I was extremely disappointed, and not a little angry, last night when listening to the European Election results to find that the BNP - a racist, far right organisation - had managed an electoral breakthrough.

Okay it is only two seats, and the European parliment wields little real power, and it didn't increase its actual number of votes a great deal, meaning that we can put these victories down to a catastrophic turnout of around 33%, even so, it gives these racists (whose party grew out of the National Front, whose leader has been convicted of inciting racial hatred, praised the SS and called the Holocaust the Holohoax) the illusion of respectability.

My feeling is that the only positive that will come out of this is if we use that illusion of respectability to really engage the BNP, to expose their 'patriotism' for the dressed up neo-fascism that it is. Lets have the Leader Nick Griffin included in major debating programs like Any Questions and Question Time, lets have them regularly interviewed on the news. Just minutes after his election their first MEP was showing himself for the hateful shit he is in a radio interview, if we make these people stand up say what they believe people will, largely, stop engaging with it.

So, any other thoughts on this 'breakthrough' for the BNP?

I'm aware the BNP has its roots planted in racism, fascism, and everything that goes with that. However, political parties change. Is there any evidence that Nick Griffin and the current BNP are racists and fascists, and not simply opposed to illegal immigration and asylum seekers?

I enjoyed Nick Griffin's Richard Nixon impression -- two handed peace signs -- but I wouldn't vote for him, simply because of the BNP's lack of economic credibility. But that's also a reason to not vote Labour, or at least to not vote Alan Greenspan's dimwitted "apprentice" -- Gordon Brown.

Tories or UKIP for me.

Well I voted Lib Dem this year...and whilst I'm saddened by this news, it certainly didn't come as a surprise.
