Since this year has been decidedly less than stellar movie wise, I'd like to know what people think are the worst movies of the year.

My Picks are...
Mission to Mars
Battlefield Earth
The Beach
The Skulls

Close behind them...
Gone in 60 Seconds

My pick goes to Scream 3. I haven't seen many horrible movies this year. Gone In 60 Seconds was allright.

I'd have to agree with Mission To Mars topping your list, I haven't seen all the movies this year, mostly because I didn't feel good about most of the trailers...but Mission to Mars was the biggest let down of all the ones I have seen so far this year.

I try to avoid anything with Nicholas Cage in it...I can't stand to look at him let alone listen to him. /ubb/frown.gif Him and that David Schwimmer guy from "Friends"....As far am I concerned they two sides to the same coin. /ubb/tongue.gif

Although I like "Friends" for some reason...probably because he is not the only main character. /ubb/smile.gif

Sorry, I just noticed that a similar discussion is going on in the Top 10 forum. Should have posted there.

But feel free to discuss if you want.

Thankfully nobody had to suffer through the biggest piece of pretentious crap to come out of Hollywood in years, like I did, but HANGING UP, has easily been the worst film that I've seen so far this year.

BLACK & WHITE is also a close second...

Supernova outstinks them all.

I must agree that ALL of the films listed hitherto do in fact suck. Actually, it's better you didn't post in the top 10 because there's way too many posts in the top 10. I'd say as follows for a top 5 worst:
1. Supernova
2. Mission to Mars
3. Battlefield: Earth
4. Dinosaur
5. Gone in 60 seconds

I too think all of the films mentioned so far suck here's my list

1.Battlefield Earth
2.Eye of the Beholder
3.The Beach
4.Black & White
5.Mission to Mars

I purposely haven't seen The Skulls, Hanging Up or Supernova and I don't think that will change anytime soon.

WHAT ARE YOU GUYS TALKIN ABOUT? THE BEACH AND MISSION TO MARS WERE GREAT!!! THEY ARE ON MY FAVORITE MOVIES OF 2000... HANGING UP WAS SHIT, I WAS HAPPY TO SEE THAT I COULD GET MY MONEY BACK AFTER WALKING OUT HALF WAY THROUGH SNOW DAY, AND READY TO RUMBLE: PUKE!

stefanb
06-26-2000, 05:21 PM
HEY JAKE-14. ME AND SOME OTHER GUYS HERE (WHO DIDN'T DIRECTLY CONTACT ME AND SAY SO, BUT I KNOW THEY'RE THINKING IT) WERE SORTA HOPING YOU'D EXPLAIN YOUR INABLILITY TO TYPE ANYTHING USING regular sized letters. JUST SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT WHILE WE ALL STAND HERE "SCREAMING" THINGS FOR NO REASON AT ALL!!!!

On a separate note, Mission To Mars is way out on top of my 'Formage 2000' (formage being french for cheese - as in cheesy movies... No, I'm not french either). Was it just me, or did anyone else come out feeling like they'd just watched a 2 hour commercial for Dr.Pepper and M&M's? Seriously.... With certain friends, we make an annoying habbit of screaming "PLUG!" everytime a movie has a shameless product plug.....

Example... In the movie Hard Rain, the entire town is under several feet of water, and it just makes sense the power wouldn't be working. Yet, he's in the school in 5 feet of water and lit up like a christmas tree in the backgroud is a great big Pepsi machine with a logo that manages to fill at lest half the screen...

Well, the slow-motion spinning bag of Dr.Pepper just sent me off the deep-end in this movie. They managed to follow it up with the longest M&M plug in movie history. Aside from the fact it was a shitty story with pathetic acting, the shamless product plugs just blew this peice of trash to the top of All-Time Formage list. 2.5/10

Actually, I thought GONE IN SIXTY SECONDS was kinda okay. I'm giving it about a 6.5/10 --> so-so. I saw it just the other day, after hearing a lot of crap about it, and all I could say is...well, what exactly were you expecting from a Bruckheimer film?

It was kinda loud, had a lot of testosterone, bunch of one-liners (most of which didn't work, IMHO), a couple of cool action scenes and some very cool cars. I can't say that I was ever bored during the movie, although it didn't blow me away either. All in all, an okay film.

What exactly did people HATE about it? (and let's try to be a little more constructive here..."it just sucked!", ain't gonna cut it /ubb/smile.gif

QUENTIN
06-26-2000, 11:05 PM
I didn't hate it I just as I said before didn't think it was a good film I would probably give it either 5.5/10 or 6/10 not horrible but not good at all.

These very bad movies are in an order from very bad to bad.

1:Battlefield Earth
2:Mission to Mars
3:Titan A.E.

Well guys I for one loved The Beach. I think I'm the only person on this planet that loved it.

The worst movies of the year would have to be:

Black And White (pure shit)
The Skulls
Mission to Mars

Gone in 60 seconds is far from the worst but it's not too good either. It makes Con Air look like a SMART movie

Can I know why people hate The Beach? I got a big The Beach poster on my wall, right next to American Psycho.

stefanb

I actually didn't find "The Skulls" to be that bad of a show at all. We were in line to see American Beauty (for the first time), and the one girl with us (I think she just has a wet panty for the Joshua Jackson, Dawson's River kid, but that's aside the point). Anyway. She up and wanted to go to Skulls instead. I personally didn't want to, but went in expecting it to totally suck ass big time. She'd managed to convince the rest of our little group to change movies. Frankly, American Beauty was far, far better, but that also is adide the point here. So, I went in expecting the worst show on earth, and it didn't seem like that much of a let-down to me. Let's face it, it's all about expectations. You can go into a WAY over-hyped flick (which is actually a good show), and come out thinking it sucked ass, but if you go into a mediocre film and expect it to blow, it's alot easier to come out not hating it.

Look at 'Star Wars: Episode I'. A Classic example of this. If you'd never ever heard of Star Wars, and if you had no idea what it was even remotly about, people would be tripping over themselves to see this show over and over and over again. After waiting 20 years since the original trilogy, everybody expected some big religious experience to happen. IT'S JUST A MOVIE!!! And frankly, it was pretty cool. But George, one more retarded character like Jar Jar Binx, and we're gonna send a lynch mob after you.

Frankly, I can't believe nobody has mentioned "House on Haunted Hill" as an addition to the 'Formagè 2000', cheesy movie list. Now I went in expecting crap, and found exactly that --> Crap.

I was thinking of defending "Mission to Mars", but at the risk of getting lynched, I better not.

Some bad movies this year: Reindeer Games, Titan A.E., Supernova, Ready 2 Rumble, Drowning Mona

I'm with Screamer581. Scream 3 wasn't the best of the trilogy, but it was no where near crappy - I really liked. I must agree though - "Mission to Mars" really bit the big one - the only good part was seeing Sigourney and her new blonde locks, but hey, even that got old after awhile.

csmoose
06-29-2000, 01:27 PM
Umm, I think you're thinking of Galaxy Quest with Sigourney Weaver not Mission to Mars with an equally feminie Gary Senise.

And yes, Sigourney played an excellent ditz in Quest. I'll go out on a limb here and say that she's got to be one of Hollywood's most talented actresses.

Screamer581 - Scream 3 was the worst scream ever. I just hate those happy endings.

JAKE-14... The Beach was teriible. I hate Leonardo DiCaprio. He can´t really act. AND JAKE, STOP SHOUTING YOU A__HOLE

I haven't seen a really bad movie all year, and I have been going to the cinema. I thought The Beach was superb, and (as far as I know) I've had the good fortune to have avoided the other turkeys you're all talking about. The only one I've come close to not liking was Scream 3 - definitely the weak link, and a pretty obvious killer (despite the stupid denoument with full explanation needed).

I actually review films for the day of release on the radio (not as glamorous as it sounds), so it looks like the critics at large have been getting it right so far. Besides, if you're old enough to see a (15), you should have a rough idea if it's going to be your sort of film, and that you know if any of the (famous) leads are going to wind you up. What I want to know - have any of you actually walked out of a film? I think I did once, but I can't remember what it was. I know I walked out after Deep Impact disgusted that the kids survived..

Hey Matias! Leo can't act??? Ever seen BasketBall Diaries? What's Eating Gilbert Grape? This Boy's Life, Celebrity?

Come on man...are you jealous or something or are you blind? Hate him, love him but nobody can deny that he's a great actor. He held his own against De Niro for christ sakes!!!

Stefanb... I was visiting my grandmom last week. She doesn´t have a computer, so I´m sorry for my mistake.
Leonardo should make some cooler movie, and show that he can be something else than a teenage-girl dream. Like Brad Pitt; the girls are all over him, but oh boy can that man act!

Ok, since everyone else is doing this i thought i should give my two cents on this.

Mission To Mars - It was great, i have no idea why y'all hated it so much. I guess i just love sci-fi

Battlefield Earth - I read the book before seeing this film so i guess that's part of the reason why i hated it, it was just crap.

Scream 3 - It was just like Halloween H20, a good end to the series although not the best but still not totally crappy.

Me, Myself & Irene - Ok, this one would have to be near the top of crappiest movies of this year, too bad the sons weren't in it more.

Man there must be no advertisements over here cause i've heard nothing really about Black & White...wasn't Mike Tyson in it? Also, no offense, but if you're stupid enough to pay actual money to see a movie like Snow Day then you have no right to say you didn't like it. (well, you have a little right to...hehehe)

Tuukka
07-13-2000, 03:20 AM
People who say that DiCaprio can't act either haven't seen many of his films or they are just stupid. Leo has a very wide range as an actor. The fact that he is a teen idol doesn't make him any worse. He is far better and has a far greater range than Brad Pitt. Pitt is also pretty good, but nowhere as good as Leo.

...Haven't seen any bad theater movies this year. I don't go to see bad movies. I tend to know beforehand which films I'm going to like.

Scarface
07-13-2000, 01:39 PM
How can you say that Leo is a better actor than Pitt? Leo is pretty much the same role in every film except for Gilbert Grape. After becoming a teen idol after Titanic he would never do a role of a mentally ill, or somebody with a demeaning physical appearance. At least Pitt isn't afraid to look bad in films (12 Monkeys). Pitt has been in so many more great films than Leo and has gotten better and better everytime.

Tuukka

"After becoming a teen idol after Titanic he would never do a role of a mentally ill, or somebody with a demeaning physical appearance."

What are you talking about? Dicaprio has done only one role after Titanic. Leo's role in the Beach was hardly a flattering character. How can you know what kind of roles he will take in the future? Next he's going to play a violent gangster in Scorsese's Gangs of New York. besides, Pitt is also a teen idol. That hardly makes anyone a worse actor.

I agree that Brad has been in more great films than Leo, but how does that make him a better actor?

Leo has never given a bad performance. Even in Titanic he was pretty good, despite the badly written role. Brad has been really wooden in many films: Meet Joe Black and Seven Years In Tibet being good examples.

The point is: Brad can act well if he lands on the right role. Leo acts well always, no matter what the role is. Besides, Brad has a tendency towards overacting. Just check California, 12 Monkeys, Fight Club etc. I like him a lot in those films, but he IS overacting. (It made sense in the Fight Club, thought). Leo has a better understanding of small nuances, he is a lot more understated actor than Pitt.

I think this whole Brad versus Leo conversation is crap. Both are talented actors and tend to make good films. Pitt has been in more interesting films lately and he has had more interesting roles, but that doesn't make him a better actor. Period.

Crynot

I agree that Leo is a pretty decent actor. Look at his earlier role in The Basketball Diaries - he was great. Anyway.... Worst films:

Mission To Mars
Boys and Girls - absolutely sucked!!!
Battlefield Earth

I almost want to say A Scary Movie - but I just saw it and I'm still debating. It was pretty bad though.

Crynot - for he is coming

I agree with The Arrow: The Beach was a really good film (though it had its flaws), and DeCaprio was great in it. And Eye of the Beholder, another film some label as one of the worst of the year, was also a very engrossing, unconventional, and tragic love story. Thumbs up from me. But the worst movies I've seen so far this year?

Me, Myself & Irene
Black and White
Scary Movie
Whatever It Takes

Most of the films I've seen this year (I go to the movies at least once a week) have been pretty average. Despite a few standouts like American Psycho, Eye of the Beholder, Wonder Boys, and Time Code, it's been a pretty ho-hum year. Hopefully fall and winter will bring some really good films our way.

I thought that Gone In Sixty Seconds was Ok, I agree that it wasnt great, but it wasnt terrible either. Oh come on!!! Chicken run on the 'worst of 2000' list?!?!? Hell no. It was hardly a monumental achievment in motion picture history, but give it a break. There's good dialog like the whole "Chinkens go in, pies come out..... What kind of pies?..... Apple pies!!" and the guy screaming "The chickens are revolting!" and etc etc etc etc. Give it a break - it had it's moments, and it was a friggin claymation. It's not supposed to be a serious show.

The Next Best Thing was by far the worst movie I've seen this year. I can't believe that they kept filming after seeing Madonna's dailies from the first day of shooting.

The Troll Man
09-25-2000, 06:39 PM
Well I'm going nowhere near any collaboration between Rupert Everett and Madonna since he put her up to destroying "American Pie" (song, not movie!)... worst I've seen that's had a UK release this year is Stuart Little, which goes to show that no matter how good the technology is, bad voice acting can still ruin all the hard work...

I would like to say that my worst 5 films of 2000 are as follows /ubb/frown.gifSeeing as I live in the UK my films are behind yours, please don't mock me!)

1)Mission to goddamn mars!!! The advertising was blatantly obvious. The acting dire..Connie Neilsen this means you. Tim Robbins what were you thinking. The film was going to be a dud as soon as Brian De Palma signed the dotted line. Think of the great films he's released in the past 10 years which have been good.
2) The Bone Collector: Denzel was ok, but Angelina Jolie was just there to look nice and scream a bit, big city cop my ass.
3)The Patriot: Why the hell does Mel have to dis us Brits all the time. He did it in Braveheart and Galipoli and now this!!! Roaland Emmerich should be hung upside down in a dark room with flesh eating spiders covering his BODY!
4)Me Myself and Irene: One of the most boring comedies where ever I saw one. The Black kids were fun at first but grew annoying, Jim did a fairly descent job, but he should go back to Truman Show and Man on the Moon territory. Also this Gross out film season ie Scary Movie, Me Myself and Irene, American Pie, is getting tedious as each film tries to out gross each other
5) Scream 3: I admit I loved the first one it was fresh, tense, gory and funny everything a horror should be. The final part in the trilogy though is a let down. The actors speak their lines as if they are being held at gun point. While Wes Craven's direction is mediocre at best. Kevin Williamson you are desperatly needed!

The Worst Of 2000 thus far

Bless The Child - Horrible! Kim Basinger cannot act and the special effects and screenplay were juvenile and terrible!

Supernova - it was so lame and clunky that I had to turn it off......after the obligatory Robin Tunney breast shot

Eye Of The Beholder - Ashley Judd and Ewan MacGregor were good but the film was an uncomprehensable mess of a film

Gladiator - the most disappointing film of 2000. I was all hyped up expecting a kick ass blood bath but my expectations were destroyed by this long and boring film.

I haven't yet seen Battlefield Earth, Mission To Mars, Ready To Rumble, Screwed, Here On Earth, Rocky and Bullwinkle and Pokemon 2000 but I'm certain they are horrible!!!

Scream 3 was a good conclusion to the Scream series and I highly enjoyed it and why is everybody hating Black and White????? It was an entertaining breakthrough in film as it was mostly ab-libbed. It was good go rent it!

Worst film of the year - MI2. What a steaming pile of crap. Maybe if Cruise actually pulled his huge inflated ego-head out of his arse he'd realise that he can't act. After coming out of the movie I felt disappointed that Cruise didn't catch a bullet at the end. A big thumbs down.
