this is probably really stupid of me to say this but why the hell do people think reign of fire will open so big? i think it will be lucky to reach 20 million, which i think is still even stretching it. anyway, i predict around 17-18 million tops. and i think H8 will open to around 11-12 million. but then again, im no box office expert, or even a good money guesser, so my "predictions" will probably be VERY off.

MIIB will drop around 50%. ROAD TO PERDITION is playing on only 2000 screens, so that alone should prevent it from making over $25 million. REIGN OF FIRE may surprise and slip past RTP. The new HALLOWEEN would be lucky to make more than $10 million. Here are my predictions:

1. MIIB - $26 million
2. REIGN OF FIRE (2400 screens) - $20 million
3. ROAD TO PERDITION (2000 screens) - $19 million
4. MR. DEEDS - $10 million
5. HALLOWEEN RESURRECTION (1500 screens) - $9.5 million

Wow! That is a low screen count for a Tom Hanks movie. But I still think it will make plenty of money.

Wow! That is a low screen count for a Tom Hanks movie. But I still think it will make plenty of money.

It's a typical release pattern for an adult-targeted movie. Fewer screens mean a higher per-screen average. A higher per-screen average means legs. A movie with legs gives adults, who are too busy to go to the movies, more time to check it out. I also think that the studio is nervous. It's not your typical Tom Hanks movie, which is all hype anyway (you still root for him as if he were the good guy the way you root for the Corleones). It's not your typical summer movie (translation: slow and ponderous). It's more of a fall film but it's not quite Oscar material either despite the A-list cast and crew. It's not important enough even though each scene is directed so self-importantly. The acting is not Oscar-worthy enough, although they may nominate Newman just out of respect. Its best chances are in the technical department, not a box-office propeller. What I think they're hoping for is a big enough opening and respectable word-of-mouth so they could gradually add more screens and drag it out till year-end and possible award citations leading up to the Oscars. Well, good luck!

you know, even out of the bad reviews this film got... it still said that the acting was superb and oscar worthy... ive only seen one review out of like 30 that said that it wasnt worthy besides yours. and that review was stupid because he said it was poorly cast, but gave no reasons for the claim.

They may be Oscar material now because of the slim pickings, but I expect stronger contenders to come out of the fall and Christmas films. The only performance I think with staying power is Newman's. His was the only one that somewhat moved me. Law's is flashier but his character is more of a movie character than a real one. And unless the Academy misconstrues Hanks' blandness for subtlety, then I sincerely believe he doesn't stand a chance when the competition gets tougher. That is, if it gets tougher. Otherwise, it's going to be a weak Oscar year.

THEATER COUNT FOR THIS WEEKENDS NEW MOVIES

HALLOWEEN: RESURRECTION - 1,749
THE CROCODILE HUNTER - 2,525
ROAD TO PERDITION - 1,797

If the studio would be afraid that RTP can't make any money, they would move it to autumn and add more screens so that they can make money before bad worth of mouth starts to spread. The fact that they are releasing it in a highly competitive weekend and are counting on good word of mouth instead of big opening hints that the studio has a lot of faith in the film.

Not necessarily. I think one big reason for the move was to create some space between their film and GANGS OF NEW YORK. They probably also thought of it as counterprogramming. You also have to keep in mind that the release date has been switched so many times. Not usually a sign of confidence. It was originally announced as a Nov. 2nd, 2001 release. If they had faith then, they would've stuck to it to qualify for the 2002 Oscars. Then they moved it to March, 2002, then back to Jan. 11, 2002, then Spring 2002 before deciding on a summer release. And it all makes sense. Releasing it amidst the summer crap would make it stand out more and leave undernourished critics panting and raving.

dreamworks has publicly stated that the reasoning for moving RTP back was because of the oscar quality work being done. they knew that they already had an oscar quality film in 2001 so they went with A Beautiful Mind and put RTP in the summer.

also, RTP was delayed because sam mendes needed more time to score the film and edit it.

Of course they'd say something like that. What did you expect them to say? That it sucked and it needed more work?

also, RTP was delayed because sam mendes needed more time to score the film and edit it.

Not surprising. Directors always need more time. I bet you Sam Mendes is working on his director's cut as we speak.

Their reasoning for not releasing it in 2001 is very valid despite max's ignorant comments. Their claim that A Beautiful Mind was Oscar worthy cae true so why not save another such film for the next year?

Ignorant comments? Anyone who believes everything a studio publicist says *is* ignorant. Besides, Oscar-worthy doesn't necessarily mean it's actually a great film. ROAD TO PERDITION is not a bad film. It's just not a very good film. Is it an Oscar-worthy film? No. Is there Oscar written all over it? Yes.

Wow....you know, back in march and april when i first heard news about crocodille hunter collision course,i knew i would be seeing it,but i was almost positive it would bomb...now,if those numbers are right,i never EVER thought i would see the day come when crocodille hunter had more theaters then halloween. Not that its a bad thing necessarily,i mean i like both movies and want to see them and wish them luck.

I may be horribly wrong but Halloween may do considerably better than some expectations. I was at the theater tonight to see The Road to Perdition (excellent btw) and the 7:45 showing of Halloween was sold out. The last time I ever remember a theater being sold out was back around Titanic.

So who knows maybe Halloween will do better. I'm not a fan of the flick but I'd love to see a smaller movie do bigger numbers.

Exactly how it was at my theater! On Road To Perdition's one screen it wasn't sold out. On Halloween's 2 screens (biggest two of the theater) they were both sold out!
