"Watchmen" director's cut headed to theaters

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The director's cut of "Watchmen," featuring an additional 25 minutes of footage and the death of a supporting character, will receive a limited theatrical rollout during the weekend ahead of its July 21 home-video release.

The superhero saga, which was considered to be a bit of a box office disappointment during its first go-round in March, will screen in Los Angeles, New York, Minneapolis and Dallas.

The rollout will culminate with a special screening July 25 at the Comic-Con International confab in San Diego, taking advantage of a Blu-ray Disc feature that will allow any viewer in North America to watch the movie at the same time as the audience at Comic-Con, see and hear director Zack Snyder comment on the movie, and even ask questions. The screening will then be archived and will be able to be accessed for future viewings.

"Comic-Con, it isn't just comic book fanatics, it's cinephiles as well. It'll be cool to discuss what people are thinking," Snyder said at a "Watchmen" press day, held Wednesday at Warner Bros., where the news was unveiled.

The day was designed to showcase a bonus Blu-ray feature called Maximum Movie Mode as well as features to be seen in Snyder's Blu-ray release of "300: The Complete Experience."

The theatrical rerelease is unusual, given that the costly movie grossed just $107.5 million domestically. Critics were also divided about the movie, with some saying it was too slavish to the graphic novel's many devotees.

Snyder, however, stood by it. "I'm proud of the movie. It does everything I wanted it to," he said.

Cool, might get around to seeing it before it hits DVD since I'm in one of the target areas.

We'll never get it over here. So I will wait for dvd. 25 minutes only? I was under the impression that the director's cut was much much longer. Oh well, 25 minutes more is good. Enjoy it those who get to see it. I really liked Watchmen.

Also...

It seems AICN got a chance to view a bit of the Director's Cut and raved about one major scene in particular that was cut from the theatrical cut.

**SPOILERS***

As for what scenes will be added to the Director's Cut, I can verify that you will get to see the brutal murder of Hollis Mason by a bunch of top-knotted thugs. As with most of the violent scenes in WATCHMEN, Snyder has taken a dozen or so panels from the graphic novel and transformed them into breathtaking cinema. He's also turned the sequence into a half-clever, half-heartbreaking homage to RAGING BULL, with Hollis flashing back to his crime-fighting heyday as the "Intermezzo" from CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA briefly dominates the soundtrack. The music - and his punch-drunk reverie - ends abruptly when the gang's ringleader busts open Hollis's skull with his Nite Owl trophy. This is a brilliantly shot-and-edited sequence. If the rest of the DC is up to this standard, WATCHMEN will officially enter the "Best of '09" conversation.

**END SPOILERS***

It sounds like it could be an amazing sequence. :)

Adding MORE footage to a poorly paced and poorly received movie in the first place could be the dumbest idea I've heard this year. Sorry fans but what theatre chain in their right mind would want to take up space with this thing?

I'd probably just wait for blu ray even if it was playing in my area.

I may check it out if it's playing somewhere on Long Island.

If I lived in one of the target cities, I'd definitely go as I didn't get a chance to catch it a second time in theater and really felt that I needed it to give it an accurate review. I'm not sure if I ever even rated it in my Watchmen thread here... :(

I'm in Atlanta . . . I'm SOL.

Probably wouldn't have gone anyway. Thought the theatrical version was okay, but don't know if I can sit through 25 more minutes of it.

I just saw the DC yesterday, and I think it makes the film much stronger. Certain flashbacks make much more sense, and the Hollis Mason scene was gold.
