When homosexuality was legalised back in 1967 did anyone dream that some four decades on a British grandmother and grandfather wanting to adopt their own grandchildren would be refused permission and the children adopted instead by two gay men?

The case in Edinburgh reported today, where precisely this grotesque development has occurred, illustrates the sickening way in which what started out as a decent attempt to be tolerant towards a minority lifestyle has turned into a totalitarian assault upon family life and human rights.

Embrace for comfort: The grandparents yesterday were distraught

For two years these grandparents fought for their right to care for the children, a five-year-old boy and his four-year-old sister, whose 26-year-old mother is a recovering heroin addict. But at 46 and 59 they were ruled to be too old to adopt.

Reluctantly, therefore, they agreed to the children being adopted by another couple, on the basis they would be brought up by a loving mother and father figure. But although several heterosexual couples were available to adopt them, the children were handed over instead to two gay men.

When the devastated grandparents objected they were threatened that unless they dropped their opposition they would never see their grandchildren again on account of their ‘negative’ attitude towards gay adoption. What a disgusting brand of totalitarianism it is when the State orders children to live with gay men rather than live with their grandparents. A decision founded upon the State's ageist view that 46 and 59 is too old to raise children! What about all the parents who are of that age, will their children be taken from them.

This decision is one of particular cruelty. The decision itself is bad enough, but the grandparents’ description of how they were treated give us a chilling insight into the Stasi-like approach of modern social services.

As storm rages over siblings' forced adoption by gay men, 5-year-old pleads: 'We want to stay with our gran and grandad'
They were told that if they so much as objected to the adoption of the children by the gay couple then they would never be allowed to see the children again.

‘You can either accept it,’ the grandparents were told by social workers, ‘and there’s a chance you’ll see the children twice a year, or you can take that stance and never see them again.’ The Stalinist secret police couldn’t have put it better. An absolute disgrace. The children's lives affected so that gay people can celebrate a "rights" victory. Sickening.

Why are you not angry about the law that says they are too old to adopt? The article doesn't address in what manner the couple objected, but if it were in a manner that was intolerant of people living within the structure of the law, then that is only going to hurt their case. I don't understand why this is an "assault on family values" and not a valid argument against age limitations on the rights to adopt.

Why are you not angry about the law that says they are too old to adopt?I am. I wrote:

"A decision founded upon the State's ageist view that 46 and 59 is too old to raise children! What about all the parents who are of that age, will their children be taken from them."

The last part clearly mocks the reasoning of the decision, by offering a suggestion, one of sarcasm, that parents of a certain age will lose their children.

I don't understand why this is an "assault on family values" and not a valid argument against age limitations on the rights to adopt. Its an issue of State having power over families, inclusive of both the power over the children's future and the imposition of ageist policies.

Ah, I see that I was carrying over your comments about equal rights for gays from another thread. No doubt, you were clearly speaking out against the unfairness of age limits imposed on adoption rights. I totally agree that is a sack of bullshit, and baring they are physically and mentally sound a persons age should have no baring. I would add that social service intervention should be provided in cases where the adoptive parents are older, to assess on going care, but not at 46 and 59, an average 53 doesn't seem that old at all really.

The language used by both the newspaper article and the poster carry the stench of homophobia and bigotry and have little to nothing to do with the ageism that is claimed to be at the center of this case.

The results would have been the same if it were a heterosexual couple petitioning to adopt the children and the fact that it is a gay couple at heart is only exploited in an attempt to justify a prejudiced, bigoted, anti-family agenda.

FYI Gay people have families and values.
