View Full Version : Your 2009 Awards (Thus Far)
Disclamer: This is NOT designed as an Oscar (or any other award) prediction thread, nor, at this stage, to house anyone's final lists. It's a place where, through the year, you can keep a rolling record of the best films and performances you've seen.
My lists are all based on UK screening dates.
126 2009 releases seen.

SAI, a lot of your nominees ... Revolutionary Road, Rachel Getting Married, The Wrestler, Milk, Doubt, and Ben Button are all from 08. Just letting ya know.
From 2009, I've only seen Taken, Coraline, and Watchmen, so I can't really contribute to this thread.
SAI, a lot of your nominees ... Revolutionary Road, Rachel Getting Married, The Wrestler, Milk, Doubt, and Ben Button are all from 08. Just letting ya know.
ALL nominees were released in the UK, where I live, in 2009 or, in the case of The Heart is a Dark Forest, screened in the UK at a film Festival in 2009. Those are my eligibility rules.

So I assume TWO LOVERS and NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH are early 2009 releases instead of late 2008??? I caught them on DVD this summer, and was just wondering. NetFlix and IMDb list them as 2008...

Two Lovers is a 2009 release.
Nothing But the Truth actually did get a VERY limited release in 2008 though. That's why it's on my 2008 list and why I don't have it in any categories for this year. If I included it as a 2009 release, it would definitely be up for several categories, especially best actress and screenplay and best picture.

I know! She and the Grey Gardens gals are competing for Emmys instead! I wish the movies released this year had equally great roles for women aside from the ubiquitous and overrated Meryl Streep!
I thought there was some really good work this year actually.
Powder Blue was not a very good movie, but Jessica Biel is wonderful in it.
Maria Bello is excellent in a very fucked up movie called Downloading Nancy.
Charlize Theron is terrific in a movie that actually hasn't opened yet called The Burning Plain. Kim Basinger and the actress playing Theron's character as a young girl are great in it as well.
Amy Adams and Emily Blunt are wonderful in Sunshine Cleaning.
Mélanie Laurent is terrific in Inglourious Basterds.
Cameron Diaz is fantastic in the underrated and heart breaking yet life affirming My Sister's Keeper.
Infact, she's not the only one great in that. Abigail Breslin and especially Sofia Vassilieva are both wonderful in that as well.
Julia Roberts is great in Duplicity.
Speaking of Julia Roberts, there is a movie that she's in that I don't know when it's going to open but it's called Fireflies in the Garden and she's very good in it as is Shanon Lucia, Emily Watson and Carrie Ann Moss.
Marion Cotillard is very good in Public Enemies.
I loved Sandra Bullock's performance in The Proposal, which is one of the year's most pleasant surprises.
Finally, I thought both Monica Potter and Sara Paxton were both excellent in the Last House on the Left remake.
So there has actually been several good female roles/performances this year IMO.

Thanks...I haven't even heard of some of the films you mentioned (southwest Louisiana isn't exactly the mecca of independent film festivals!). And while I loved Melanie & Diane in BASTERDS...they're def. on my list of favorite supporting performances. I was actually talking about the lack of leading ladies.

District 9
Gran Torino
Is Anybody There?
Moon
Slumdog Millionaire
I concede that there's a little bit of personal preference in that, because while the films I listed and some I've omitted are all very good, Is Anybody There? is just pitched perfectly for the story it's trying to tell, and I loved it.
BEST DIRECTOR
Katherine Bigelow- The Hurt Locker
Danny Boyle- Slumdog Millionaire
Neill Blomkamp- District 9
Terry Gilliam- The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Boyle and Gilliam are both up there for surmounting incredible adversity while filming (Boyle in organising a shoot in Mumbai and Gilliam in working around the loss of Heath Ledger) to make enjoyable films, but for out and out terrific direction, has to be Bigelow- her film just utterly exhausts you with non-stop tension.
