Can't say it looks like the greatest, but it doesn't look disagreeable, either. It's also the first film in a while to have a sneak preview (this Saturday). What was the last one? Bolt?

Sandra Bullock has 2 upcoming romantic comedies and between this and All About Steve, this looks to be the better one. Not to say that it looks great, but it doesn't look too bad and it at least certainly doesn't look as bad as All About Steve.

TWO. VERY. LAZY. ACTORS.

Bullock will never reach her potential apex now. Reynolds better watch he does not become the next Hugh Grant.

He also better hope that Deadpool rescues him from Matthew McConaughey-stylee purgatory.

I might have to see this with a friend on her birthday. :(

Oh, yeah this does look better than All About Steve. Her character is basically stalking the guy in the movie and it's supposed to be a cute romantic comedy.

I haven't been too impressed with Ryan Reynolds since Amityville horror, which he was great in.

The only time Sandra Bullock has impressed me was Murder by Numbers but I think that was mostly because she was going toe to toe with Ryan Gosling.

Definitely going to pass on this one.

The Nines was pretty good but I still don't think I understand that movie.

Definitely, Maybe wasn't bad either.

And I don't know when it comes out, but I HIGHLY recommend the upcoming movie Fireflies in the Garden when it's eventually released. A terrific movie and Reynold's is excellent in it.

Actually, The Proposal is receiving good reviews from top publications like The Hollywood Reporter and Variety. A lot of the male critics are giving it thumbs up and calling it funny. There has been positive word-of-mouth from the sneak peeks held over the weekend. It's more comedy than romance.

I just saw it with my girlfriend. All the funny jokes (if you consider them funny) were in the trailer. It's actually a 'serious' romantic movie.
Ryan Reynolds looked bored all the time like he didn't want to be in this movie. Or maybe that was his character I don't know. Sandra Bullock still looks hot. I didn't care much about the movie, even my girlfriend thought is was kinda boring. The only thing that was actually funny were all the scenes with that mexican guy.

A pleasant surprise. Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock play their parts perfectly, have great comic timing and great chemistry too. I was actually surprised by how funny the movie. I think that's a problem with a lot of romantic comedies. They have a lot of the romantic part but usually skimp on the comedy part. Not this movie. There were some scenes that were hilarious. Betty White steals nearly every scene she is in. She's great. But the real reason to see this is for Reynolds and Bullock and both are in top form.

I was completely sucked in by the "high concept". Two professionals totally dedicated to their work and advancement of their careers, now have to fake a real love relationship. I liked that he was secretly envious of her "take no prisoners" approach to work because his personal life was so frought with turmoil--he literally moved to the other side of the country to chase his dreams, whereas when she is sercetly envious of his family life. I was a bit surprised that Bullock was doing semi-nude scenes.

Reynolds was his sarcastic self, "congratulations, I'm a hundred."

They had chemistry together when they were at odds, but then it got to the romantic part and I did'nt buy it for a second. I thought Malin Akerman and Reynold's had more believability. Some unexpected funny parts like Bullock dancing in the forest. In the end, it did what it was suppose to do, typical romantic comedy.

The Proposal aims to mix a fish out of water tale with romantic comedy. Its a concotion that goes down smoothly for the most part.Sandra Bullock is Margaret Tate a boss on the same level of The Devil Wears Prada's Miranda Priestly. She's so cold and uptight even her pony tail looks uptight.Ryan Reynolds is Andrew Paxton her executive assistance,he dislikes her,but puts up with her,in the hopes she will publish his book one day.
Tate dismisses updating her visa(she's from Canada)and her boss informs her she will be deported,so she lies and states she and Paxton are in love and will soon marry..All of this occurs on the same weekend of Paxton's Grandma Annie's(Betty White) 90'th birthday celebration in ....Alaska...Immigration doesnt believe a word of it so its off to Alaska to prove their uhmm ...love
The banter between Reynolds and Bullock is very funny.Bullock looks amazing in and out of her business suit and high heels.Reynolds can make me laugh by just looking hopelessly into the camera.Betty White steals every scene she's in.Oscar Nuņez as the townie Ramone is hilarious.
The film comes to a screeching halt when it takes a few serious turns that i dont think were really needed.
The Proposal is a very enjoyable date movie, just dont go in expecting laughs every 2 seconds and you will have a good time.

Ryan Reynolds finally becomes a mainstream star in this cute and charming romcom that also brings Sandra back to the limelight. The comedy worked, the romance less so, but some over-the-top silliness stops it short of true quality. Oscar Nunez is great, but Betty White steals the film. Nothing original here, but a light matinee diversion from the giant robots and upcoming gangsters and wizards.

Forgettable, enjoyable fluff that could've been a romcom classic with a few more rewrites.

It's become predictable to see Betty White as the granny with the dirty mind, so she certainly didn't feel like a welcome addition. This is the same, tired, old rom com, focusing on wildly eccentric, exotic Latino side characters for comic foil, and a race to the airport! Well, airfield, in this case...Reynolds and Bullock have enough chemistry to make it seem like the witter is banty. Case in point, the two have to come up with a story about their engagement, tell it to the family, while in the meantime bicker with each other and offer subtle putdowns.

Not the worst of its kind, just not enough beyond seeing Bullock shine in a good comedic performance -- never mind that it seems kinda antifeminist to force an independent working woman into marriage, but the movie goes a long way to break her down. Oh, and we get the requisite backstory to explain why she's such a bitch. It felt skimpy, just as much as the reason Reynolds would even fall for her in the first place. I hate interludes where people set aside their problems to a good old fashioned hip-hop song. Guess what, that happens here.

Yes I saw this, got dragged to it by the wife. The ole tit for tat I saw your movie now come see my visual harlequin romance with me. Sometimes I find myself lucky and the movie is actually good, other times I have to grin and bear it.

This one is sort of in between. It is unoriginal, follows all the classic romance formulas but at least it was watchable.

One of the biggest detractors for me was it seems Ryan is too young for Sandra, but hey go Sandra.

Was surprised to see her almost nude scene, but I guess they had to have an excuse to get Ryan naked as well for the ladies.

There are no surprises in the flick if you have seen ANY other romance ever made. But the Alaskan scenery and the puppy make up for some of the blandness.

If you are looking for a distraction go check it out, or if you are looking to score some points with your gal.

Out.....................

It takes a lot for a romantic comedy to work. Rarely is it original, often following a predictably generic formula. Rarely is it appealing to a universal audience, playing out as either a chick flick or a bromance. However, there is the very rare and pleasant surprise that comes along every so often. A film that refuses to fit into the boring mold it was offered and decides to fit into another, more interesting mold. “The Proposal” is the latest of these rare gems, even though it still has a few rough spots that keep it from shining as bright as it could have.

Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds) is a man with a passion for writing. He dreams of becoming editor, but is stuck at being assistant to one of the head editors of his company, Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock). Faced with being deported to Canada, Magaret bribes Andrew to get her way. He can marry her and get the editor’s position, or he can refuse and lose his job. He agrees, taking her to meet his family in Alaska.
The entire premise of the plot is admittedly far-fetched, but none of the characters seem to mind. Andrews agrees almost too eagerly to marrying his boss, and Margaret herself is certain that she won’t fall in love with someone she plans to divorce soon anyway.

“The Proposal” follows a very old and well-used formula that we’ve seen as far back as “Bringing Up Baby:” two people that hate each other need to rely on each other to make it through something and end up falling in love. There are other elements to the story that we’ve seen before too, giving the film a stale taste of predictability. Andrew has a wonderful family, but he has problems with his father. Margaret is a loner without any family, afraid to have it otherwise.

Some things just seem out of place and unnecessary, the most notable of which is a scene with an “exotic dancer.” This scene is played out too long and (with the combination of other moments in the film) solidifies the film’s PG-13 rating. And hearing Betty White talking about being “knocked up” makes me die a little inside.

The work both behind and in front of the camera is what makes all this work, though. Ryan Reynolds redeems his performance as Wade Wilson in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and has a wonderful knack for inducing laughter with simple facial expressions. He doesn’t usually say much, but you can tell what he’s thinking just by looking at his face. His use of sarcasm is spot-on and stays that way the entire length of the movie. Sandra Bullock has more screen time than her co-actor, but she still holds a powerful presence on the screen. She excellently portrays a wide range of emotion throughout the film, knowing just the right chord to strike without going overboard. The supporting cast includes Betty White as Andrew’s ninety-year-old grandmother and Craig T. Nelson as his strict father.

Anne Fletcher’s direction keeps a good pace and milks all the humor from every joke, but she doesn’t spend enough time on Andrew and his emotions. We get plenty of Sandra Bullock, so much so that it seems that Ryan Reynolds is merely there to just move the plot along. More time should have been spent on delving into his relationship with his father and his commitment to family. Perhaps more time could have also been spent on making sure that the film was free of “exotic dancers.” Just a suggestion.

I enjoyed this, which is rare for me to say about a romantic comedy. I think I've only truly enjoyed two of them. Ever. (Something's Gotta Give and My Big Fat Greek Wedding)

Though it got brutally predictable towards the end, it was still pretty funny. Not in-your-face funny like The Hangover, but ha-ha funny nonetheless.

The chemistry between them was strong, I felt. It was fun to watch them together (but kind of annoying how they kept getting pulled apart).

The usual conventions were mildly irritating. Instead of being down-home, folksy Southerners, they were folksy/hippy Alaskans - though not nearly as "quirky" caricatures as these movies usually make them. Also, this family would have to be brain dead not to realize just how overbearing and forceful they were being.

But the dumbest part had to be the INS agent. Of all the cases he sees every day, he really had time to take this one personally? Really? This was the most unrealistic bit and served no purpose but to create tension (which it didn't really).

Nit picking aside, I enjoyed it. It made me laugh and have a good time. What more do you want.

The Proposal - 5/10

It's pretty ordinary, but it's got some good performances, a few funny moments and the two hours flew by very quickly. Not something I'll probably ever see again, but an OK way to kill a couple of hours.

Saw it on Saturday. Rather formulaic, but it works as a fun romantic comedy, mostly for the work of Sandra Bullock, Ryan Renolds and Betty White. This is the type of film that SB does best (although I can't think of a Bullock film which I've hated) and I thought she was funny in it. RR was good as well. There's nothing in the film that you haven't seen done before, so don't expect any groundbreaking comedy but as a fun movie with quite a few laughs and very little profanity or gross-out humor, you can't go too wrong.
