Johnny Depp is campaigning for the title of “Best Celebrity Tipper” after leaving a $4,000 tip after a late-night dinner at a Chicago restaurant.

The 46-year-old Oscar-nominated actor was in the Windy City celebrating a red carpet screening of his new movie crime drama Public Enemies with a group of friends - including his co-star Marion Cotillard and the film’s director Michael Mann - when he left the generous tip at Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse.

Johnny partied at the eatery until 2.30am, racking up a $4,400 bill the tip.

“Depp hosted a party of 15 people, including Mann and Cotillard, and the tip was split 12 ways. Depp is the finest of all the stars I have ever waited on. And he is a true icon, and his ability to respect others is phenomenal. He loves Chicago, and Chicago loves him. Depp is one cool and generous dude,” server Mohammed A. Sekhani told The Chicago Sun-Times this week.

If I was a multi-millionaire I might be leaving $4,000 tips too. Unfortunately those poor waiters will have to suffice with my $2.

I don't tip...I don't tip because society says I have to. All right, if someone deserves a tip, if they really put forth an effort, I'll give them something, a little something extra. But this tipping automatically, it's for the birds. As far as I'm concerned, they're just doing their job.

They are doing a job, a shitty job. Unsociable hours, hard labour and I can't even begin to imagine the ammount of snotty assholes they serve every night. IMO they deserve a tip.

What's the big deal? Yesterday I tipped my trash guys $40 dollars. Relative to my income that's way more than Depp's $4000:D
