After many years of false starts (and announcements), Richard Stanley’s sci-fi/horror cult classic HARDWARE is finally set to make its U.S. DVD debut, and will appear on Blu-ray as well. Fango got the scoop that Severin Films will release the film on extras-packed discs this fall.
HARDWARE stars Stacey Travis as a woman living in a postapocalyptic future who is given some robot scraps by scavenger Dylan McDermott; the pieces soon reconfigure themselves into a murderous robot, with plenty of bloodshed ensuing. Trimmed to avoid an X rating by original distributor Miramax for its 1990 release, the movie will be presented in uncut, uncensored form, transferred from Stanley’s personal print. Extras will include:
• Audio commentary
• Deleted scenes
• Behind-the-scenes footage
• Stanley’s never-before-seen hour-long Super 8 version
... retail price info and cover art are coming soon. “They say, ‘Once in every generation a plague shall fall upon you,’ ” the writer/director tells us, “and so it is that after an absence of almost two decades, I am proud to announce the second coming of HARDWARE to American shores in its full, savage, psychedelic, utterly unexpurgated and wholly unrated glory. The Shadow Theatre has recently concluded a deal with Severin Films and Norman Hill at Subversive Cinema, who oversaw the successful 2008 release of the DUST DEVIL boxed set, to fully restore, remix and remaster HARDWARE for its first appearance on DVD, and to provide the viewing public with an experience unlike anything they have ever seen before. You have been warned…”
Adds Severin’s David Gregory, “I saw a sneak preview of HARDWARE back in 1990 at the UK’s Shock Around the Clock festival, and as the end credits rolled, I, along with the rest of the late-night crowd, felt like we’d had our collective brains assaulted with a mixture of euphoria and cyberviolence. My Severin partners and I are ecstatic that we can debut this long-dormant horror/sci-fi classic on DVD and Blu-ray in collaboration with Richard Stanley and Norm Hill. Furthermore, the collection of rare goodies that Richard is gathering for the release is mind-blowing; this is sure to be the definitive edition of HARDWARE.”
Exploitation fans will also enjoy the news that Severin’s Carl Daft and Gregory are also preparing the U.S. DVDebut of SCREWBALLS, the raunchy 1983 drive-in fave from Roger Corman and director Rafal Zielinski. This one will also be accompanied by a bunch of brand new special features; look for it to bounce onto shelves in August.
I've been wanting to see this for quite some time.
