Modern feats in engineering and construction have always intrigued me, from the Burj Dubai to the the Petronius platform. The pool in the San Alfonso Del Mar resort in Chile, though, enthralls me more than all of them. It is currently my most wanted to visit destination, and I may get to go this winter (it would be summer there).

"The Guinness Book of Records named the vast pool of the Hotel San Alfonso del Mar beside the sea in Chile as the biggest in the world. It is more than 1,000 yards long, covers 20 acres, had a 115ft deep end and holds 66 million gallons of water. It's a kilometer long."

Pretty neat eh?

Pretty cool, but why the hell did they build it next to a beach!!? I'm guessing it's to do with the water for the actual pool, otherwise it makes me laugh at the irony lol.

It's a resort thing. Gives the resort a nice appearance and when you are in the pool facing the ocean it looks as though the two flow together.

What has me confused is the 115ft deep end. What is the point of that? Scuba diving lessons? Haha.

Needless to say, that would be a bitch of a pool to clean.

Seems kind of silly to build it 20 feet from the edge of the ocean. Every time a storm comes through there is going to be massive amount of sand and ocean water in that pool.

Haha, I was actually being semi-serious. I've been to quite a few resorts and I'm always seeing people taking scuba diving lessons in the resort pool before they actually go out in the ocean (good idea if you ask me). It's just that usually the pools aren't very deep, maybe 8 or 9 feet in the deepest areas. 115ft seems a little extreme, but it would sure be good for some solid beginner lessons. :D

*takes note to not make fun of scuba diving in front of Gingy*

That pool is massive. Not much is going on in it though. Seems kind of pointless. I'd rather have a crazy themed pool that's 1/10th the size.

Knowing my luck, the day I go is the one day it's PAKCED.

It's actually in Chile, but with all the crazy stuff Dubai is doing these days, I wouldn't surprised if they unveil one ten times bigger in the next couple of years.

And to all wondering why it's next to the beach - the pool actually uses filtered ocean water, and is always sucking ocean water in while pumping it out.

That pool has fucking sail boats in it? Why? The Ocean is RIGHT THERE! I understand building a giant pool to swim in, but why boats & a little harbor?

Don't most ocean-side hotels have pools? That's been my experience. A pool is nice and clean, while ocean water is pretty nasty.

This thing is crazy. I was surprised it wasn't some Dubia contraption.

115 foot deep end? Is it even safe to dive that deep? Not that most could, but I'm sure some would try.

Plus, you don't have to worry about jellyfish and gillmen.

I want to fuck in that pool.
