View Full Version : Clint Eastwood has to stop changing the names of his movies

I just had to post about this shit once I realized just what was going on.
I have been seeing the name "Invictus" as an upcoming Clint Eastwood project all over the place recently, as it just got a release date and all sorts of other things. I thought "well, Eastwood is just pulling another double-whammy, like he did these past few years, releasing two movies in the same year, often very close to one another", as I already have long-known about his upcoming Nelson Mandela bio-pic, "The Human Factor." And then, on the main JoBlo site, I suddenly see that "Invictus" IS "The Human Factor"! But why the FUCK did they change the name?! "The Human Factor" was a great title; it had a ring to it, and it also sounded noble and important and intriguing. But now, they change it to fucking "INVICTUS", which to me sounds like the name of a spell from Harry Potter.
And this isn't the first time; just 3 years ago, Eastwood's Japanese-side Iwo Jima movie had one of the best movie titles I had ever heard: "Red Sun, Black Sand". I mean, fuck me if that isn't one of the coolest and most bad-ass movie titles ever. And then, like a few months before release, the name changes to the decidedly less exciting "Letters from Iwo Jima". So sure, by now we're all used to the name, but I still can't get over just how much cooler "Red Sun, Black Sand" was.
So in short: Eastwood, please change the name of your movie back to "The Human Factor", because "Invictus" sounds... well, stupid, and I don't care how relevant it is to the subject matter, it still just SOUNDS bad.

Yeah "Red Sun, Black Sand" sounds badass as hell. I really wish he would of stuck to his guns with that one.
Invictus does sound like some sort of new STD or something.
David Fincher almost changed the title of Zodiac to The Chronicles (I believe). Whew, that was a close one.

This might be a stupid question, but what exactly does Invictus mean? I don't recall hearing that word before.

It's Latin for "invincible."
They took it from a poem by William Earnest Henley, apparently because it was a source of inspiration for Mandela when he was in prison, helping both him and his fellow prisoners.
http://www.rd-india.com/newsite/other/facetoface_oct07.asp
RD: When you were in prison all those long years on Robben Island and elsewhere, was there something that came back to you, something you had either in your mind, a message or passage from a book, a song, something that helped sustain you and keep up your spirits?
Mandela: There was a poem by an English poet, W.E. Henley, called “Invictus.” The last lines go:
It matters not how straight the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
In this context, I actually like the new title. The Human Factor got me tangled with that lousy movie made from the Philip Roth novel...The Human Stain.

Invictus does sound like a Harry Potter spell :D But, it's still a pretty good title. I prefer it than The Human Factor, which sounds like reality tv. The title should simply be Springboks. Though the title is the least of the films worries. Damon playing the 6' 3 1/2" Francois Pienaar is laughable.

Hey hey, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is an amazing movie title; mysterious, but coherent, and it sounds great and has a really good ring to it besides being really original and unique (and not to mention the literary reference and tie-in to the film itself, in which the poem is mentioned and quoted multiple times). But Invictus JUST sounds mysterious, and I don't think anybody really understands what the fuck it means unless they look it up. Which most people won't do. The Human Factor, on the other hand, is also pretty straightforward and also has a good ring to it.

Yeah, but what does that really mean coming from someone with 28,082 posts? I mean what kind of number is that? Really? It's such a strange and mysterious number and not in a good way just look at it. Come to me when you have an awesome number like 31,095, then maybe I'll take you seriously.

Well . . . I don't think I've ever decided to watch a movie based on the title. Red Sun, Black Sand is a cool movie title, but Letters from Iwo Jima did have a hell of a lot more to do with the actual movie.
Maybe we'll learn what "Invictus" means when we watch the movie.

This got me think about what it might be like if studio execs told Clint he couldn't change the title.
"Sorry Clint, it just doesn't have the same ring as THE HUMAN FACTOR."

This thread is hilarious. :p And personally, I don't give a damn about the titles as long as the movie is good. Unless we are talking about a title like THE Final Destination. Good God!

I'm of two minds on this. I wasn't keen on the old title (The Human Factor) b/c it didn't connect well with the story and sounded more like a sci-fi title.
I'm not sure about Invictus either, as it sounds like some kind of Roman epic. However, in the context of the poem Lazy Boy mentioned, it makes more sense.
Personally, I think they should have gone with the title of the book: Playing the Enemy
Still, I don't think it matters in the long run. I'm still going to see the film.

I think "Black Sun, Red Sand" sounds even cooler than all the titles mentioned combined.

Before Ford offered to provide sponsorship for the movie, the original title of Gran Torino was Bitchin' Camero.
