Sounds good to me.
Pecorino is the the bomb. Also Red Windsor. Though I'll try anything.
Truly favorite foods are vindaloo (and all other good curries), fried mushrooms, felafel, any vegetable but cauliflower, and pasta carbonara.
Best restaurant I've ever been to is the French Laundry, worst is a greazy spoon I went to for breakfast in the Tampa bay area years ago whose name is thankfully far gone from my memory now. But I do remember the screaming pain I endured later that ruined my road trip. I usually consider myself pretty daring, but that's the last time I ever eat purple meat.
Most horrifying thing I've ever eaten in my life is probably a tie between lutefisk and balut. I've always wanted to try cazu marzu, but I'd probabaly turn chickenshit if anybody ever put it in front of me.
Foodies unite, indeed.

You got to try some stinky cheese Mister...it's noticeably absent from your list. Stinky cheese and pickle on sweet biscuits is food of the GODS!

Cheese is best in beer cheese fondu. I never know what goes into it, but I've eaten that stuff at 4 in the morning after a night out drinking. I do also like cheese with summer sausage.
I love me some cuban food - real cuban sandwiches, picadillo, cuban bread - fresh, a loaf with some butter. I'm getting some of my first real stuff in 3 years next week. Mmmmm.
Something good with nachos is a buffalo chicken dip recipe someone turned me onto recently. I could eat that until turning into a Monty Python film segment.
Sushi - again, I always get this ordered for me, but haven't come across anything I've disliked.

boil or bake 3 chicken breasts (assuming medium sized)
Shred the chicken up
2 cups mozzarella cheese
"A little over 1 bottle" of Frank's Hot Sauce (or a similar buffalo sauce or you can make your own)
1 cup of ranch or blue cheese
Put all in a pan low/med heat for 45 minutes or crock pot on low for 3-4 hours (recommended)
Eat with some nacho chips, though I've eaten it straight and on bread.

1. Meatball SUB!!!
I Love this thing, Its the only thing I ever get when I go to Subway. My preffered way is footlong if I'm really hungry, With Italian Bread, Parmesan and Provolone cheese, Tomatoes, Mustard, The meatballs of course, and then Toasted.
2.Rally's Fries
Forget the burger, If only I have the fries I'm good. By far in my opinion the best Fries ever!!!!!!!!!!
3.Stuffed Crust Pizza
My favorite pizza, I take it with Pepperoni and Sausage, extra cheese and from Pizza Hut.
4.Hot Wings
I love Hot WIngs!!! There's this place called Buffalo WIngs and Ribs here in Fort Wayne where I live, I usally get the really hot Wings since I can't handle the fire ones. Most people can't the waiters have to warn you when you get them and when you open the box there's a note with another warning.
5.Mashed Potatoes
I don't know what it is, but I love Mashed Potatoes. With Gravy of course, By far the thing I eat the most during Thanksgiving.

My old favourites used to be homemade burgers in a bun with melted cheese on em. yum

Itz worked pretty well In the past 7 months I've lost about 45 pounds, and most of my fat. I've gone from being really really over weight to being healthy and almost having a six pack. My missus was diagnosed about 18 months ago. She copes fine, except when we are in restaurants or at friends, which we were on Friday night and she could eat literally fuck all.
Also, the gluten-free section in the supermarket is tiny AND over-priced.
On the plus side, I prefer gluten-free bread as it is sweeter; same with pasta.
And Snack a Jacks are awesome. We enjoy those.

Well since this is completely recent (I found out today) does this mean I have to start reading labels like crazy and asking in restaurants how things are prepared and whatnot?
How does she cope, to get personal? I LOVE breads and pastas and am freaking out about giving them up (or at least changing, which will take some getting used to but after awhile it'll be ok) but on the bright side I look at it as, breads and pastas are the key contributors to gaining weight so maybe I'll lose some weight out of all of this.
And what are Snack-a-Jack's?

Snack-a-Jacks are a gluten-free product which, for want of a better analogy, you would use in place of crisps (chips to you) or popcorn. They also make rice biscuits or cakes, which come in a variety of flavours and are very low fat. (Toffee rice cakes RULE!)
My missus does not cope very well. She likes the stuff that makes her feel bloated, sometimes cramped. The good news, however, is that there are alternatives to all the good pasta and bread - and it should complement your diet, rather than have you asking for weird, crazy stuff in the supermarket.
Frankly, it all reminds me of brown pasta and wholemeal bread, which is heavier than most whitebreads, but when you eat it you will not feel as...uh...bunged up.
More frankly: You will not have to ask for crazy stuff, mainly because, I imagine, like most people with a gluten problem, you will simply tolerate the uncomfortable feelings in your stomach and eat whatever the fuck you feel like.
My missus, it must be said, often reports that she has "period cramps"; this is a lie; she had cheese and onion crisps on a buttered roll.
Long story short, you will feel like farting and will suffer cramps often. As far as I can tell, however, you will make a concious effort, about once a month, to avoid such awfulness and try to eat right.

I was debating this.

Oh you can do that. It's pretty simple; at the worst it's time consuming. The only hard part is just cooking the chicken to temperature, but you could even buy those frozen precooked breasts from the grocery. Shredding the chicken is just a matter of picking it apart so it's in little slivers that'll fit on a chip. Once you get the chicken shredded up, it's all just putting everything in the pan and letting it go --- You can use any type of pan it would fit in, just let it cook on low or it'll burn/stick.
Trust me, man - I don't think this is one of those dishes you can go wrong on, it's one that you can only improve upon.
I'm not kidding when I say it's like crack.

I'm gonna go ahead and toot my own horn here (beep beep) and admit that I can cook just about anything. And that I'm good as well. Cooking is one of the few things in life that I actually enjoy and therefore the love I have goes into the food I make. The last thing I really put time and effort into was a 3 meat Lasagna I made that I'm pretty sure made a co-worker of mine orgasm when she bit into it (I took it to work to share with friends because it made so much of it and I knew they'd enjoy it better than school food, I was right).
The restaurant I worked in for almost 3 years was a "Country Cooking" type place based in hearty home cooked meals and operates under the hours of 5am-2pm, so I specialized more in breakfast foods than anything. But if anyone needs any advice or recommendations for stuff, just let me know. I'm more than willing to share recipes I have memorizes and experiences I have from cooking.

We called it country fried steak here. Basically just take a pork tenderloin patty (thawed) dip it in raw egg then dip it in a mix of bread crumbs and flour. Deep fry until it floats (dont worry if its dark or not) then slather it in peppered country gravy (white gravy, add pepper if you feel like). Serve with a scoop of mashed potatoes also covered in pepper gravy. When I made the meal I added green beans for the veggie because if you use corn then you have 3 starches. The green beans also brighten up the dish because the gravy is white, the potatoes are white and the country fried steak is brown. Kinda bland, color-wise, if you ask me.

jackson - country fried is my preferred term as well. i haven't had a good one since moving to Minnesota for reasons that were obvious to me but I overlooked because I love that stuff and thought Cracker Barrels would all be the same.
Thanks man, I'd really like to try and make my own. I love that dish. No doubt, you gotta have the potatoes --- Hash brown casserole would add some color to the plate, and go with the meat and green beans.
Bake - That sounds freaking amazing. Is the mac and cheese backed on the cheese or in place of the cheese?

Thanks man, I'd really like to try and make my own. I love that dish.
Well like I said, cook it until it floats. You want it brown, obviously, but if you cook it until its dark then you've over cooked it and it makes it hard to cut and chew then as well. I had one off of the buffet at Ponderosa yesterday that was like that. I tried to pick the best of the bunch, and thought I did, but when I cut into it it was tough and hard to chew, and turned me off of it. Not to mention the gravy wasn't flavored very well (I had to add pepper to it).
You can make your own pork tenderloin patties by buying pork chops and deboning them then mashing the pork up and forming them into patties, but its easier and quicker to buy them pre-made. They should look like cubed steaks in the package (flat and string-like).
Speaking of cube steaks, something easy to make that is good, and that I havent made in a long time is Swiss Steak.
Take pepper, salt, sliced onions and tomato juice and pour into a deep baking pan. On a grill, or a flat surface, take cubed steaks, dip them in egg, then roll them in flour. Cook them on the flat surface just enough that they brown a little, then submerge them in the juice concoction. Cooking times vary on the size of the pan and how many you're making so I'm not gonna give a time or temperature or anything. Again, add some potatoes and a veggie and you're in heaven.

Thanks Jackson13 -- that was the problem at Cracker Barrel - it was like I was eating the sole of a shoe. I'd tried 3 different ones there and they were all the same, so I stopped going there for the most part since that was my dish to get. I'm betting that people up here just don't eat them and when they do think that's what it's supposed to be. Sad, sad, sad stuff --- They don't even give you grits unless you ask for them. God how I long for warmer climates. :(
I'm not sure I've had cubed steak. I tried to make a chopped steak with brown mushroom gravy since I'd never had one since back in the 80s at Sizzler --- It ended up like a flat meatball or something. I think I over pressed the beef maybe. Any suggestions with this one? I can make gravy ace, but don't have skills with making the meat. I can do hamburgers, and steak (basics) proper, but these other things I haven't had much experience and with the price of meat it's not good to experiment really.

I think I over pressed the beef maybe. Any suggestions with this one?
Not really. Sorry. I buy most stuff, especially like this, pre-made. That way I can just do what I gotta do with it and not worry about that part.
Speaking of meatballs though (since you said flat meatball) a really easy, excellent recipe is to take or make meatballs and throw them in a crockpot. Pour in BBQ Sauce, ketchup and grape jelly (no joke, not a ton, but a couple big spoonfuls). Cook on high all day, stirring occasionally. They're amazing. A lot of people like sweet and sour or just BBQ and nothing else, but I make these around Christmas time and take the crockpot to the family gatherings and I always leave with an empty crockpot.

You have exquisite taste Cosimo...pop tarts are a real delicacy. But yes, thin crust pizza all the way. That deep pan shit just don't commute with me.
Here's my recipe for tasty lamb curry (not an authentic Indian recipe by any stretch but yummy all the same)...
Fry 15-20 curry leaves in hot, hot, hot olive oil until they start browning.
Take the heat down a couple of notches.
Add plenty cubed lamb and sear, this should take about 4 minutes.
Add 1 chopped red onion, a chopped chilli and 4-6 cloves of crushed garlic. Stir until softened.
Add 1 lamb stock cube, 2 tablespoons garam masala, 1 tablespoon of ground cumin, 1 tablespoon of ground coriander, a teaspoon of paprika, 2 bay leaves, some freshly grated ginger, a large squeeze of lemon and about a quarter tube of double concentrated tomato puree.
Stir until it reaches a paste consistency.
Keep on a low heat.
Add a couple of handfuls of chopped button mushrooms and stir into the paste.
Add a tin of tomatoes (preferably those lovely Napolina ones or similar) and maybe a little water.
Stick a lid on it and allow to simmer for an hour or so.
About 10 minutes before it's ready add several handfuls of spinach.
When the spinach has cooked down it's ready to serve.

And a super cold beer just to be proper classy like.

I am a certified glutton.
I eat a TON, but am a rather picky eater. I can't stand most vegetables, especially onions, and I'm repulsed by seafood and mushrooms.
I have a very weak spot for Oreos and sweets in general. It is a very rare occasion for an entire bag to last more than one sitting. Once I open it, it's usually devoured within minutes.
I've also been known to buy chocolate milk by the half gallon and consume it all between the time I leave the checkout line and the time I drive out of the parking lot.
I also once ate 22 ice cream sandwiches in one sitting.
I eat entire pizzas, also in one sitting.
I drink a gallon of water a day, at least.
I have a hard time making a box of cereal last longer than a morning.
Yeah, I'm a pig.
As far as favorite restaurants, I really don't have a strong favorite, but I do LOVE Wagamama when I'm in the UK. I also love Buffets because they cater to my gluttonous tendencies. I've also been addicted to Chipotle lately, though those burritos can be unsatisfying (but very delicious). Oh, and I once at three entrees at an IHOP restaurant. I've also eaten an entire cake in one sitting.
Yeah, I eat a lot. But I also run and lift a lot, so I'm not obese (though I'm sure I will be if I keep up these habits once my metabolism slows down).

Some statements and some questions...
I had a ribeye this weekend and while it was pretty good, it's confirmed something for me that I'm setting into dogma: from here forward, I only want sirloin.
I am the absolute king of salmon. I'm convinced I could eat it every other day and not get sick of it for at least a year.
Is anybody else here a fan of chicken and dumplings? If so, how do you normally like it cooked? There is a recipe, which seems like the orthodox one, that has strips of dough and the chicken itself all cooked together in a single pot. There is, however, another take on the dish, which involves a seperate pot of dumplings, usually thick lumps of dought, in gravy with the chicken fried (or baked), and served, seperately. The latter is what I was raised on and what I strongly prefer.
Is there anybody here who likes cabbage rolls? Or maybe the similar cabbage soup. (I saw the latter made by the late Jeff Smith on his Frugal Gourmet program once.) It's a central-eastern European dish. You take hamburger and pork sausage and mix it together with rice into balls (about the size of a baseball), then wrap cabbage leaves around it, securing them with toothpicks. All of this is then cooked in a tomato based thick soup. You have to be a little careful with the toothpicks, but they're easily found, unless you eat like Belushi playing Bluto.
My grandmother made it for years and I will always have a taste for it. Jeff's soup was similar, just using kielbasa and loose cabbage along with the rice instead of forming it into balls.

I love food too much, and with a family history of weight issues, just a bad combination!
But some of my fav places are:
Cracker Barrel
The German Buffet at Epcot
Cyrstal Palace Buffet at Magic Kingdom
Longhorns
KFC
Papa Johns
Sonnys BBQ
Ruths Chris Steakhouse
McDonalds
I also cook and can do quite a bit in the kitchen.
One of my fav recipes is a pork tenderloin in a white wine sauce. So delicious but a pain to make so I only do it on special occasions.

I just bought sirloin for dinner tonight. I'm going to fry it off and have it with grilled asparagus, new potatoes and peppercorn sauce.
I heart salmon...just steamed in foil with lemon, olive oil, black pepper and a knob of good butter.
I've never been a fan of dumplings as I find them a little too stodgy for my taste, but those cabbage rolls sound pretty damn delicious. I'll be sure to make them at some point and post my thoughts (and maybe some pictures).
This thread is evil. I am producing vast quantities of saliva right now...I've just been swimming and I'm mighty famished.

Sorry if I sound like a simpleton.
In short, where you get food for crackers.
Cracker Barrel is a chain specializing in American southern, country-style food. They also have gift shops with old-timey gifts, like things you would see pre-1970s... Toys like red wagons, yo-yos, really basic borderline Amish-type stuff. You can find videoes of like Andy Griffith, Howdy Doody Show. They also have a very wide selection of gourmet and hard to find candies. They usually always have fire places and rocking chairs out front, along with oversized checker boards to play while you wait. In other words, it's like walking into a time machine.
It's the type of place you usually need a wheel barrel to get back to your car. Giant portions, and plenty of it. Endless bowls of corn bread, and biscuits.

I thought Cracker Barrel was awful actually, but I've only been once. It was on a road trip to Florida and the food was just WAY too heavy and bland.
Last year, I went to visit my girlfriend in Roanoke and her mom cooked some REAL southern comfort food. I mean, the kind that I still crave and they can't replicate in the Midwest and sure as hell didn't taste like anything I ate at Cracker Barrel.

That's what the salt and pepper shakers are there for, and hot sauce or vinegar on request --- like any chain restaurant, it's not always consistent from place to place. Tampa, Alva, and a one outside of Mephis have had great food, but there is one outside of Bradenton that was always subpar. Their hashbrown casserole, country fried steak, or catfish is anything but bland, but nothing ever compares with homemade. Your comparison is just unfair.

Cracka-ass cracker.
I escorted a group of black and latino kids aged 8 - 13 to a place called Cracker Country. Once the kids figured out they didn't make crackers, and exactly why it was called Cracker Country... One of the longest days of my life.
(I actually ended up writing a letter to them afterwards, because while some of the kids were wiley, the crackers showed absolutely no patience -- One instance a historian refused to answer a question from a kid [who I had asked to wait until the historian was done talking and raise his hand] until I had to get a step beyond assertive with him -- pretty sad.)

I smothered my chicken in Reggae Reggae sauce and I can't say I was all that impressed...but since using it as an accompaniment to French Fries and the like I've become a convert.
I always find myself tempted by the Budweiser and Jack Daniels sauces. They are the kind of thing I see in B&M Bargains for 29p and pick up and put in my basket only to leave at the side of the checkout 5 minutes later...and then I walk home with a voice in my head shouting "It was 29p you fucking cheapskate bitch!"
Do pickles count as condiments? I couldn't live without pickled red cabbage, pickled cauliflower and Mrs Ellesmere's dill pickles.

I am not a huge condiments person myself. I will however put Heinz 57 on anything! I have put it on mac n cheese, steaks, baked potatoes (substitue for not having butter), hot dogs, hamburgers, cheesesteaks, pork n beans, pasta (for when you forget the ragu!), roasts of all kinds, and well pretty much any cut of meat on any animal, and that includes the time I had snake and crocodile.
And back to Cracker Barrel, it is good food, not great. I always get either the roast beef dinner or the country fried steak dinner. You can literally have the entire meal, including sides, covered in gravy there and I love me some GRAVY. Im not a gravy racist either, I love brown and white gravy equally if fixed properly. I also like it because southern foods sometimes take too much time or mess to make, easier to go to cracker barrel. I have had a few bad experiences there in my life time but overall they are pretty good!

Garnish with fresh coriander and serve with basmati rice boiled with turmeric, raita, lime pickle, aubergine chutney and garlic and coriander naan.
And a super cold beer just to be proper classy like.

Shrimp sauce (cocktail sauce) - Ketchup and Horseradish.
Tartar sauce - Mayo, relish, little bit of milk, dash of sugar.
Now for Arby's 2 signature sauces:

Well last July at 5'6 I weighed around 190 pounds. Now at 5'8 (grew) I weigh 140 Pounds. It just got to a point where I didn't like the way I looked and didn't like being Fat, so I just stopped drinkin anything but water until last month, Quit eatin as much and I started exercising frequently. I still don't drink that much soda or Shakes and I exercise more often and lift weights.
It seriously is like the biggest confidence booster someone could ever get. I've gone from being really overweight to having a six pack. I seriously reccomend it to anyone who doesn't like the way there body looks. It was a personal decision for me, but since then things have gotten much better for me all around in life. You know how in 'Goodfellas' they use razor blades to make garlic so thin that it melts in the pan? You can kinda sorta do this with peppers too.
When I make my Fire Chili (make it every football season, especially in time for the Superbowl) I take 1 Jalapeno pepper and cut it into very thin rings (like the kind you put on top of nachos). But I'm talking VERY THIN. I sear them down in a pan and then add the meat, and cook the meat in the pepper juice. I also use a mixture of regular beef and hot sausage (Jimmy Dean and Bob Evans both make some pretty mean hot sausage). I use spicy beans (pre-made, I mix Chili beans and Kidney beans) and also chop up a green pepper and a red pepper (usually Bell peppers) into small chunks. I cook the beans and the peppers together and then add EVERYTHING into one big sauce pan. I pour in tomato juice and add lots of cayenne pepper and bring it to a boil, then let it simmer for about an hour or so, stirring occasionally. Some people like their chili kind of runny, I make mine thick so that you can dunk saltines in it, or just put a spoonful on top of one.
Enjoy!

I love sandwiches actually. If I can find a sandwich that has the taste of a pizza, I'd eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
My favorite sub at the moment is the Jimmy John's veggie. They put a big helping of guacamole in between two slices of provolone and it is amazing. Their bread is also ridiculously good. Some of the JJ locations I've been to sell their day-old bread for 50 cents.

Living in Chicago, I should be a fan of deep dish too. But I really prefer New York style. Or even better, New Haven-style. I like to be able to fold my pizza slice down the middle.
Wow, this is a real edumacation.
They name pizza styles after American states!!!??? I truly didn't know this.
I just like it super SUPER thin with large crispy bubbles in the base, baked in a flat oven...with a smattering of tomato paste and some real good prosciutto and olives and all that jazz.
The Tesco Finest pizza range is almost as good as a bona fide restaurant job...

Enjoy!
That sounds fantastic. I would have a great big dollop of sour cream on that and some good crusty bread. Many thanks for the recipe Jackson.

Oh, I buy ground sausage (comes in 1lb rolls) and I just brown it up in a pan turning it into ground sausage. Do the same with the beef then combine them. And dont drain the juice! Everyone says the juice (or grease) is bad for you, and it probably is, but you lose a ton of flavor by doing so. Plus the meat can dry out faster, and you dont want that.
Fake edit!:
Buy these in any grocery store (get the roll not the links)

My wife makes these things we just call "sausage balls" and it's essentially tiny balls of cheddar cheese and ground sausage held together with bisquick (it's like a 60/30/10 sausage/cheese/bisquick ratio, I'm guessing.--- They are very addictive and no one seems to think otherwise. I'm having enchiladas for my dinner. It's the missus that makes it, though, which I think makes it all the tastier! On the whole, though, I'm not keen on Mexican food after I over-indulged it for a long period of time (particularly fajitas). I hate to say it, too, but tacos are one of my least favourite foods - but that may just have been my mum's crappy attempts when I was younger.

Yes, I have. Two years ago, I went to Dallas. Unfortunately, the trip was all work and no play (plus the weater was terrible; the rain poured and poured), so I didn't have any time to tour the city and find some good restaurants. Perhaps another time.
I've also been to New Mexico, and they've got some killer Mexican restaurants over there.
I'm sure Texas is packed with great Mexican restaurants, but we've got more than a few awesome places in Los Angeles and its surrounding area. Plus, there's some great Mexican restaurants in San Diego's Old Town area.

I have never had enchiladas but I just googled them...*drool*.
I am a total Mexican food novice and have only visited mediocre restaurant chains like Bar Burrito. Recipes are most welcome.
I've had a bit of a lucky day today. Went for a job interview this morning and got it. It's ideal for me as it's 2 fixed days a week, 9-6, 10 minutes walk and a competitive salary. Oh and my desk is between 2 plasma screens playing MTV2...result. I've also just received a text from my boyfriend saying he has won a Macbook Pro in a work competition...huzzah!
So anyway...I'm waffling because I'm happy and I think a celebratory dinner is in order.

I love Mexican food, mostly because I'm first generation Mexican-American and my family makes excellent food. They showed me what's up with it so I hardly ever go to Mexican restaurants because they can't even compare to the tastiness of a home cooked meal.
There is one place in Tijuana that has the best tacos I'll ever eat called Tacos Poblanos. It's a regular spot for my uncle and cousins and we have to go every time we visit simply because of how amazing the food is there. From what I heard, the owner has his own farm and raises the cows himself on grass. You can taste the difference in the meat, it's so juicy and soft. I am making myself so hungry now. Shit.

It may not always be good, but you never know what you're missing out on. I have so many different cookbooks from various regions of the world where I've learned a new technique, spice, fruit or veg.
An amazing hangover food is to cut potatoes and onions into thin rings, then cook them over low heat for like 20 minutes, until the potatoes are tender. Then beat like 3-4 eggs with salt and pepper in a bowl, then add the onions and potatoes. Put them back in the pan, and cook until it gets set underneath. Take a spatula and lift the edges so the uncooked eggs can cook underneath, almost like an omelette. Take a plate and invert the pan so that the mixture slides onto the plate, then put it back in the pan so the rest can cook for like 5 minutes.
You can add anything you like, that's just the basic recipe. Its extremely filling, which is why I make it after a night of drinking.

The other is menudo. It's hominy and tripe cooked in a broth from marrow and tripe with plenty of spices like oregano, bay leaves, salt, pepper, cumin, etc. It's an odd combination. I'd imagine many people outside of Mexico would find it disgusting except the Scottish who enjoy their haggis. But it really does cure hangovers. I know because it's what we eat after the late night after parties at weddings at my uncle's place. Definitely an acquired taste.
Here's a question concerning the most popular breakfast food. But has anybody ever cooked their eggs the way Gordon Ramsey made this way: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dU_B3QNu_Ks ?
My girlfriend introduced me to the method and it's really good. I was never a fan of runny eggs but these eggs are anything but. The texture is very nice and they taste much better to me than normal scrambled eggs.

Menudo, if it's prepared correctly, is worth killing a man over (okay...maybe not). I absolutely love it! There's a Mexican restaurant I know of that makes the best menudo, and every once in a great while, I'll head over there for breakfast for a big bowl. I like to load up my bowl of menudo with plenty of oregano, onions, pepper flakes, and lemon. It also tastes good with cabbage. I don't really eat menudo very often, but I usually always end up eating bowl after bowl of it during the holidays, especially Christmas and the beginning of the new year. As you said, menudo is an acquired taste, but in my opinion, it's one of the best things a person could ever eat.

It's all about the mustard for me in a sandwich. I guess I prefer the tangy flavor over the sweet side of mayo. I used to like mayo more as a kid but I have since converted to mustard.
Of course, ketchup is just more universal. It can go on things mustard and mayo just can't. It's an all terrain condiment.

I like eating sandwiches with mayo (in addition to mustard), but I don't care for burgers with mayo. I'd rather use mustard for my burgers.
Mustard is my favorite condiment. I love how it tastes. It's great for burgers, sandwiches, fries, hot dogs, potato salad, etc. I'm a big fan of Tabasco as well.
As for Ketchup, I like it, but I'm not a massive fan. I only use it when consuming fries, onion rings, and the occasional shrimp cocktail. I think that's it. I can't think of any other foods I use it for.

McD's Qtr Cheese grill with large fries and large diet coke for me. It's a rare junk food treat.
I was going to mention Burger King's sausage biscuit sandwiches as a hang over cure. I'm thinking there's a combination with the bread absorbing any leftover buzz, the nitrate/sodium shocking your head into submission, and the grease a slight re-hydrator.
On the mayo/mustard kick... It depends on what it is. Spicier meats I'll lean with mustard (pastrami, for example) but with things like roast beef or turkey I like mayo, but very light mayo. I won't get mayo at restaurants or fast food places usually though because they smother it on too much.
Deep fried meats though, I usually go with hot sauce.

I was going to mention Burger King's sausage biscuit sandwiches as a hang over cure...
Oh, gross. Normally in the morning, usually on the way to work, I'll grab something and its always McDonalds sausage biscuit. One time I went to BK and got 2 of theirs and a large cup of coffee and it was the worst breakfast I've ever had. The sausage was nothing but spice (and this is coming from someone who loves spicy food) in the middle of an extremely dry and flavorless biscuit. I choked both down almost dryly because the coffee they had was so strong I couldnt stomach it, and that was after adding lots of cream and sugar. In fact, it was so strong it gave me diarrhea, which up until that point I couldn't believe coffee could do.
Of course, this could all be BK's fault, as they arent all the same. But ever since, I stick to Mickey D's if I need a quick, sausage fueled breakfast.
Edit: almost forgot, I'm going to a party this weekend (200 guests, no joke, its on a farm with a concert and bonfire and everything.....) and have been told to bring either a side dish or dessert. I want to bring a dessert, but want it to be something pretty simple. Anybody got any ides for me?

Titamisu is always super simple, great to look at and usually goes down a treat. No cooking to boot and it takes around 30 minutes to prepare.
If you're going to make it, opt for good chopped chocolate (at least 70% cocoa) on top instead of powder.

How many people like to grill?
And, to those that do, do you prefer gas or charcoal?
I use strictly gas. And eat only gas grilled food. I've tried charcoal grilled food time and again in life and its a lesson I keep re-learning over and over. Every single bite I've ever had has tasted like either lighter fluid or the charcoal itself, or a mixture of both. Not to mention you have to wait for every for the coals to heat up before you can start cooking.
With my gas grill I can turn it to on, press a button and boom, I have fire. The food cooks much, much quicker than a charcoal grill and when I get done it tastes like food, not the stuff it was cooked on. I'd say, on average, I cook on my grill 4 times a week. Hamburgers, hot dogs, brats, steaks, pork chops.....all of it. Cook it up!
Frosty_86
07-29-2009, 03:45 PM
I use a charcoal and a gas grill but I prefer cooking on a charcoal. With charcoal it pays to be patient. You have to wait until the coals are white before you start cooking, that's why your getting that fuel taste. You also have to wait till the flame dies down before you put the food on the grill because if you don't you'll burn the food and it will taste like the charcoal itself. With Matchlight or any other charcoal that's pre-soaked with lighter fluid you have to white until the charcoal turns white becuase if not the food is asolutely horrendous. I like using a chimney starter, there's no lighter fluid required. Its a little slower than the Matchlight but really I think the food ends up being better. Whenever Im just trying to fix something and eat it, Ill use my gas because it is just so much faster than the charcoal but I still do like the taste of food on a charcoal grill better than on a gas.
I do cook a lot on the grill. I'll cook damn near anything; steaks, chicken, pork chops, hot dogs, brats, burgers, shrimp (Ive never done fish that could be cause Im not a huge fish guy). I would like to try ribs and beer can chicken on the grill. I'll cook steaks any way you want them; rare, medium rare, burnt to a crisp. I also love corn and tomatoes cooked on the grill.
Some seasonings that I like are: Weber's N'Orleans Cajun (very good on chicken, pork chops, and shrimp), Weber's Chicago Steak (great on burgers and steaks), and Durkee's Steak Dust (good on damn near anything especially burgers and chicken although Ive only seen it at Sam's Club). The Jack Daniels marinades are also really good especially the garlic and herb one.
Another thing to try is the Jack Daniels Wood Chips. If using a charcoal take about half the bag and soak the chips in water for bout an hour or so (the directions say 30 but I found this works better) and then after you've spread out the charcoal dump the chips on top of the charcoal. Dont put the food on right after you dump the chips on there, wait till the flames die and you get some good smoke going and then the food on there. It takes a little longer but you will not be disappointed. This is really good with chicken and steaks. I think if you use a grill you need to get a foil tray get the chips and put some water in it and place the tray over the burner. The Jack Daniels Wood Chips are fantastic they're the only wood chips I ever use.

I don't think I could either. I'm already not fond of octopus or squid because it's usually too chewy and doesn't have much flavor. I can only enjoy it as fried calamari with marinara sauce because is usually kills the hard texture.
As for grilling, I love to grill. I can do either gas or charcoal, I have no bias. I think Frosty hit the nail on the head about letting the charcoals turn white (or really bright orange as well). I never had a problem with food tasting like the coals. I'm not biased in what I grill. If you haven't tried fish, I would recommend to put it on some foil because it tends to be too soft and can break apart on the grill. I love grilling carne asada, steaks, and chicken. Once in a while, I'll grill some pork al pastor, which can be quite tasty.

I usually have my spaghetti/linguine with a sauce I make from pancetta, mushrooms, red onions, garlic, dijon mustard, cayenne pepper, creme fraiche, a bay leaf, plenty black pepper...and a generous helping of Parmesan shavings on top. I sometimes throw in a couple of handfuls of spinach at the end too.
Seafood based spaghetti dishes are great but I've never attempted one at home.
I also love a good old herby bolognese with lots of crusty garlic bread.
In my personal opinion you should always mix spaghetti with a sauce before serving. I can never understand people who give you a bowl of dry pasta with a bolognese on top like a steamy fresh cowpat...albeit a tasty one.

Ive made scallop and butter sauce before, but frozen scallops...
And I usually just make a simple sauce with the spaghetti I make, because I made some yesterday, I was thinking of trying something new for a change
What I did was I cooked some hamburger with tomato sauce and seasoned, then put the spaghetti sauce and used oregano, lots of basil, thyme, clove of garlic, slices of yellow onion ( because I really dont like to eat chunks or coarsely chopped onion and I didnt feel like chopping them finely...)....just simple the way I usually make
sometimes Ill make meatballs : hamburger(not a real fatty one tho.. b/c it makes the sauce greasy...and I thnk that fatty hamburger is good for actual hamburgers), oregano, thyme, crackers or breadcrumbs, an egg, lawrys seasoning, garlic salt...uh think thats it
I think Ill try your sauce next time, soon, except the mushrooms, i dont like mushrooms...but the spinach sounds delicious, never had it with spaghetti.
thanks 4 the recipe:)
yeah, I always mix in the sauce after I drain the spaghetti,
if there are any suggestions for the way I make mine i'd appreciate it :D

I'm a big fan of white and red clam sauce over fettucini. The briny flavor of the clam sauce comes through much better in the red sauce.
I hate whole wheat pasta because I don't eat pasta with heavy creamy sauces, so the flavor of the whole wheat interferes with the light sauces I make. Makes me feel miserable when I'm eating it. I don't eat pasta that often anyway, so I can get away with using regular stuff.
And this evening, though not pasta I made Mussels a la provencale. It came out pretty nice, but it'll be a long while before I make it again. VERY time consuming; mussel prep is far to precious.

I'm not entirely sure. I suppose liver is considered a 'paupers meal'...not unlike some of my other favourite dishes such as Corned Beef Hash, Hot Pot and Cottage Pie. I'm a pretty big connoisseur of Italian food. I taught myself how to make spaghetti by rewinding the prison scene in Goodfellas over and over.
I actually make a decent amount of dishes which always come out rather good. I've mastered the marinara sauce. I actually have gone to restaurants and come away disappointed by a chef's preparing. They usually either make the sauce too thin or they over stuff it with garlic and not enough herbs. I love a thick sauce that slathers on the pasta and doesn't sink to the bottom. I love putting mushrooms, garlic, onions, fresh tomatoes, zucchini, carrot, red bell pepper and celery. I like nice little chunks of different vegetables so every bite might be different. I also put red wine in the sauce to give it an extra kick. As far as herbs go, I put lots of basil, oregano, bay leaves and thyme. Salt and pepper is a must and some times some sugar if it needs sweetening. I've been doing it for a while so I eye everything out and don't ever have an exact measurement. So times I'll put more of one thing to see what kind of a difference it'll make.
The best base for sauce is to actually boil tomatoes, onions, and some peppers sprinkled with basil and tomato until it gets very mushy. Then you put that in a blender and you've got home made sauce. It tastes much better than using a can of sauce. If you put paste, it'll give it that red color everybody loves, as well as the wine.
As far as meats, I prefer sausage over beef. If I make meatballs I opt to use ground turkey. It tastes almost identical to beef and less fatty. But Italian sausage if my first pick.
I also make an excellent lasagna, shrimp scampi, ravioli, alfredo and I recently made chicken carbonara and it was extremely delicious. I really love Italian food.

He always made it clear that he didn't mean that as a pejorative. Quite the contrary. When I tell people that I willingly choose the liver option at restaurants I'm generally met with confused stares. Only problem is I can't decide between the regular linguine or the spinach linguine.

I whip up my own take on Carbonara using pancetta, creme fraiche and pecorino or parmesan. My kid is only 18 months old and he loves the dish so the raw egg route just doesn't work for me. I also find that low-fat creme fraiche has a surprisingly good consistency and makes the dish practically guilt-free.
Rigatoni, Tortiglioni or Penne is my pasta of choice. The kid likes Rigatoni because he can put the tubes on his fingers like edible saucy bling...yum, yum.

I like my steak rare to medium rare. If my funds could permit it I would have Chateaubriand every time. I've only had it twice and both times were out of this world. I tend to buy Sirloin steaks because they are a lovely treat but not totally budget busting.
I usually serve steak with boiled new potatoes with some herby butter and steamed green beans and peppercorn sauce...but I ought to mix it up a little.
I've just polished off an indulgent Saturday breakfast consisting of grilled pork sausage and back bacon, napolini tomatoes, granary toast, poached egg and a Birds Eye potato waffle (classy) and lots of black pepper and brown sauce...and a cup of tea of course. I haven't had a breakfast like that in some months...yum, yum.

I actually had a cookout today with a bunch of friends and I made the steaks and they were beyond delicious. Cooked them all about medium rare and it was definitely one of the best meals I've had all year. Great way to end the summer.

I may cookout today. Ill probably take pictures if it happens.
Last night me and my friend made a spaghetti meal we chopped up a few bell peppers and added various spices and Extra Virgin Olive Oil to the mix. I then microwaved some butter and poured it on some bread, added some garlic and powdered cheese to it then baked it. Probably one of the best meals Ive had.

My friend took me and my kid to a lovely, super posh restaurant tonight. I had sea bass, scallops, roasted fennel, spinach, sautéed potatoes and a red bell pepper sauce...it was mindblowing.
The big downside was that the kids menu was totally ridic'. My son ended up having mini pizza and chips because there was very little choice (and he loves rice, pasta, cous cous etc) and he got the most piping hot chips imaginable and ended up getting all upset (read: causing a horrible scene) because he couldn't eat his grub right away.
I find it really awful that even the classiest restaurants have no imagination when it comes to a kids meal. I whip him up hot pitta with tzatziki and cous cous and paprika chicken within about 10 minutes...or chicken wraps with some hidden spicach and cucumber in about 20 minutes or so.
We had an awesome pub lunch at the weekend and Noah's favourite was prawn wrapped in filo and garlic mushrooms...but the classy restaurant offered nothing remotely similar and I just think that's a real shame.

noah's diverse appetite puts my own to shame. i had lettuce in my bbq bacon hamburger union burger this evening which is a big step up for me, only after i carefully removed the purple thing? and the fuck off tomato! i was content with a diet of nuggets and chips till only a few years back, and noah is getting in a strop because he can't have the prestigious food at some posh restaurant! unfortunately my issue's with food were always mental, mama wanted me to try the crazy stuff (greens etc) but to me it just looked weird

Has any schmoe on this board ever try a Pupusa? It's a famous latin american dish that originated from El Salvador. Think a Tortilla except stuffed with different combinations of Cheese, Beef, Chicken, Pork and/or beans. They're one of my favorite treats and they're delicious. If no one has tried them, I encourage every person here to try one the next time they get the chance. Prefreably with Curtido (a variant of coleslaw) and salsa.

I still haven't had a proper cuban, though a more proper one during my visit to Florida, but I should've known better than thinking I could fulfill my lust in a country club.
This was something I was thinking of posting in the "Love" thread, but I figured it would be easier to explain here:
We had some meat that needed to be cooked up, so my wife made me a steak with a side of pork chops.

I love Pupusas. My friend from El Salvador sold them at his shop. I haven't had any in about 5 years though. I ate them with curtido. Very tasty.

Now that's music to my ears. Pupusas are that damn delicious if the place you buy them at, make them well. I've had delicious ones and shitty ones. My favorite is Revuelta, which is usually a mix of Pork and Cheese.

Wotsit Sandwiches anybody?
Infact I love any crisp sandwich.
Had craving for Gregg's sausage rolls lately. Same with their Caramel Doughnuts. Yum Yum.
I go for the traditional simple meals, I'm too lazy to cook or prepare anything too elaborate. So I am usually stuck with fishfingers and chips with beans, or a nice chicken burger in a bun.

Well, it's that special day for Americans... Thanksgiving. It was my job to cook the turkey this year and I think it's turning out rather great. I marinated it in a wine/butter brine with lots of spices for a day. The thing looked purple when I took it out this morning. I'm slow roasting it for a change. I started it off at 500 degrees for an hour to kill any bacteria and to brown it up. And then I drop the temperature to 200 degrees and let it cook longer than usual.
It's not even done yet, but it looks really tasty. I can't wait to have it for dinner. I'll probably post another pic when it's done.

Last night was my first time making a shrimp stew family recipe. I was nervous but I managed to pull off a really great stew with jumbo shrimp in a tomato base soup with lots of vegetables (zucchini, potato, onion, garlic, carrots, peppers). It's always better on the second day.

My soft tacos are pretty fuckin' good I must say.
I start it off by sauteeing some chopped onion and garlic in a little butter adding some salt and pepper. When the onions are translucent I add the meat(ground beef extra lean). When the meat is brown I add tomato sauce, diced tomatoes and green chilis, hot taco seasoning, and chipotles in adobo sauce(which I chop).
I let that reduce and cook for a while.
Then I add half of a bottle of beer(Dos Equis Amber)
Then I heat up some refried beans and spoon some in a thin spread onto a large tortilla(burrito size) and I do the same thing with sour cream. Then I add the meat, then shredded cheddar right on top of it(so it melts), then some sliced jalopenos, more chopped onions, and sliced cherry tomatoes. Then some hot taco sauce and then hot habenero sauce and then I finish it off with more sour cream. Roll it up and I'm set to go!
If I don't drink the beer I add some more to keep the meat moist.
For leftovers, another can of diced tomatoes and green chiles gives the optical illusion of doubling the meat. It works quite well.
