That Micachu album is rocking my number three spot.

I only recently started listening to 2009 albums and am informally proceeding from least-anticipated to most-anticipated so I've yet to hear Dan Deacon, Dirty Projectors, Sunset Rubdown, Fiery Furnaces, Tim Hecker, and Fever Ray.

But, yeah, my favorite album is MPP. I really can't do that thing where I deny my actual feelings in favor of something more distinctive. Still, to save some face from the unreasonable embarrassment stemming from this selection, I will qualify: it's not better than their last four albums. I might actually be the douchebag at shows that says their old material is better with a false sense of superiority. I mean, when I went to one of their shows there were conflicting feelings of antipathy and elatement--elatement in seeing such a (still) fairly "out-there" band tour with an actual budget to sold-out shows and antipathy to see them perform to a mostly-bored audience (energized only at the opening progression to "My Girls"). But, whatever, no valid reasons to be hatin'.

I haven't heard a lot of the albums that would likely constitute my year-end list but, from what I've heard:

1. MPP
2. Magik Markers - Balf Quarry
3. Micachu & the Shapes - Jewellery
4. Eat Skull - Wild & Inside
5. Wavves - Wavvves
6. Mastodon - Crack the Skye
7. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz!
8. Jon Hopkins - Insides
9. Here We Go Magic - Here We Go Magic
10. Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Beware (still growing on me too)

Hon. mentions: Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas, Handsome Furs, NOMO, Marissa Nadler, Mi Ami, The Juan Maclean, Sonic Youth

Disappointments: Bob Dylan, Lily Allen, Gui Boratto, Crystal Antlers, Neko Case, Morrissey, Super Furry Animals

I've actually avoided that White Rabbits album because I've read they sound too much like Spoon. Maybe that's just a lazy reviewer making a connection between the band and their producer...?

At the moment, my top five would be something like:

1. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
2. The Fiery Furnaces - I'm Going Away
3. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
4. Alamaailman Vasarat - Huuro Kolkko
5. Bibio - Vignetting the Compost

"The Crane Wife" is the only Decemberists album I genuinely enjoy (although I cannot deny Meloy's talent, I also cannot deny by implacable hatred--just look and listen to the dude), so I was actually looking forward to his latest, a supposed extension of the style he developed on "Crane". Really disappointing, I hate concept albums with an actual emphasis on the narrative...who listens to music for narrative when there are so many other mediums, even ones that incorporate music? The riffs are overly-familiar and he reprises motifs too many times (something that's diluted a lot of the Fiery Furnaces recent material). And fucking children's choir. No.

Listened to Junior Boys, Sunn O))), and Wilco. All solid stuff.

Likely to make any requisite list:

The Smith Westerns - The Smith Westerns
Blank Dogs - Under and Under
Ganglians - Monster Head Room
YACHT - See Mystery Lights

WHOA. Don't know where to start with that. Did you ignore The Marshall Mathers LP & The Eminem Show?

Anyways I've hardly clicked into gear this year with my music, Manics was VERY good, White Lies had a solid debut album as well, I'm sure I've heard more, but need to clarify on the actual year, because I was going around saying The 59' Sound was album of the year, only to find out it was a 2008 one.

So I've finally stopped listening to The Great Misdirect for the time being to listen to things I've had in my backlog for awhile, and I have to say that Shakira's new CD is really growing on me. When I first heard the lead single I was pretty meh about it, but now I find it incredibly catchy (despite the lyrics being retarded for the most part), and the rest of the album is fantastic as well. Which is awesome, because I found Oral Fixation Vol. 2 to be kind of disappointing. I don't tend to like her English stuff that much, but I'm really liking the sort of electro-pop approach she took with this album.

Their best, and most accessible, album to date. Full of brilliant dance pop music - some for the dancefloor, some for the comedown.
Standout tracks: Vision One (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUgktUe6q2s) / You Don't Have a Clue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcoKxYv8NCQ) / The Girl and the Robot (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAWdBJ-yVAk)

Florence and the Machine: Lungs

The album Kate Bush should have made in the 12 years that Aerial took, heralds the arrival of a major talent to watch.
Standout Tracks: Howl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYlLfMUbsgk) / Hurricane Drunk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SoHV229_DQM) / Drumming Song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpLXQorSQe8)

Annie: Don't Stop / All Night EP

A pure pop masterpiece, the kind of thing that Kylie Minogue would trade her left arm to have recorded.
Standout Tracks: Take You Home (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4GqTLLr_Ks) / I Don't Like Your Band (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zN8_YhOeXL4)/ My Love is Better (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htV85zI9OWY) / Can't Let Go (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwfoQF0g5ek)

and one, inevitable, winner

FEVER RAY

The only album I've heard this year that works equally brilliantly both as a collection of indivually amazing tracks and as a whole, 45 minute, suite of music. It's dense, inventive, dark and beautiful. It's good enough that I'm not sure I want another Knife album at all.
Standout tracks: All of them
