View Full Version : Ryan Reynolds will never be A-List

Even though he is amazingly good looking, Reynolds will never be able to cross over and be that A-list leading man.

Before people get the wrong perception, I am not bashing Reynolds for his good looks or his perfect body. So here goes....

This started ti bother me when I picked up my coyp of Entertainment Weekly and saw a shirtless Ryan Reynolds on their with the headline 'Our Leading Man'.

First off, in all of the movies that I have seen him in, he has that very dry sarcastic wit that encompasses his range of 'acting'. He comes off as errogant in his movies, and for whatever reason his on screen persona seems to resemble his off screen one (very much in the same realm as Chris Evans).

But he has never shown me the slightest bit of true acting chops that could even put him in the same area as someone like Hugh Jackman (someone who can be a leading man in a movie, but still isn't an A-list celebrity). And I think that is part of the problem.

Secondly, he wants to star in movies that directly "fan boy" oriented (I am talking about the supposed Deadpool and Flash movies that had been circulating). But then I see this guy constantly shirtless on magazine covers (not that this is a bad thing that you keep yourself in shape, but it comes off as egotistical when you constantly see it) talking about how he sees video games as complete waste of time, basically bashing the fanboys that he wants people to support him.

While someone like Jackman embraces all of the fanboys and takes time to make sure that they get everything that they want in their movie.

What it boils down to is not only does Reynolds not have the acting chops to even lead a summer blockbuster, he doesn't have the sincerity or the 'appeal' to audiences that will translate to leading man status.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

He's a utility man, for sure, but the success of The Proposal will transfer him from the minors because people seem to respond positively to him. Once he makes the transition, which will probably be cemented by Deadpool, his success and his marriage to Scarlett will turn him into prime paparazzi fodder and we will moan about it for a month or two.

Then someone else will come along.

He will work cosistently, though.

Lots of actors get by just fine without "Chops". I think Ryan is a likable guy who just might make it to leading man material, but he is not yet and he needs to start doing some better movies. He does come off arrogant in his acting to me as well. He is only 32 and has a few years before we can write him off.

I thought he was already A-list.

Only if A stands for Abs.

People know of and like the guy, but if he and Tom Hanks die on the same day, two guesses as to who'll get the most coverage.

Oh, Adam...

...I bet you I can get this right in only two guesses - since there is only two people involved in the first place?

It's a trick question: whatever those two vapid wastes of space from "The Hills" do will instantly dominate the media, no matter what the death.

Sad, but it's gonna happen.

He's arrogant and can't carry a movie for longer than 30 minutes

As for the shirtless pics. You have two choices. You either listen to your publicist, or you don't and Ryan obviously does. And keep in mind, that they probably took 200 pics that day, and conoodled him into doing 3 shirtless ones. It's how "they" work.

That said, I've always been a Reynolds fan. Yea, he has a tendency to play the same character over and over, but how many actors in "the wood" do the same? Lots. He's got his share of "un-Ryan" roles, and he'll have more in the future. His typical role is his bread and butter, so it just makes sense that he gets tossed those roles. Nobody slags Swartzenegger for being "only an action" guy... and at least Ryan CAN act.

Oh, and he's Canadian (well, from BC, that's close enough ;) ), which is always a good thing.

I totally agree with this rant if you are referring to Reynolds never being taken seriously. Cause I dont see it either.

But I refuse to knock on him as a person. I dont know if any of you remember when MTV followed around a celeb almost every week (the tagline;" You think you know, but you have no idea...") I think the show was called "Diary"
Well, I remember watching one of those episodes and Ryan Reynolds was the featured celeb. It was at the time when he was dating Alanis Morrisette. From what I saw, he couldnt of been a nicer dude. He visited his parents, took his family out to dinner, signed autographs for a ton of fans and treated everyone with respect. He seemed ridiculously down to earth and didnt seem arrogant at all.

I think The Nines and the upcoming movie Fireflies in the Garden is proof that he CAN be a very good serious dramatic actor. He was especially excellent in Fireflies in the Garden.

He also has given nice performances in Definitely, Maybe and The Proposal. Not to mention he's very funny in Waiting.

I'm a fan.

I'm not necessarily saying he isn't a nice guy, but you do realize that people almost always act differently when they have cameras infront of them filming them?

His career path seems to be very similar to Matthew McCoughaney's lately . . . a lot of romantic comedies and known more for his looks than anything else. I think he can be A-list if has a breakout movie and/or performance like Hugh Jackman did with X-Men and X2. He just needs to start picking better roles . . . if he can.

I can't speculate too much on his off screen persona, but only that I have heard that the guy was an arrogant dick.

As far as his movies, I agree 100% with what bigred said. He has the Matthew McCoughaney thing down pat. He doesn't even have the laid back charisma that McCoughaney has.

His 'charm' and 'humor' just become annoying after roughly 5 minutes and in the movies that I have seen him act serious (Reynolds and Ammityville), they are mediocre at best.

I think he's fantastic. I've loved him since Two Guys, A Girl, and a Pizza Place. He's got way more talent than McCoughaney and even though he hasn't been in the best films, he's usually the best part about them. If that makes sense.
