View Full Version : I dislike AC/DC

The title says it all. I find AC/DC to be vastly overrated. They're lyrics are crap, and their sound is...like generic 70's/80's rock, the type that kids of our age listen to just because they think it's "cool." I think of AC/DC as "wasted talent" in their prime, becuase they were good at what they did, but they put it to no good use. Their songs could have never been written and the world would have been the same place, no? I guess that's my main-beef with them, they're lyrics are terrible. Look at TNT, or Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, and tell me that the writer of those songs had any talent. (I'll leave Big Balls off the hook because it was obviously tongue-in-cheek.) And now I don't even consider them to be "wasted talent," they're just "talentless." My brother has their new cd, Black Ice and my God is it unbearable!! This cd is so bad it makes me want to hurt small things!!
Anybody else agree with me, or am I alone on this one.

I think AC/DC are good musicians. Within the scope of the 70s/80s hard rock scene, their sound was really unique. However, their lyrics are limited and mediocre and, as far as I can tell, they are pretty talentless now.

How are their lyrics crap? Do you have no sense of humour, or are you simply ignorant to their facetiously-macho lyrical style? And how in hell is their sound generic when they were one of the FIRST big Metal acts to emerge AFTER the decline of 60's/Early 70's Metal, and BEFORE the New British Heavy Metal movement back in the late 70's? Who's sound did they rip off in order to merit theirs as generic?
Also, your baseless claims about how "the world would be the same" without them is complete and utter garbage as there are a plethora of artists who cite AC/DC as one of their chief musical influences. Meaning, if they didn't exist, chances are plenty of music we know of wouldn't either...
And you're just completely ignorant about the band if you genuinely believe they're 'talentless'. That's honestly the biggest load of bullshit I've heard in a while, bro.. haha.. (then again, I haven't heard their new album)
All I can say is, if you don't like them that's you're problem... but going as far as calling them overrated, well, you're going to have to provide thorough examples instead of, you know, half-assed arguments and false assumptions.

oi oi oi oi oi oi oi oi oi oi oi oi oi oi oi
See me ride out of the sunset
On your colored TV screen
Out for all that I can get
If you know what I mean
Women to the left of me
And women to the right
Ain't got no gun
Ain't got no knife
Don't you start no fight
(Chorus)
Cos I'm
T.N.T.
I'm Dynamite
T.N.T.
And I'll win the fight
T.N.T.
I'm a power-load
T.N.T.
Watch me Explode
I'm dirty, mean and mighty unclean
I'm a Wanted man
Public Enemy Number One
Understand
So lock up your daughter
And lock up your wife
Lock up your back door
And run for your life
The man is back in town
Don't you mess around
(Chorus)
(Guitar Solo)
T.N.T. oi oi oi
T.N.T. oi oi oi
T.N.T. oi oi oi
T.N.T. oi oi oi
T.N.T.
I'm Dynamite (oi oi oi)
T.N.T.
And I'll win the fight (oi oi oi)
T.N.T.
I'm a power-load (oi oi oi)
T.N.T.
Watch me explode
Yeah, I call that crap lyrics.
And you should listen to their new cd, that's what I was refering to when I said they were talentless.

They're a pretty fun band. Of course they're lyrics are not that great I didn't know there was an argument that they were great lyricists.
Also, your argument that the world would have been the same place without them is entirely moot. You could say that about about a lot of fun rock bands.

Along with Nickelback they are one of the two worst bands that have ever existed.

Yes, Ginger, your distain for this band is well-grounded - and something that I share with you. I consider AC/DC to be one of the worst successful acts in all of recorded history. They have literally, I mean fucking literally, recorded the same single about 25 times. Every song is the same. Same kind of chord progression, same kind of lyrical stlye, same kind of lyrical content, same shitty-ass drum beat (their drummer, whoever the fuck he is, isn't worthy to lick Dennis Chambers' sweaty undercarriage), and just overall same monotonous, boring, "rock & roll" bullshit. And what really pisses me off is that they took such a long time off, and came back with a new record, and it's the EXACT SAME SHIT! You would expect a bunch of old fuckers to, I dunno, maybe mature or start seeing a more three-dimensional kind of music, but no... That's giving these talentless fucks too much credit. And please, before somebody quotes this whole argument and says at the bottom - "Well, Angus Young is a badass!" - My reply is no. No he isn't. Is he fast? Yes. Badass? No... Far from it.

Fair enough, Chinton. ;)
Thanks for the back-up, JohnG. I like Nickelback's older stuff, but the last year has gone way downhill for them. Somethin in Your Mouth is probably the worst song of the year.

I used to suck on the proverbial cock of AC/DC during my early high school years - there was even a point where I thought they were literally the greatest thing since sliced bread. Then I discovered new music and stopped listening to them; when I did, I came to realize that AC/DC was a band with less variation than Billy Crystal's stand-up comedy act. Haven't listened to them since.

As AC/DC have perfectly demonstrated, almost every band that falls under the "classic rock" banner proves to be the ultimate exception to this rule - The Rolling Stones, who appear to be on the verge of dying, now crap out singles that make 'em sound like a horrible Stones cover band, and 65-year-old Mick Jagger is still singing songs about porking 18-year-olds. But, as Exile on Main St. demonstrated, they definitely reached the "third dimension" that most rockers strive to get to.

AC/DC's good, simple fun, and seeing them live once in your life should be rewarding.
But yes, they really shouldn't be anyone's favorite band, and nobody needs more than two of their albums.

If you piled up all of AC/DC's songs and put them together, it still wouldn't equal half of even a song like "Under My Thumb", or something. Even though the Stones still stick to their same guns, it is a little different, considering they, at one point in time, did put out good music. Unlike the other band we're talking about in this thread...

One of my favorite bands. Enough said.
It's BS about all their songs sounding the same. Bon Scott's era sounds COMPLETELY different then Brian Johnson's. When Scott fronted the band they had and quasi punk feel to them and then when Johnson took over they embraced the more generic rock/metal arena sound.
Scotts era is definitely the best. They had sarcastic sense of dark humor running through their lyrics that I love.
AC/DC being compared to Nickleback is a fucking sin against humanity.

One of my favorite bands as well. Their lyrics are all the same: women, partying, drinking, rock and roll, and I agree, they're not deep or meaningful at all, but that's not the point of their music.
To me, it's just fun, no-frills rock n' roll. Love their new album, and I can't help but start banging my head whenever I hear Highway to Hell, even if I've listened to it over 50 times.

There's just... to me, anyway... so much better shit out there. Life's too fucking short to have to listen to Hell's Bells or Thunderstruck 100 times. There's too much great music out there that none of us have even discovered yet. It's not about music being deep or spiritually enlightening, it's about it actually being about something. I'd bet my left nut that Brian Johnson's never spent more than eight minutes writing a song. And I'd bet my right nut that Angus Young has never spent more than 4 minutes writing out music for a song. It's just bubblegum bullshit wrapped up in a "hard rock" package. But really, deep down, it's nothing. Just the bullshit that a bunch of drunk Australian guys came up with. There's more out there gentlemen. Much, much, much more...

I'm not a fan, but I don't terribly dislike them. They are very over played on rock radio.
I do like some songs, and even own The Razor's Edge.
Thunderstruck is a kick ass song.
But for the most part, yeah, they're pretty much worn out. Been playing the same stuff for thirty years or more.

Why change when they sell out 60,000 seat venues in two minutes?
Their formula works and plenty of people obviously still like them.
I will say the last two decades or since hasn't been that productive however they have some classic songs from the 70's and very early eighties. Highway to Hell, Hells Bells, Let There Be Rock to name a few.

I never got heavily into them. They've got a few very listenable songs; but ultimately most of their songs sound exactly the same. Seeing them live must be like one long song. Same chords, boring basslines, and repetitive time signatures. But hey, people love that stuff.

I fucking LOATHE AC/DC.
Simple, boring, bullshit party rock.
I'd say, my most hated band of all time. While I fucking HATE Led Zeppelin, that's mostly because of Robert "Most Overrated Singer Ever" Plant. At least musically, LZ are solid. But AC/DC... boring, blues based, "let's get a keg and date rape cheerleaders" tripe.
If you like them, that's great. Trust me, there are bands I love, that most, if not all AC/DC fans would hate. That's okay too. But what I truly hate, is when people go off on you for not liking them, or more so, Angus Young.
I'm a musician... guitarist by trade... and there are 3 people (aka guitarists), that are just assumed you like, because you play guitar. Jimi, Jimmy and Angus. Why, I don't know? Jimi was innovative, but sloppy and boring. Jimmy wrote some good riffs, but again, sloppy and boring. Angus... just like the Jims, blues based, sloppy and boring (sloppy live I must add). When someone hears, as a guitarist, that I not only dislike those 3, but actually hate them, it's like I raped a kitten. Looks of shock and distain. Get over it, I don't like blues based players... okay?
That said... AC/DC bore me to death.

There is all the difference in the world between the Bon Scott version of this band and the Brian Johnson one. They were a lot of edgy, nervy, tongue in cheek, balls out fun with Bon. They're a perfunctory pile of crap with Johnson. They should have packed it in a few months after Bon died, because he took everything fun about them with him.

Never compared Angus to the Jims. He does get lumped in with them in some circles. "Oh, you play guitar? So you dig Page, Hendrix and Angus eh?" Uhm... no. I can appreciate Hendrix, but that's where it ends. I don't have a passion for the blues. And yes, Hendrix was sloppy live. I know some will say, "Oh, but he was wasted on stage." NOT an excuse. If anything, that's a slap in the face to anyone in attendance... then again, they were probably all wasted too. I liked LZ when I was a kid, but when I saw them live, I realized just how horrible they were as a live band, and it really disappointed me. After that, I could just never respect them anymore. Then as I grew older, I just grew more and more against them. Same with AC/DC. Up until I was about 13 or so, I dug them for the mindless rock they are. But I just grew more and more away from them, and it's gotten more distant ever since, to the point of "God... I hate this band!".
Yea, I get why people dig this band, but I just don't.

I'm a musician... guitarist by trade... and there are 3 people (aka guitarists), that are just assumed you like, because you play guitar. Jimi, Jimmy and Angus.
I've never heard Angus cited as part of a Holy Trinity. I've heard Dimebag Darrell cited more than Angus. Hell, I've heard Hetfield cited more than Angus. Even Clapton. I've heard Ted Nugget cited more. Shit, one better, I've heard Tommy Shaw's name more.
Not to say Angus doesn't get his fair share of praise. I remember circa 92'-93' he got a big spread in Guitar World, and I remember it being kind of funny at the time. I've never head them cited as technically impressive by musicians though. Never. Well, maybe but not that I remember, so it was probably very rarely. Intros like Thunderstruck are maybe intermediate, if that, and the rhythm section is just there.
That said, I think a lot of their appeal is just their chutzpah. I've never called myself a fan, and their being known for all their songs sounding the same has been a staple in their career for as long as I can remember hearing about them. I like them, not in a way that I even knew they had a new album.
There's a lot of fanatics about them, and that's the only reason I can see starting this thread. I grew up with this one kid who was insane for them, I mean, I swear to god when Beavis and Butthead first aired, I was 99% sure that Mike Judge knew this kid and the shirt was a knowing wink. Of course now I just know that Mike Judge is a cultural commentator genius.

This is one of the funniest threads I've read in quite some time. :D I'm not a big fan of the band, but I guess I understand the appeal they have for a lot of people. Especially with all the sexual lyrics. And with that said, I wouldn't say they DON'T stand for anything. Just because they don't stand for something that's as deep as you'd like or something the same as other bands doesn't mean the music is all for nothing. It's good time music. If I were to imagine myself seeing AC/DC live, I'd just see myself drinking the whole time and letting loose. Not that I would personally pay to see them, of course.
