'The Prisoner' Star Patrick McGoohan Dies
British actor also co-created the classic sci-fi series

January 15 2009

Patrick McGoohan, an Emmy Award-winning actor who starred as a British spy in the 1960s TV series "Secret Agent" and "The Prisoner" and was known for playing various villainous roles in films and on television, has died. He was 80.

McGoohan died peacefully Tuesday (Jan. 14) in St. John's Health Center in Santa Monica after a short illness, said Cleve Landsberg, McGoohan's son-in-law. The family did not provide further details.

It was the height of James Bond mania in 1965 when McGoohan showed up on American TV screens in "Secret Agent," a British-produced series in which he played John Drake, a special security agent working as a spy for the British government. The hour-long series, which ran on CBS until 1966, was an expanded version of "Danger Man," a short-lived, half-hour series on CBS in 1961 in which McGoohan played the same character.

But it was McGoohan's next British-produced series, "The Prisoner," on CBS in 1968 and 1969, that became a cult classic.

Once described as an "espionage tale as crafted by Kafka," "The Prisoner" starred McGoohan as a British agent who, after resigning his post, is abducted and held captive by unknown powers in a mysterious village, where he known only as No. 6.

McGoohan created and executive-produced the series, which ran for only 17 episodes. He also wrote and directed several episodes. A remake of the series, which had McGoohan's blessing, will air later this year on AMC.

Among the memorable villains he played on screen was England's sadistic King Edward I in Mel Gibson's 1995 film "Braveheart."

As a guest star on TV's "Columbo," McGoohan won Emmys in 1975 and 1990.

"The Prisoner" intro.

"Who is Number One?"
"You are... Number Six!"
"I am not a number! I am a free man!"

Holy shit, this fuckin' blows. I literally just started getting into The Prisoner last year. (It was an amazing show, btw, and was literally a huge influence on LOST). The real tragedy is that with the Prisoner remake coming soon this year on AMC, I would've been really excited to hear what McGoohan thought of it. Damn shame....

Wasn't he the judge in A Time to Kill?

And of course I remember him from Braveheart.

thank you! I was watching "A Time To Kill" the other day on TV and I kept on looking at the judge and thinking the same thing. I meant to go to IMDB to verify.

He was great as the warden in "Alcatraz" but "The Prisoner" was a masterpiece. I'm not one much for "remakes" but given the time frame when the original aired and how much more they could do with the story now...well...bring it on.

A giant. One of my favorite actors. I feel privileged and lucky he did so much great work on film, and especially television. He made the tube exciting and worth watching.

Danger Man and The Prisoner and the scandalously underrated The Hard Way.

Be seeing you, free man.

Wow, I didn't realize that McGoohan was the creator of and frequent writer/director of The Prisoner, as well as being one of the first actors offered the role of James Bond before Sean Connery who actually turned the role down...

This guy was fucking amazing... :(

I will best remember him in Braveheart, a criminally underrated performance by him in the movie.

I also saw him in a movie about a baby dinosaur called Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend. Don't remember much of it, but I remember him being the villain in that movie as well.

At least he didn't pass away before his time and at least he didn't die suffering. It's funny, I first saw him as the Phantom's father in the Billy Zane movie, but I always got samples of his other work to know that the guy had talent.

Patrick McGoohan was one of the most intense actors ever with a sly smile and look as if he could see right through you.
His role in Braveheart as Longshanks, King Edward I is still one of the most memorable
