View Full Version : Brett Ratner or Michael Bay-Which Director Do You Hate The Most?

These two similar directors seem to both get the most amount of hate (well, besides Uwe Boll) on these boards and I was just wondering which one everyone hated more of the two?
Personally, I'd have to go with Michael Bay. Other than X3, Ratner's not really gotten the opportunities Bay has to make a big blockbuster picture. And at least Ratner's obnoxious explosions are always fun. Bay's come off like he's filming a porno with explosions. Except his plots are worse. And the humour is much better in a porno. Anyways, I'm really looking forward to Ratner's BHC4, while if Transformers 2 is anything like the first 1 will have me lose faith in humanity once again. Plus Bay's production company rapes one of my all time favorite horror films about once a year. Here's how I'd rate their filmographys:
Ratner:
Red Dragon- 8.5/10
Rush Hour- 8/10
Money Talks- 7.5/10
The Family Man- 7.5/10
X3:The Last Stand- 7.5/10
Rush Hour 2- 7/10
After the Sunset- 6.5/10
Rush Hour 3- 6/10
Bay:
Bad Boys 2- 7.5/10
The Rock- 7/10
Bad Boys- 7/10
Armageddon- 6.5/10
Transformers- 5.5/10
Pearl Harbor- 5/10
The Island- 4.5/10

I'm not sure, Bay's movies are more fun because he's made more fun/blockbusters, but at least Ratner tries other genre's like thriller and comedy/action comedy/romance etc. Even though Bay's movies are guilty pleasures, I like Red Dragon the most out of all the listed movies.

These guys might not Scorsese it when it comes to dialogue but they can make a movie that sells. To an avid movie watcher like myself who doesn't critique on "the art" and all that crap, I enjoy these guys' movie purely for the entertainment.....guess I'm not an expert then hahahahahaha

Ratner does not ask for final cut - he makes a product, hands it in and the studio can tamper with his "vision" until they have a general concensus of what is marketable. This 'gunslinger-for-hire' approach tells me we are not dealing with an artist, but a guy doing a McJob with no motivation other than the paycheck...
Ratner is a wanker. Bay at least has clout and his vision, for better or worse, is not compromised.
Still, both are shit.

Say what you want about the quanity of the CONTENT of his movies, you can't say that Bay is a bad filmmaker. If ANYTHING, the man knows how to make a movie. The Rock and Armageddon were ridiculous but fun and undeniably entertaining, helped along by the fact that they were funny as well as melodramatic and so-over-the-top-it-should-be-illegal. So sure, Pearl Harbour was an insult to modern history, and The Island was a crapfest, mainly because the characters were impossible to identify with (probably becuse they're not even REAL PEOPLE!!!), but fuck if Transformers wasn't the most hands-down entertaining movie of 2007. And now, the sequel looks to blow all other blockbuster entertainments of the summer right out of the water.
That said, Brett Ratner is not only a hack who doesn't have a single REMINANT of an original cinematic idea in his head, but also is so full of himself it makes me want to puke every time his name shows up, both in text and in the voice-over, 5 times in the 2-minute trailers for his films. As much as he'd like to think it true, Ratner hasn't yet directed ANYTHING that even gets him NEAR to a point where he can put his name on a movie, like Scorsese or Spielberg.
So in short: Bay does his big, over-done, ridiculously-over-the-top but entertaining thing, and I have no problem with it. On the other hand, fuck Brett Ratner and his piss-poor, director-for-hire movies. And fuck his music videos, too - Has anyone seen that Jessica Simpson video with the roller-disco? FUCK HIM!!

I voteed for Ratner.
Bay makes some great & bad popcorns movies like good-Transformers,Armagoddenm & of course The Rock & bad-pearl harbor. Bay is one of the best at only blowing stuff up really well.
Transformers 2 looks like a beast. That movie should be a great times at the movies.

I'm not a fan of the Rat. He's one of the worst filmmakers ever. Uwe Boll isn't far behind him, infact to be fair Uwe Boll is miles behind, but he's miles behind everyone, but relatively speaking Ratner's more in the Uwe Boll league than any other.
Bay is better than Rat, but still isn't great. I liked Pearl Harbour, The Rock and Armageddon. All of those are 7/10s.

I dont hate either of them, but I like Michael Bay more, I thought Transformers, The Rock and The Island were great. Of Ratner's I like the Rush Hour trilogy, The Family Man and Red Dragon, but X-Men 3 sucks.

I'm more of a Michael Bay fan than a Brett Ratner fan. Bay has made some really fun, cool movies to sit through. Ratner has made some good or decent movies, but has some real duds on his resume too. Plus, he did a horrendous job with X3 which I do hate him for.

The Michael Bay hate continues to baffle me. Bay rocks. Plain and simple. Ratner has yet to make a film I've liked...so I voted for him.

People have their likes and dislikes. Other than being a bit full of himself, I'm not really sure why Eli Roth gets so much hate. The guy hasn't done a thing I haven't loved, and I consider him the most prominant horror director today.
But then again, most people probobly think the same thing about Michael Bay and the action-blockbuster genre.
Some people enjoy being peed on.
Different strokes for different folks.

I voted for Ratner. Michael Bay hasn't really made a movie that I've loved, but none that I've hated.
Bad Boys and the Rock are (as far as his filmography goes) great. Transformers was better than it needed to be and I thought the Island was unfairly dumped on. Plus, he was in a pretty good FIOS commercial which poked fun at himself, demanding things be "awesome".
Ratner...meh. Besides an unnecessary, albeit pretty decent remake in Red Dragon and Rush Hour 2, which is better than 1 IMO, don't really care about the movies he's made. He also comes off as kind of a douche, so maybe my opinion isn't purely based on his filmography. But I wouldn't say that I hate him, either.

Fuck Brett Ratner in his Chris Tucker lovin' ass!
Words to live by. Mainly for being Tom Rothman's tool in X-Men 3.
Michael Bay is above Brett Ratner any day.

Why do you hate Kevin Smith? I'm not the biggest Kevin Smith fan out there, I merely chose my s/n shortly after I'd seen Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and thought of all the kids talking shit about them on the internet. I think one of them was called magnoliafan, so I threw in Kevin Smith instead.
Plus I was 14 years old at the time, so dick and fart jokes were solid gold in my book. I really wish I could change my name now though, because I feel like I've grown out of him...
Anyways I'm really suprised at how many people hate Brett Ratner more than Bay.

I really don't hate these guys. They're like the fast-food of the movie industry. You go in with low expectations, get somewhat entertained and leave the cinema somewhat but not exactly completely satisfied and you go on with your life.
You don't go into a McDonalds expecting to have the greatest meal of your life, but it does the trick until the time comes when you can have a REAL meal. Or in this case an intelligent movie.

Brett Ratner is a no talent hack the fact that this guy continues to get work just shows how fucked up hollywood really is.
Michael Bay while I'm not a big fan of his work there's no denying that this guy knows how to do action

At least Bay's films are entertaining and don't over do it on the unnecessary humor. Brett Ratner destroyed a franchise (X-Men) and than proceeded to destroy his own franchise (Rush Hour).
Ratner:
Red Dragon- 5.5/10
Rush Hour- 7/10
Money Talks- 4/10
The Family Man- 6/10
X3:The Last Stand- 6.5/10
Rush Hour 2- 7/10
After the Sunset- 6/10
Rush Hour 3- 5/10
Bay:
Bad Boys 2- 7/10
The Rock- 8/10
Bad Boys- 7/10
Armageddon- 6.5/10
Transformers- 8/10
Pearl Harbor- 6.5/10
The Island- 6.5/10

Let's see...
The Rock - 5/10
Armageddon - 1/10
Pearl Harbor - 1/10
Bad Boys II - 0/10
The Island - 4/10
I didn't see Transformers, and I don't plan to see the sequel either. Life is too short. The Bay movies that I've seen have been either bland and mediocre or as entertaining as a brain aneurysm. I'm not even sure why I was generous enough to give Armageddon and Pearl Harbor 1/10, because I seriously can't think of anything that I liked about them.
I haven't seen enough of Ratner's movies to comment. I remember seeing Red Dragon a while back, which sucked (though it was slightly better than Hannibal). I saw Rush Hour when I was younger and I don't remember it very well, and I have no real interest in watching it again.
