Saw the trailer on E.T. and it looks great. Matt Damon looks HILARIOUS in this in a role unlike anything else he's ever done!

While I did not care for all the orange in the trailer, the film looks excellent. It's nice to see Damon branching out and taking a more humorous role.
Earlier this year, I read the book this film is based on. I knew going in who was playing who, so I got a kick out of imagining Damon, Bakula, and McHale in their roles. In fact, I can easily see why Soderbergh was directing it, as the tone reminded me a lot of OUT OF SIGHT.

same here. Usually when actors gain weight its for something balls-to-wall serious (Clooney, Crowe). Leave it to Damon to gain weight for laughs. This looks great.

Agreed, I think this looks great. I've turned into a Soderbergh fan as of late and I'm now down for pretty much whatever the guy turns out, but this looks especially good. Damon looks fantastic. Makes me think of Burn After Reading a bit.

This movie looks AWESOME! This is why I love movies. Soderbergh at his best. There is no way this film will be bad and disappoint. Matt Damon is going to be awesome!

Neither did I until I read about an advanced screening. Even then, I didn't expect it to be so openly comedic.

It definitely does. In fact, when I was reading the book, I thought first of the Coen brothers, as it struck me as the kind of movie they'd make.
One thing is for certain: this October is going to be a banquet at the cinema. This, Shutter Island, The Road, Where the Wild Things Are...all in the same month.

That's for sure. I'm very excited for those three films.
I saw this preview before Public Enemies. It looks like a fun film. Damon is very talented and it's nice to see Soderbergh do something lighter that isn't Ocean's 14. Clancy Brown is always great as Clancy Brown.

Funny you mention The Coen Bros. because they too have a new movie coming out in October no less. A Serious Man, which is the 1st of the bunch to come out. http://www.joblo.com/upcomingmovies/movies.php?id=3133
Oh and Richard Kelly's The Box. That's for October 31st.
And if you want to count it, the re-release of Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D.
Yeah...Gonna be one hell of a movie month.
I should add The Informant looks pretty funny. I like Soderbergh a lot so I'll definitely be up for giving it a shot if I get the chance.

This looks pretty good. I'm a big Soderbergh fan yet I tend to love his mainstream stuff more than the experimental stuff, and this actually looks like a strange and quirky combination between the two genres. It looks really funny, Damon looks fantastic and my only regret is that this doesn't have a more Soderbergh-esque ensemble cast, with Damon being the only real "name" actor in it. Still, I'm excited. And I agree - October is the new December!

You hit the nail on the head. It definitely feels like Soderbergh decided to combine his two impulses together in one movie. It also functions as a nice tonal midpoint, between heavy dramas like TRAFFIC and straighter comedies like OUT OF SIGHT.
As for the cast, I actually like the approach Soderbergh took. I think he realized that Damon works best when he's the lead, as opposed to part of a larger ensemble (The Departed being a big exception). I also like the fact that he took on lesser-known actors like Scott Bakula and Joel McHale and gave them major roles.
I'm trying to recall a previous October that had so many worthwhile films coming out, and I'm drawing a total blank. For the past 2 years, we've had to wait until November for the really good fall movies, but it seems this year, we might be getting some of the best movies right at the beginning of the season.
BTW, that has me thinking about something else. Does anyone else notice that we never seem to get a great fall and a great summer movie season in the same year. 2008 had a great summer season, but the fall was definitely a disappointment. 2007 and 2006 had great fall movies, but both summers were less than impressive. Can anyone else think of a year in our lifetimes when there's been a great summer and a great fall movie season?
