To list the pictures that come anywhere close to deserving this title:
The Bridge on the River Kwai
Lawrence of Arabia
In the Heat of the Night
The Godfather
Terms of Endearment
Amadeus
The Last Emperor
No Country for Old Men

Though I've liked plenty of others. I've seen all of them, and it should be pretty shocking how few of them really deserve the title 'Best Movie of the Year', but for some reason, I'm not invested enough in the Academy's sways and flows to care.

Well, Unforgiven is my all-time favorite movie. The Godfather isn't too far behind it. Godfather, Part II is up there as well.

I also own No Country for Old Men, The Departed, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, Gladiator, Braveheart, Forrest Gump, Ben-Hur, Lawrence of Arabia, Casablanca, and Bridge on the River Kwai.

Hard to go wrong with The Sting, In the Heat of the Night, West Side Story, Singin' in the Rain, and My Fair Lady.

All About Eve won that year.
My mistake. It's hard for me to not associate Sunset Boulevard with that year. But I remember now that All About Eve won despite Boulevard's acclaim and large number of nominations.

Hate to burst another person's bubble, but The Greatest Show on Earth won in 1952, not Singin' in the Rain.

Six, if you count his footage at the end of "Godfather II" at the beginning of "Godfather III." ;)

Oliver!-See "Chicago"...plus I've loved this movie since forever and I've seen it on a few "worst best pic winners" lists...bullshit.

Definitely not bad...but better than fellow '68 Best Pic nominees "Romeo and Juliet" or "The Lion in Winter"?? I'm not so sure. : ?

i'll comment on every best pic winner i've seen

1940 - Rebecca - One of Hitchcock's most underrated
1941 - How Green Was My Valley - Maligned unfairly for beating Citizen Kane if a bit overly cliched
1942 - Mrs. Miniver - An average movie
1943 - Casablanca - One of my all-time favorite Best Picture winners, lives up to its classic status
1944 - Going My Way - Overly sentimental and a bit dated
1945 - The Lost Weekend - Terrific performance by Ray Milliand
1946 - The Best Years of Our Lives -- Truly a great film
1947 - Gentleman's Agreement - Good if even if Peck's performance oozes with Hollywood self-righteousness
1948 - Hamlet - I prefer Branagh's version
1949 - All the King's Men - Great central performance
1950 - All About Eve - Very good even if I prefer Sunset Blvd.
1951 - An American in Paris - Gene Kelly is terrific even if the film is dated
1952 - The Greatest Show on Earth - While not the worst movie to win, it is certainly a subpar effort
1953 - From Here to Eternity - Overrated
1954 - On the Waterfront - Brando gives one of cinema's great performances in one of the greatest Oscar winners
1955 - Marty - A small personal favorite of mine
1956 - Around the World in 80 Days - Nothing compelling
1957 - Bridge on the River Kwai - A bit long but rather compelling
1958 - Gigi - One of my least favorite movies
1959 - Ben-Hur - A solid epic with that amazing chariot race
1960 - The Apartment - Billy Wilder may be one of the most underrated directors as hard as that may be to believe
1961 - West Side Story - Another musical that does nothing for me
1962 - Lawrence of Arabia - One of the greatest cinematic feats
1964 - My Fair Lady - Overly long musical
1965 - The Sound of Music - Overly long, but more enjoyable than My Fair Lady
1966 - A Man For All Seasons - Terrific look with great performances
1967 - In the Heat of the Night - Important movie but a little too heavy handed at times
1968 - Oliver! - Unjustly maligned, but still far from great
1969 - Midnight Cowboy - A very edgy film for Oscar
1970 - Patton - George C. Scott is brilliant - one of my very favorites
1971 - The French Connection - Oscar continues its run of unconventional wins
1972 - The Godfather - Another all-time great wins
1973 - The Sting - Certainly a fun movie, but far from great
1974 - The Godfather II - One of the great sequels
1975 - One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - A great staple of 70's cinema
1976 - Rocky - Enjoyable movie but nothing comparable to Taxi Driver
1977 - Annie Hall - Diane Keaton gives a great central performance
1978 - The Deer Hunter - Another controversial movie, its critics are a little too harsh on its flaws
1979 - Kramer vs. Kramer - Certainly the weakest winner of the 70's
1980 - Ordinary People - Raging Bull is an all-time great movie, but this film has become an underrated classic
1981 - Chariots of Fire - A fine film, but not one of the greats
1982 - Gandhi - Love Kingsley and the production, but the movie is a bit long
1983 - Terms of Endearment - No thank you
1984 - Amadeus - Another favorite
1985 - Out of Africa - Beautiful cinematography does not make a great movie
1986 - Platoon - Hampered by Sheen's awful narration
1987 - The Last Emperor - One of the great unforgotten Oscar winners
1988 - Rain Man - I like Hoffman, but the movie was a bit cliched
1989 - Driving Miss Daisy - eh
1990 - Dances With Wolves - Another movie hampered by bad narration, still an ambitious film that fails in the last third of the movie -- Goodfellas a far better film
1991 - The Silence of the Lambs - Hopkins and Foster are brilliant
1992 - Unforgiven - One of my favorite westerns
1993 - Schindler's List - Certainly lives up to the hype an unflinching movie
1994 - Forrest Gump - Yes its a bit revisionist and a little too sentimental and it beat Quiz Show, Shawshank and Pulp Fiction but its an endearing movie
1995- Braveheart - Yes, its flawed but I really like this movie
1996 - The English Patient - A little too long the movie loses steam but its a good movie
1997 - Titantic - Say what you want about the love story, Cameron displayed that he is a great filmmaker
1998 - Shakespeare in Love - I've watched this movie three times and I have fallen asleep all three times
1999 - American Beauty - Great black comedy
2000 - Gladiator - Hasn't aged as well with me, but still an enjoyable romp (2000 had a weak slate of movies)
2001- A Beautiful Mind - Movie didn't hold up as well on repeat viewings, but I like Crowe
2002 - Chicago - I plain don't like this movie
2003 - Return of the King - I make no apologies I love this trilogy, the greatest cinematic events of my life
2004 - Million Dollar Baby - A rough film to watch
2005 - Crash - ugh, another weak year
2006 - The Departed - This movie has become underrated to a degree,
2007 - No Country For Old Men - One of the Coen's best, may not be There Will Be Blood, but still glad to see the Academy honor it
2008 - Slumdog Millionaire - Yes the movie is engaging, but it offers little else, a very uninspired list of nominees from a rather weak year for movies

I should have seen the rest of the winners by the end of next week

That being said my five favorite Best Picture winners

Casablanca
On the Waterfront
Lawrence of Arabia
The Godfather 1/II
Return of the King

My top 5 fave:

5. Unforgiven - This film could've also been called "The Final Chapter Of The Man With No Name, But Now We've Given Him A Name, Punk".

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg214/themightycelestial_bucket/movies/rn_unforgiven_070207_ssh-1.jpg

4. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Whenever I watch this movie, I'm always reminded that, for me, this is about as good as it gets (...sorry). I really like Nicholson's portrayal of Randall McMurphy as a mischievious criminal who ends up becoming a rebellious leader of & eventually, a friend to Billy & the rest the Cuckoo's Nest. Jack's performance is not of a man overly or angelically transformed, but as someone who's ability to care is gradually bought up to the surface by the only type of people who could cause such a subtle & internal catalyst: a group of guys who are crazier than he is.

3. Gandhi - The British Empire, humbled via one man & the power of peaceful resistance.
Nuff said.

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg214/themightycelestial_bucket/Gandhi3-3.jpg?t=1214183344

2. The Godfather II - I know that the rest of the planet says that this one is the superior film, but I myself like the first one better. Now don't get me wrong, G-2 is practically a perfect movie. However IMO, G-1 is just a bit more perfect. That being said, if only all sequels could match the quality ratio that this one did with its predecessor, then I bet that there wouldn't be any more wars in the world.
Like,
ever.

1. The Godfather - I don't want to like this movie as much as I do. Because, when it comes to movies, I like it when my opinion veers away from that which the mainstream tends to think. However, when it comes to the Godfather,
I was made an offer that my tastes in cinematic-entertainment could not refuse.
