The Term "Popcorn Movie"

Is anyone else sick of it and it's variations? "This is just a movie where you can chomp on your popcorn and blah blah blah I'm giving a nonsensical reason for liking a movie that I don't have to be ashamed about liking in the first place."

What if you don't like popcorn? What then? And is popcorn consumption limited to summer blockbusters? Guess I'll stick to my Uzbekistan llama farming dramas. ;) Maybe I'm just biased against that awful snack (yeah, I said it) but that term makes me want to drop kick a widdle kitten.

"Oh noes, you didn't like this movie? Go back to your Disaster Movie/The Godfather, tool!"

That is one of the more ridiculous statements I read on forums. What the fuck says you can't like action movies and more 'classy' (for lack of a better word 'cause I'm a bit tired) movies? Fuck off, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a favorite movie of mine and I love Die Hard. The other night I watched Saw and Shopgirl. I'll just let that sink in...

Seriously...What's the effing point in being so ridiculous about other people's tastes in movies? "You like The Longest Yard remake? You have a terrible taste in movies!" Never mind that the person's favorite movie could be The Seventh Seal.

"Your favorite movie is The Godfather...No wonder you didn't like Transformers." Same sort of thing... The person that's directed to could have shelves full of mindless action.

Chill the fuck out. It's not that serious. (Yes, I realize the potential hypocrisy in this post.)

(I hope my thread made sense.:()

I approve of this rant! (except the disliking popcorn part, that's ridiculous!)

All I've said all along is that we should always be expecting more from everything we love in life, and in this case movies.

I have never rated a film 10/10 because I havent yet seen a perfect film. I am always wanting more. And this "popcorn" movie craze/shenangians is definitely leaving me wanting more.

There is a particular film about a group of 1970's High School stoners named after a Led Zeppelin song that I really don't like but a lot of people I've known and met over the yeards tend to really gravitate towards it. If I judged everyone for liking it, I probably wouldn't have any friends.

Which tells me that your grading scale has more to do with the quality of the film, as opposed to your general enjoyment of the film. Don't get me wrong, I don't think there is anything wrong with that, but I'm more reactionary when I rate means.

I base the movie on my personal reaction to the film, whether it be a lightweight comedy or a small character drama or a shit blowin' up extravaganza. That's not to say that technical issues don't matter to me, and that your emotional response doesn't matter to you. It's just that I operate on the further end of that spectrum.

Which is why it irks me to no end - and to an extent - is making this place a lot less "fun" than it used to be. Debating is great, arguing is pointless, and name-calling is downright juvenile (I'm not directing this at you adam, just bringing up more of the less that spin that a lot of threads around here have taken lately).

I say we all just chill out, keep in mind that we're among fellow movie fans (hell, is it worse to have friends who are interested in the same things as you are but share different opinions, or to have friends who aren't interested much in movies at all?) and smoke a J.

I'm one of those people that uses the term "popcorn movie." I basically eat popcorn every time I go to the movies . . . can't remember the last time I didn't get popcorn when I went to the movies. But I use the term to reference movies that are meant to be fun . . . entertainment . . . lots of explosions, action, one-liners, fun characters and the like. Nothing major meant by it.

As far as liking different kinds of movies, and using liking one movie as an excuse to not liking another is basically crap. People like different kinds of movies for different kinds of reasons. But just because I love The Godfather and Unforgiven doesn't mean I didn't enjoy 300 and Die Hard with a Vengeance. Different movies offer different things . . . people need to deal with that.

It depends on how the person describes his like towards a movie that is generally considered bad. If you are falling all over yourself trying to convince us that The Longest Yard remake is simply awesome - then one might question your taste in movies. But everyone has guilty pleasures and movies that "spoke" to them if nobody else.

I think you make a valid point. People need to calm down over this crap.

This reaction is mostly reserved to the popcorn crowd. When have you seen a thread involving some smaller, more obscure movie where the fans are saying the same things you'll see in a Terminator Salvation thread or a Transformers 2 thread? Where the fans talk an endless amount of crap to the detractors. It's like people think they're being personally attacked when it's about a movie they have nothing to do with. Get over it.

If I cared about what every person thought about my favorite movies, I'd be in a lot of arguments every day.

And for the record, I love popcorn. It's my #1 snack. To the point where I make it on the stove in a pot because I can't go back to microwaving it. The difference in taste is pretty huge.

Word.

Though let's be honest, due to the nature of these films, many of the fans of such films (but by no means all) tend to younger, more casual film-goers, in other words people who are more likely to act defensively if a film they like is criticized. This is no doubt due to the fact that younger people tend to be more immature and insecure and due to the fact that casual moviegoers are more likely to interpret any criticism as snobbery and as an attempt to cast dispersions on them as opposed to on the film. Over time you learn not to personalize such things as much.

there are 250 releases a year or something right? here's an idea, shut the hell up about how crappy the plot in the "popcorn summer" flick was and go find some of the other 249 to study.

When I hear a movie is a perfect "popcorn movie" it just leads to believe it will be shallow on plot, shallow acting, with some intermittent moments of action or suspense. The movie is just good enough to watch, but shitty enough that you can give extra attention to your big bowl of popcorn without feeling like you've missed much. Hardly a complement to be called a popcorn movie. after all, and I don't know about the rest of you, but I go to the theater for the $8 bag of popcorn as much as I do the movie $10 movie.
