I am sorry for plaguing the Rant forum with my awful rants but I have one left up my sleeve.
Sell Alcohol at Theaters
Sure there are art house theaters that do this but I am talking about multiplexes people!
I dont think how much people realize that drinking beer during a movie, makes it so much more enjoyable. Screw all the crappy candy! I want a fuckin beer when I am watching a film damn it!
Now, I am not wanting to let them make smoking legal at movie theaters but I think its okay if beer is allowed to be sold there.
What could go wrong???

I personally think that this would be a bad idea. We already have screaming, drunken asses at rock concerts and sporting events; do we really need to have them at the movies?

Well I see what you are saying but just cause a person drinks a couple of beers, they wont turn into some out of control drunken asshole.
Also, concerts and sporting events are completely different than going to the movies. At concerts and sporting events you are encouraged to be loud while at the movies you keep to yourself.
Its just like at restaurants ya know?

A small business called Movie Tavern has a couple of locations nationally that do sell beer during movies. They have a bar in the lobby, a full menu and servers that tend to you before and during movies. Google it when you get a chance, it's a great concept

That's the problem I have here. People don't always follow the rules, especially when there's no set-limit to how many drinks they can buy. Granted, people making a scene would get thrown out of the theatre, but if that kind of scenario were to be a regular occurence, it would result in a clusterfuck of all sorts because the staff would have to deal with the drunkeness in some way or another, resulting in longer wait-times for tickets and concessions.

It's funny how you say that concerts and sporting events are completely different from going to the movies but then say two completely different things are the same.
I wouldn't say restaurants are the same because they're more formal than going to the theatres. Besides, we already have people who like to act stupid at the movies so adding alcohol in the mix is a bad idea. Of course there are exceptions, there's some theatres that serve alcohol but kind of double as a restaurant too. I think there was a rant about one of them before on here. Then there's theatres that encourage MST3K like behaviour sometimes, serving alcohol there seems fitting for that. I'm kind of against serving beer regularly though.

Beer is sold at a huge mutiplex near me. Costs like $5 and your limit is 2. Just makes you have to piss more during the movie.

This is probably the most reasonable approach - I should've re-worded my previous post; I'm OK with the idea of selling beer at the movies as long as there's a limit to how much you can buy.

Thanks for the heads up. I found a Movie Tavern in my state. Still, I wish beer sales at movie theaters wasnt so taboo though.
I mean, its not like I am asking for there to be a FULL bar where you can get Jager Bombs and shots of 151 or anything like that.
I would also be okay with a limit on how much beer you could purchase.
Theaters could make a killing off this.

There are many places to drink;
-diners/resturants
-taverns/pubs
-your own home
-night clubs
- baseball games
Rules could be put into place with multiplexes, but you know as well as I do not a lot of people follow these rules.

If I'm not mistaken, echo was being sarcastic with the restaurant comment - pointing out that they serve alcohol there, but hardly do you ever see people screaming and making a scene.
Here's the problem with serving alcohol in the theater, and I'm likened to believe it's the reason they don't... You have to be 18 to serve alcohol (at least in the states) and most people who work at the theaters are teenagers.
Now, I have no problem with drinking at the theaters, I don't see why it should be considered a certain time and place... Maybe if I'm seeing the Diving Bell or something, a drink's not in order, but how the hell can you compare that to Grindhouse or something of the sort.
I've always been lucky enough to live by a pub theater that serves dinner during the movie, beer, you sit down at a table... I often like to get a pitcher while checking out a movie at these places. When I go to a drive-in, I like to pick the most appropriate movie possible and pack up a cooler and whatever else I may be packing (and I'm not talking about a gat...) Sure, there's a time and a place for drinking, but lets not generalize that all movies aren't that time nor place.

Good point. I saw Grindhouse at a $3 Theater last year. We went in buzzed and we snuck in jello shots. We had an awesome time. I definitely wouldn't do the same for a film like There Will Be Blood, but Drag Me to Hell? Sure, why not. Now as for pot, that's a whole other story.

D'oh!
I seriously forgot about that and didnt think about that at all. Good point there Bubba.
In college, my friends and I snuck in beer all the time but it was sort of a hassel and I felt like an asshole doing it. Especially during the winter time, it was easy to sneak in Mickey's 40s in your coat.;)
Now, I am 26 and really dont feel like doing that anymore.:D

First time I went to the GFT - LA Confidential - and they sold alcohol before, during and after the screening was a revelation. The art-house crowd sit and drink a few schnappes, then go to the bar afterward to discuss the movie they have just watched. I love it.
Now, tonight I went to see Drag Me to Hell at the local muptiplex and there were a lot of young people, most of whom had partaken of a few stout ales. The kept talking, laughing, acting out, et cetera, so that I eventually turned around and told them I would end them if they did not shut up.
This is the problem with multiplexes: the films attract bigger, often younger audiences. Add beer to that mix and you've got trouble.
That said, this was the same cinema where I watched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and a group of women smuggled big bottles of cider in, then left after forty minutes when the brew was all gone.
A shithole full of shitheads.

I'm all for having the option, especially if you're with a really hot chick who wants to see a moronic movie and you need somethin' to help you put up with it.
But BubbaStrangelove is correct. LOTS of teenagers work at movie theaters and with the countless amounts of inane laws we have in place; I don't see it happening.

We're already annoyed with people at the theatre and alcohol isn't even a factor.
Combine annoyance at the theatre with annoyance at the bar and you get alot of people killed.
Not a good idea, or maybe a brilliant idea, I haven't decided yet.

The Postmaster General
05-28-2009, 07:43 PM
Just let it be said that not everyone drinks to get blasted.
By the logic of "can't you just wait" - let's just pull out the whole snack bar and refreshment stand, because surely people can wait to go to a restaurant after the movie.
No, and not everyone has this magic cache of time where they get to go over town, a different place for each thing they want to do... to the theater for a movie, the bar for a drink, then the restaurant for some food, then off to Armond White's front lawn to take a shit...

I have enough frustration with assholes disregarding rules and other viewers at the theaters.
I don't need fuel to the fire.
On another note, cheap theaters where it would be expected wouldn't bother me as much. For example at University Wisconsin Madison there was a theater that played $4 movies and served beer on tap. It also had tables lined up on the front rows, and some recliners in the theater. THAT'S fucking badass.
However, if I spent ten bucks on a movie and want to actually watch it, drunk people only make a less enjoyable viewing experience.
i would pee too much and miss the movie!
lol but anyways, yeah i can see some drunken douchebags coming in and hooting and hollering the whole time, but i think that really most people would be respectful for the most part.
and yes i would like a beer at the movies.
CyclicNightmare
05-29-2009, 01:28 AM
They should, but I feel like most places wouldn't bother to acquire the license. I dunno, maybe if they realize they can make more money off it, they will. A theatre I used to work at had a full bar on Friday and Saturday nights. I don't think it was that popular, drinks were really expensive.
The Postmaster General
05-29-2009, 01:51 AM
Cyclic says it well. Nice avatar change BTW, I just watched that today.
The fact is that the megaplex chain theaters are not going to have it not only because they wouldn't want to cater to the laws, as it would cut off their profit by forcing them to hire older workers. But something I don't that that's been mentioned, I'm pretty sure that they would not be able to allow people under 18 into the theater. I might be mistaken, but with some exceptions (stadiums, ballparks, restaurants, venues...) it is not legal to serve alcohol in places allowing entrance to people under 18. I know it's that way with bars and clubs, and I would think theaters would be similar since it would have the same stealth factor where an adult could buy a kid a drink.
So pretty much the way it is now is probably the best way it's going to be both for those of us who want to drink and those of you who want to noise level turned down. Only smaller theaters with fewer screens, mostly novelty or campus type theaters are going to sell the drinks, and the masses aren't. Those theaters don't care who gets in, and that's why all these noise "violations" and other nonsense happens. If you were out of line on a college campus or in a art house theater, you'd probably hear about it from the patrons/staff more quickly because they are going to have customers no matter what because of the novelty factor.
This may just be the first rant that's shown me the world is possibly a more perfect place than I've ever let on.

It's one thing to put 50 some odd people in a theater and hope that everyone behaves themselves.
It's "a whole nother" thing to allow them to get drunk and pray that someone doesn't urinate on someone else from the top row.
When I look in my cookbook for "recipes for trouble", most of the dishes call for alcohol.

People who are going to see a movie drunk are going to anyway. They may drink beforehand or bring a flask or an "outside drink" in their bag or coat. So since the drinks are going to be exorbitant in price; I don't think it really matters if they serve them(save for the age factor).

I'd be okay with this if it wasn't for the fact that I know the theaters would just reek of the disgusting smell of alcohol and that would definitely be enough to keep me from the theaters for the rest of my life. It's bad enough when pricks decide to light up a cigarette or weed inside the theater, the last thing I need is another smell on top of those that makes me want to gag.

If they did start selling alcohol in theaters, they may have it separated like a restaurant. Drinking Area, Smoking Area, "Pure" or "Clean" Area. I'd be ok with it then. Plus the theater would be bigger. Which is always a plus.

Most people tend to have their bladder under control for the duration of a feature film. Alcohol just fucks that equation.
I don't drink as often as I once did, and when I'm not drinking, the smell of booze in close, warm quarters is just nauseating.

Beer hits people differently than others, while you may have a few members of the audiences sleeping and snoring loudly, a couple angry drunks would ruin the entire movie going experience for me.

Megaplexes aren't going to sell beers because they aren't going to cater to an adult-only crowd.
The only chain I've seen sell beer and wine is a Muvico in Ybor City. You have to be 18 to get into the section of the theater that sells beer, and I mean as far as movie theaters, it's like high level security shit.
This has been pretty well laid out way early in the thread. The "drunks = obnoxious" thing is getting played out to the point that we're now using what happens at NASCAR as examples of common behavior.
It was an extra 5 bucks to get into that theater that served, and I usually would pay the money even without the desire to drink, and it wasn't because people under 18 are less annoying than people who drink.

People at Nascar events drink from sun up till sun down. They tailgate all day and get fucked up (similar to football games).
Like Bubba and others have mentioned, big movie theaters/megaplexes most likely wont ever sell beer because they usually cater to families or the younger crowd.

Is Orlando the only town with AMC’s (City Walk and I think Downtown Disney as well) that serve beer and wine? Regal Cinemas at Point Orlando is working on getting their license and should be serving in time for the holidays. My personal choice though is the Aloma Cinema Grill, but regardless; a good o’l flask works just fine.

Would require a license and enough money to pay for the alcohol. But it could create new revenue. And maybe a few more DUIs. Biggest problem would be being responsible with regard to who drinks, how much, how to card people, etc.
And if they only bought cheap beer I'd be rather disappointed. But I don't usually drink anything at the theater, or else I'l end up needing a bathroom run. And I DON'T leave the theater until credits roll.

In Austin we have a few The Alamo Draft House where you go in and sit and a server comes out and takes your order. They serve beer, wine and food. Like popcorn, pizza, nacho and other snacks. You never go to a concision stand the server checks on you through out the movie. I usually go to this one and there has never been a problem with any overdrinking. Yeah, 2 and a half hours isn't really enough time to get blotto unless you are playing drinking games or something. It's not like the drive-in where you can go crazy and get blasted, maybe taking out a small metal post with a speaker dangling at the top, scuffing your MADD bumper sticker.

There is a theater where I live that sells beer and wine. It's a Landmark Theater, which I believe is a chain - a small chain, but a chain nonetheless. If they do it here, they probably do it at their other movie theaters around the country.

Blech. I'd prefer that not to happen. Do we really need another reason for people to act like idiots at the theater?

If they sell beer the smallest size is going to be like a litre and it will cost 18 dollars.
I'd rather not have to get up to pee several times during the movie, anyway.

Honestly, I don't get the "we don't need more reasons for people to act like assholes cause they're drunk" excuse. A movie on average is what, an hour and a half long? Which is hardly any time to get drunk unless you're constantly pounding beers. A beer at a movie theater is probably going to run you at least $5. Do you really think people are going to be buying enough beer to get drunk at a movie? This would require them getting out of their seats multiple times to get said beer, not to mention the money they would waste. Most people who want to see movies drunk already get drunk beforehand and then go to the movie. I don't think people are suddenly going to decide "holy shit, I can buy beer at the movie, I'm gonna get wasted there!" It just really doesn't make much sense. I seriously, SERIOUSLY doubt, that drunk people as a direct result from the theater selling booze, is going to be a problem if theaters start doing this. Now I will concede that there will be exceptions to this, and there may be one or two assholes that do this, but it's not going to be a major problem.

The cinema I go to has a bar service but you are only allowed to drink during the film if you are in the VIP section upstairs. The VIP section is a seperate room with a big window to the normal screen, individual chairs that you can adjust the sound on. They are pretty good. It also offers a waiter/waitress service so you don't have to miss any of the movie, you just call them with a button.
The problem with this bar is that you can go to drink before you see the film and they are really lazy with ID checks so you get a huge group of complete wankers in the screen and this is the reason I very seldom go to the cinema anymore. If I do go I try to wait until a film has been out for a few weeks so that the attendance has dwindled a bit.
All in all, bars at the cinema - fucking awful idea

I don't drink beer. It tastes like <insert well known silly line here> warm camel piss.
How do I know what warm camel piss tastes like? I don't. Thank God. But I reckon beer comes very close.

Why sell alcohol at the movies? Whatever happened to the good old days of sneaking in a few bottles of airline tequila and getting brain from a busted hooker in the back row of the theater?

I'm not sure that's a good idea.
There are alot of people out there that are like me: They drink for the sole purpose of getting drunk.
And the only time that I find getting drunk to be a good thing, is when I'm hanging around this site.
Whenever my name pops up that I'm online, chances are about 100% that I'm totally plastered.
Now, don't get me wrong,
that's not a put down to this site or it's members or anything.
It's just that...well....
I'm just not built with the advanced type of coping mechanism that is required to deal with most of you guys.

I don't anymore. I know I said earlier in another topic that I never drank beer, but that's not true. I used to drink beer all of the time. To the point of getting sick.
And even warm beer. Never used to keep it in the fridge. We'd have them all in a cooler, but I used to take forever to drink my beer, so it got warm. Yuk. Just the thought of it makes me want to throw up.

My area just had a new theater (Frank Theaters) built, with a martini bar and all. Within 5 minutes of walking distance. :)

Its a shame that big cinema multiplexes dont offer beer as an option but i can't think of anything worse than obnoxious drunk people spoiling a movie for me. That said in the Independants in Uk , I go to two they serve like beer ,spirits and wine and that and let you bring them into screenings so im content. To be honest with most of mainstream releases i get dragged to id rather get drunk and fall asleep.

The people that buy the beer at the theaters should be careful on their behavior. No person at a movie theater wants to hear a drunk obnoxious person fucking screaming at the movie. Movies aren't sports events or rock concerts. Wine and other alcohol products should be in movie theaters if beer in.

I'd be more concerned (personally as a heavy drinker) that the night could turn into a $50-60 event just to see a movie. I wouldn't be surprised that if big multiplexes started serving beer, we'd be looking at $6.00+ for a draft, like a sporting events. Granted higher prices definitely keep people, generally, from getting plastered in a family/public place but really it's just for the $$$.

Don't know if this has been posted but the AMC in Orlando(the one in CityWalk) sells beer. And I believe the theaters in Las Vegas sell beer there too, but I could be wrong on that.

Alright, well you can walk into a movie theater and buy a beer. And, I don't mean just like a paper cup, I'm talking about a glass of beer.

The Warren Theatres chain in Kansas and Oklahoma has grand auditoriums with balconies. For the balcony, it's 21 and up and you pay extra but you get full bar and food service throughout the film. They also have a bar in the second floor lobby where you could get a drink before or after the film if you're not sitting in the balcony, but you can't take it out of the bar area.
www.warrentheatres.com
I've never done the balcony myself, but have sat in the theatre below many times and have never heard any "screaming, drunken asses". Heard a glass fall once and that's it.
