Is "The Wire" worth the cash?

I was just wondering if the hbo tv show "The Wire" was worth the money. I hear amazing things about the show and was wondering if they were worth the money. I also hear its the "best show in tv history" and "passes the Sopranos" in every aspect. Plus i'm currently watching "The Shield" right now and often hear that show is very "similar" to it.

So, should I go out and buy and start watching this show?

I don't want to over hype it, because over hyping a show is never good, but The Wire is fantastic. It may take a number of episodes to really love it, but once you get the pace and observe Baltimore in the eyes of the dealers, the police, the politicians, the school kids, the newspaper employees and the dock workers, it works beautifully. As a resident of downtown Baltimore i approve.

Damn, the 1st season was aired on Cinemax Asia the whole month and I COULDN'T WATCH IT just because my little sister is too little for it (and since it's summer now, there's no way that I can watch TV without her wandering around).
