Matt Damon and George Nolfi (screenwriter on Bourne Ultimatum) have a new sci-fi project set to film in the fall: The Adjustment Bureau. It's based on a short story by Phillip K. Dick.

Here's the article from Variety:

With this, Inception, and Avatar, the sci-fi genre is set to get a much needed shot in the arm. Aside from Children of Men and Minority Report, I can't recall any truly great sci-fi films from this decade, which is a shame.

Regarding recent sci-fi: Sunshine wasn't bad, except for its heavily flawed third act, and I thought that Richard Linklater's A Scanner Darkly was also one of the most fantastic Philip K. Dick adaptations. And if you look far back to the beginning of the decade, we also had A. I. Artificial Intelligence. And if you count WALL-E, that's another one. But in general: yeah, we haven't seen much old-fashioned sci fi recently, so this, Inception, Avatar, and dont forget the upcoming Moon with Sam Rockwell, seem like pretty viable comebacks for the genre.

In any case... Philip K. Dick, sci-fi and Matt Damon all in one sentence makes me happy. Can't wait to hear more. Damon is probably one of the most interesting (and underrated - how didn't he get an Oscar nom for The Departed?!?!) actors of this generation.

It seems that Matt Damon can do no wrong lately. And this sounds like it will continue that trend.

Forgot about Moon, although that strikes me as more of an indie as opposed to a large-scale film. You have a point about WALL-E. I should have been more specific: we haven't gotten many good live-action sci-fi films. Sunshine was good until the last act. I just watched Serenity, and that was pretty good.

It's also a shame that a lot of the really good sci-fi TV series have either finished or are finishing their runs: Farscape, Stargate SG-1, Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica. It seems that good sci-fi migrated from the silver screen to the TV screen and is now migrating back.

Bigred: You're absolutely right about Damon. With this, The Informant, Green Zone, and that Mandela film, he's set to have a great couple of years.

Shit... totally forgot about Serenity! And, as you said, we've had some really good TV sci-fi recently (also including Joss Whedon's Firefly series, can't foget that!).

I also recently read about another new sci-fi movie coming out, called Never Let Me Go, directed by Mark Romanek (whose #1 influence in his entire career, according to him, is 2001: A Space Odyssey, so this has huge potential) and starring Keira Knightley. It's based upon an apparently really good sci-fi novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, and is about a bunch of kids who grew up in a boarding school in order to discover that they're actually clones bred for organ donation. Sounds exactly like The Island, but supposedly this is going to be like The Island, only good and actually thought-provoking.

Anyway, these coming years definitely look like a very promising sci-fi comeback. Can't wait, it's my favourite genre...!

So . . . we can expect another lawsuit from the makers of The Clonus Horror?

Well, since it's based on an actual novel, they might be able to avoid a suit. That doesn't mean one won't be attempted, though.

Looks like Emily Blunt has joined the cast:

I don't know if this will be as good as I hope INCEPTION will be, but hopefully, TAB will add to some of the good sci-fi we've enjoyed this decade.

Two new cast members have been added: Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker) and Oscar nominee Shoreh Aghdashloo (House of Sand and Fog).

You can never have to much sci-fi.

These recent casting announcements are adding to my growing excitement. Thanks corran, for keeping us updated.

You're absolutely right, though I'd qualify that as "you can never have too much good sci-fi."

Oh, and thanks. I try to keep my film-specific threads as up to date as possible.

Filming begins in a few weeks, so I'll keep my eyes peeled for any interesting set photos.

It sounds interesting. Matt Damon hasn't done any wrong in my eyes (he's one my 5 top working actors right now) for a while now so Ill definitely be looking forward to this project especially since Nolfi is writing it also. Hollywood has really been stepping up their scifi game lately; Inception looks awesome, District 9 was excellent, Sunshine was one of my favorites from 07, Pandorum looks like a true return to scifi horror, and now with this. I see that Anthony Mackie is also going to be in it, he's a pretty good actor he shows a lot promise and Emily Blunt is also in this who is really taking off. I am anticipating this one 2010 is going to be a good year.

Fair enough. I thought it started out great but lost its way in the last 30 minutes.

I haven't found the specific article yet, but EW is reporting that John Slattery (Mad Men) will be joining the cast. His character is simply known as "The Boss", who is supposedly the one behind the "strange circumstances" faced by Damon and Blunt's characters.
