that the werewolf transformation in The Howling is much more impressive then the one in American Werewolf In London.

The effects used in The Howling looked much more convincing and natural. The way the muscles swelled and pulsated was amazing. The chest popping, the sound effects...all of it was fantastic.

The transformation in AWIL is good, but highly, highly overrated. Sure, Naughton conveys the pain perfectly, but the effects themselves didnt convince me nearly as much as the Howlings. I mean, all we see in AWIL is a hand growing, some hair and the only truly impressive bit is the face growing to complete wolf form. The shot of the body looks incredibly silly imo.

The Howling is far superior in this regard.

Anyone else agree?

I always liked The Howling transformation better. But I like the werewolves in The Howling more also. The Howlig had more F/X as well. The severed hand transforming was cool.

Really? That was quite the BOLD statement, Poop. Personally I love both The Howling and An American Werewolf In London the same, but I can honestly say that I love the werewolf transformation in AWIL was much superior. Don't get me wrong, both are remarkably well done and phenomenal (,much better than today's cgi crap,) but as far as transformation scenes AWIL is my jazz...more so than the Howling.

Really. I just dont think the AWIL transformation is all that impressive. You see much, much more happening in The Howling. The only thing you see in AWIL is a hand growing, and the face changing (Like I said, the most impressive part) and nothing much else. The transformation is edited in a way where we dont see much happening except some hair here and there

On a purely visual level the Howlings transformation is better by a long shot. The sound effects, the way everything in happening right in front of you. I just find the effects more impressive all around.

I... am going to have to agree. I just watched The Howling again recently and the transformation is beyond impressive and truly frightening. AWIL is fantastic as well just not as much; I love the bubbling effect and how you slowly see every part of Picardo's body change. Brrr just thinking about it gives me the creeps:eek:

See favorite movie:p

I agree, Poop. Although AWIL holds a place in my heart as it was the first werewolf movie I watched(I didn't see Wolfman until years after) I was blown away by The Howling. The transformations, the mood, and Dee Wallace....good times.

I can say I completely understand Poops opinion on this as I myself have trouble forming an opinion on which is superior, because they both have fantastic transformations and they both feature two of the best and most impressive transformation scenes I've seen put on screen.

The FX in The Howling was the only good thing about that boring and dull film.

AWIL kicks Howling's ass:cool:

Rob Botan(although influenced by him) is superior to Rick Baker.

And Dee Wallace is by far the most vastly underrated actress out there.

The Howling is the winner(plus we get a FULL bush shot) :D

I liked both. The AWIL transformation took place in full light. So it was a tough shoot to do in the first place. The Howling transformation was in semidark, so it was a bit easier to do more convincing. Both are classics, but I tend to lean more towards the AWIL.

I just hope people aren't thinking that because I like the transformation in The Howling better that I think that the movie itself is better. AWIL is certainly better as a whole, but I liked the transformation in The Howling better. (I think maybe Poop feels the same) So, don't string us up yet, guys..... Or am I going to have to take the razor out of my cheek San Quentin style.....

Well, As you know poop I am a "geezer-schmoe" that grew up during the 70's and 80's. So many special effects people were breaking new ground at that time and when I saw both the Howling & American Werewolf on the big screen, it was quite the experience for me.

Personally, I do miss low-tech effects from time to time and when I mean low tech I am referring to the days of latex and grue. It really sucks donkey balls when the majority of horror films TODAY rely on CGI. Computer effects really add nothing and take me out of the film all together. Despite my usual rant, I gotta' say my vote goes to---THE HOWLING! Joe Dante rules!:D

poop, looks like we'll be sharing a cell in the mental institution, because I completely agree with you.

That said, a small Howling-related rant: How in god's fucking name did Terry not see Eddie when she was going through that file cabinet in the office? It's like what--a 15x15 room, if that? A gigantic werewolf right fucking next to the file cabinet you're rifling through? Really?

*frantically motions to the left* File cabinet. *frantically motions two inches to the right* Werewolf. *motions back to the left* File cabinet. *motions back to the right* Werewolf.

I guess i throw my 2 cents in.... but i think everybody here has made great points..

in my opinion American Werewolf In London well always by my number 1 fav. werewolf movie ever hands down............
2nd howling
3rd Silver Bullet
that mostly likely will never change for the rest of my life....

i have never seen a movie mix humor and horror like AAWIL.
also a werewolf transformation to
BAD MOON RISING by Creedence Clearwater Revival come on........

that being said the Howling is a very underrated film by todays horror fans and the transformation is outstanding.. the opening scene in the porno shop is classic....
nothing to me says classic 80's horror like a movie that stars the great Dick Miller ---- ( he also in Gremlins 1 and 2 and Chopping Mall to name a few )

IMO the FX used in the transformation scene of The Howling are superior to that of AAWIL...

But...

I think that the scene in AAWIL, as a whole, is superior to the transformation scene in The Howling.

I also prefer the wolf in AAWIL.

But neither were as good as An American Werefolf in Paris. :D
