He's not entirely responsible and I know people enjoyed it, but CHUD has an article out explaining everything that went wrong with the production. The article makes it look like Bale had a good hand in ruining the original version of Salvation, the other major factor being the leaked ending.

To sum up what the article says, the original script intended for John Connor to have only 3 or so minutes of screentime. Bale was approached to play Marcus be he wanted to play Connor instead which resulted in a complete overhaul of the script that beefed up his role considerably. These rewrites were happening on set also and ended up making Reese's character get cut down significantly. If you know the original ending, you can see why it impacted things. You can read the full summary at the link below, but be aware that there are HUGE SPOILERS for Salvation. I briefly summed it up here for people who don't want to know the full details in case they still want to see it.

From the sounds of it this movie was screwed up from the beginning. The original script sounds bad, but rewriting everything on the spot to beef up Bale's role makes almost everyone in charge of the production look bad. If it ends up failing at the box office badly then this will probably be seen as a disaster for WB.

I honestly don't like the original script either so it was ruined for me either way. The original script might actually have been worse.

Bale has serious pull after Dark Knight, so he was going to have the bigger part no matter what, because Sam Worthington is frankly...a nobody.

I also like how some websites are blaming each aspect of the production just because T4 underwhelmed. I think that people need to quit pointing fingers.

The script was one of many problems. Whether it was rewritten or not, it would have still been mediocre.

However, that scene where the Harvester is right now sounds better than what was filmed.

I don't think he ruined it because he wanted it to be John Connor. Connor has been the focus of the last two movies and changing that focus might've been a bit odd. Personally, I didn't think the movie was that bad.

Yeah, I agree with pretty much what you have said. I saw the movie tonight, and it was..pretty good, and way better than I was expecting. Sam Worthington owned.
