm. But, she added, “I was amazed, actually,” at the movie. No, she wasn’t proud, because, when it comes to her own work, said Ms. Kidman, “I have no objectivity at all.” She went on to quote Stanley Kubrick, who once explained that the only time an actor can experience a role with untainted emotion is on first reading the script.
It was fairly sophisticated stuff. But she got burned badly, as Web sites and news outlets around the world plucked a few spicy comments. No need to weep for the stars, of course. But don’t be surprised when they clam up tight on Oscar night. For most, it’s much better to be safe than sorry.
Also here's the actual radio interview with Nicole (which has the out-of-context quotes):

For fuck's sake all this negativity for Nicole and Australia needs to fucking stop. The media are so desperate to find something to negative about her or the film that they have go do shit like this and, worst of all, people are going to believe it. Fuckin' arseholes.

I thought she was personally, for the most part, wonderful in the movie.
Maybe she overacts a little in the begining, but a lot of people do and it does take a while for the movie to get going but once it does I found it to be an enthralling epic.

Not just pretty girls but I think actors in general.
I've heard a lot of actors say that they can't stand looking at themselves in movies.

The title of this is really funny. I think the second article brings up a good point about how these kinds of things get misreported and exaggerated, and how celebs might start doing right by just not giving us anything at all. They don't have anything to do with these reporters except share their thoughts and feelings then in turn they get made into jackasses to amuse the cheap. I think Kidman is more secure than it all makes her sound.

Aside from that totally out-of-place first 20 minutes, Australia wasn't bad at all. It was just a little overindulgent, if anything.

Like others have said, she's not the first to say they hate watching themselves in movies and are very over-critical of themselves. I was watching In Bruges the other night on Cinemax and directly after the movie they had one of those "10 minutes with" pieces they do when they are promoting a movie and it was Mickey Rouke and Darren Aronofsky setting down together promoting The Wrestler. Darren was talking about Mickeys performance and how hard a few scenes were to shot, some of which got cut. He went insofar as to say Mickey doesn't watch ANY of his own movies and he laughed saying that if Mickey somehow caught some pieces of it on cable years down the line that he'd be upset that a few of those hard-as-nails to film scenes weren't there. So, Nicole deserves a break on being hard on herself when it comes to her performances.

I agree..is there an honest statement from any actor out there in film history in which they PANNED their own performance even though critics and fans loved it and the movie was a success? THAT is an actor the world should bow before and worship their greatness as the coolest of the cool.
