Hey, has anyone else had a shard of calcium grind its way through their ureter? I've had at least 50 kidney stones. Literally. Goddamn.
This thread doesn't serve a purpose. I'm going to be starting a lot of threads that don't serve a purpose.
Yeah, kidney stones.

Dude. 50? Yikes. I had to pass one about six months ago, and that was not fun.

If you have had more than 50 kidney stones there is something seriously wrong with your diet. But I'm gonna assume that's an exaggeration.

I'm 25. Since I turned 18 I've had 26 stones. 24 on the right side, only 2 on the left. 2 were bad enough to send me to the hospital, although only one required surgery.
The first few I had my doctor said "ok this is causing it and this and this so cut them out of your diet." Then I kept getting them. It finally got to the point of where he finally told me "you know what, eat and drink whatever because your kidneys suck."

Fuck, man.
I'd give you one of mine if it wasn't already promised to my dad.
If he goes any time soon, we can be JoBlo's first altruistic donor couple.
For a year my eyes would not get rid of the tiny cysts caused by dirt, leading to a number of cysts that required cutting and draining away. Not the same, but horrible when the body doesn't do its job.
Sympathies to you and the count.

No kidney stones but I've got gallstones. I've had them for awhile but am too much of a pussy to undergo the surgery to take them out. I have other stuff too...nothing fatal, thankfully.

Hooooolllllly.
Getting a kidney stone is one of my greatest fears. I just can't imagine how painful it must be. Then I see that some of you guys have 26..... 50+?! Does it get easier or less painful after a while? Thinking about this seriously makes me weak in the knees, I can't fathom passing one.

I just saw 'Monsters Inside Me' on Animal Planet after watching a clip (on The soup of all places) of some guy intentionally eating parasite-stricken fruit in a third-world country so he would defacate worms--his poop was literally just a bunch of twitching earthworm creatures. The horrors of this thread have me reliving these nightmares of two hours ago.

Well, its not any less painful, but I dont freak out over them anymore. I used to be like "OH GOD ANOTHER STONE". Now its like "great, another stone, hurry the hell up so I can get on with my day."
The last stone I had I was at a fairly big party with friends, drinking it up. All of a sudden I was in a ton of pain and everyone started freaking out so I told everyone to calm down and just get me a ton of water (I didnt want beer for fear of getting drunk, on top of having the stone). I walked around (you cannot sit still when you have a stone), chugged about 4 bottles of water, took a couple massive pisses and was fine after about 2 hours. Everyone thought I was a champion but its really just what I've learned to do.

I'm morbidly curious.... what hurts more - when the stone is rolling around in your ureters/bladder in the hours before it passes, or the passing itself? Are they big enough to be visible?

My sister had gall stones and they got so bad that she collapsed one day on the stairs. She underwent surgery but somehow one of the stones was shattered and her liver stopped draining and eventually began to fail.
She had to have some sort of stent inserted into her liver...and she was genuinely the colour of a ripe banana.
She was in hospital for several months and could have lost her life.
People have a hard time believing her but it's absolutely true.
I fear developing any sort of kidney/gall stones.

A friend of mine's mother had 4 children and several kidney stones. She said the least painful stone was worse than the most painful childbirth.
I seriously can't imagine getting one of these things. I'm paranoid. I need to start drinking more cranberry juice - I hear they help prevent them.

It's odd to explain really. I've had some that I've cut (cutting is when it goes from the kidney to the bladder) that I've barely felt, only to pass out later (pass out is when you piss them out) and go "oh, a stone."
Passing them out, unless they are huge ones, or if they get stuck in your dick (its happened, FUCKING OW), is pretty painless. You unleash a lot of pressure when you piss and it actually just blasts it right out. The worst part for me has always been the cutting process.
My first bout with stones, and my first hospital visit, were both thankfully the worst I've had. I look at it as I got the hardest part out of the way right away. I woke up on a Sunday morning and was fine, but then was quickly in a lot of pain. I had a stabbing pain in my right side and couldn't get comfortable. I chalked it up to back pain seeing as how I have constant back pain thanks to spinal surgery from years ago, but I noticed it was more in my ribs than anywhere. The pain kept getting worse and worse and eventually I threw up. My parents were at church so I was all alone. I would get hot then freezing, on top of throwing up. Seeing as how I hadnt eaten yet that day, I had an empty stomach, and I very quickly started puking stomach acid/bile (worst taste ever). When my parents got home they took me to the hospital where they performed a CATScan to see where the stone was, along with giving me pain medication. The pain went away, thanks to the meds, so they sent me back home because they said the stone was in fact cutting and I would most likely pee it out later.
Bullshit.
When I got home the meds wore off and I was right back to puking. This time not only puking more stomach acid/bile but also the pain meds that were in me. I lied on the floor in a ball and wished for death.
For 4 fucking days.
My dad wanted to take me to the hospital but I kept saying no, convinced the stone would pass any time. Oh how wrong I was. I finally let them take me to my regular doctors office, where I ended up passing out in the exam room. I woke up in the hospital, and was informed that I had 2 massive stones stuck together, connected in the middle. It was essentially a barbell. Both were firmly stuck at the entrance to my bladder. The past 4 days I hadnt eaten a bite of food, and only drank water trying to help it along, and had barely been pissing. I found it odd that I had barely been pissing when the left kidney was fine, and the doctor said I hadnt been peeing a lot because my kidney was backing up into my stomach and I had been puking a combination of "poison" (his words) and, yes, my own piss. I was puking urine. They scheduled me for a surgery and I went in (all the way under, thankfully). They went up my urethra (otherwise known as the hole in your dick) and into my bladder and past that to where the stones were and "blasted" them out.
I had to have a catheter in me for 2 weeks (PAIN) and had to strain my piss for just as long in order to catch pieces of the stones.
I didnt have another stone until exactly (EXACTLY, TO THE DAY) one year later. Same scenario. Thankfully this stone was smaller, and I went home from the hospital only to pass the stone 3 or so hours later.
I've had big stones, little stones, very painful stones, mild stones, stones I could actually hear hit the toilet (*tink*), stones I felt come out but couldnt see......yeah, like I mentioned earlier, my kidneys (mainly my right one) fucking suck.
Edit for a side note: thanks to puking and not eating for 4 days, I lost almost 20lbs that week. No joke. It was pure hell but man, best diet ever.

Oh, Jackson...we're blood brothers. Basically, Jackson explained my whole experience with stones, although it seems that I've had more (50 was no exaggeration). It doesn't actually hurt coming out of your cock. Most of them aren't visible to the naked eye. All of mine have been on the left side, presumably because of my scoliosis (I, too, have had spinal surgery).
When you've had as many as we've had, they become less of an ordeal each time, unless you're forced to go to the hospital. When I visited the hospital, they gave me morphine, and it didn't do much to alleviate the pain. It was so intense, I could barely breathe. I'm not sure if walking helps or not. I can't walk (that's another thread in and of itself).
Jackson, did they prescribe Flomax for you? The next time you have a major recurrence, request Flomax. It relaxes the ureter. The pain comes from when the ureter spasms (I'm talking about the tube that connects the kidney to the bladder). Walking might actually make the pain worse. Your body needs to be as relaxed as possible. My first instinct is always to apply pressure to my stomach, but I think I'm better off not fucking with it.
With regards to diets, you're supposed to drink oceans of water, which makes me feel miserable. It's kind of a lose/lose situation.

I had NO IDEA someone could have THAT MANY kidney stones! That's scary and it is also one of my fears. I drink more water than any human probably should, lol. I hope I never have to go through that.
I have a friend who has had a few kidney stones that were so painful, she said giving birth to her daughter the natural way was "like nothing." Man...

My doctor has only told me to drink more water. I do try to avoid calcium, but I almost can't. I have weak bones, so I can't get rid of calcium altogether. I don't know what else to do.
Lotis

I'm no doctor. I've simply heard anecdotes of people having success by limiting the amount & type of proteins they eat along with avoiding high-oxalate foods like chocolate; taking supplements like B6 and magnesium citrate, and home remedies of adding apple cider vinegar (not distilled vinegar) to their water intake.
Thankfully, I've not had kidney stones so I can't say from personal experience. It's my (uneducated) guess that if there are some foods that tend to aggravate a condition, then there are foods that tend to minimize or prevent it from recurring.

I know this has nothing to do with kidney stones but it does have to do with urinary tract and extreme pain, Ill share my story.
I went to the movies one day for the massive LOTR movie marathons which were slammed packed, I was afraid someone would take my seat so I didn't go to the bathroom for all 3 movies 2 extended cuts.
StarWipe two months later I'm using the bathroom at school and I noticed a weird throbbing when I peed. No biggie I figured I had a simple urinary tract infection but the symptoms continued so I went to the E.R. and had the doctor confirm it.
Little did the doctor know said Urinary Tract Infection had spread to my testicles and worsened into Epididymitis, the next day or two my testes being over inflamed grew to the size of about 2 giant grapefruits. I couldn't even walk and the pain well the pain felt like I was being kicked in the junk 24.7 by someone wearing steel toed boots. I was worried so I showed my mom how swollen I was and she screamed out "OH HOLY SHIT!!!"
I sat in the hospital for a month still swollen. :( . So the moral of the story, no matter what you miss in a movie, take a piss.

I don't know if this is the exact same thing, but my friend was told to go home and get some things because they were going to have to remove his left testicle. He had only gone to his GP to report that his bladder was painfully sore ad he was having problems passing water. Five hours later he was crying all the way to his home to gather up some belongings.
Long story short, however, is that when he got back to the hospital it was too late for surgery and he was given tablets to help him cope with the pain. When they woke him the next day, poor fella burst into tears when they said that the swelling had subsided and he would no longer need a operation.
He danced a jig.

Yeah, kidney stones.
Yes, I had to pass 6 in about 1 1/2 months because they'd been building in my kidney and I was placed on a blood pressure medicine with hydrochlorothiazide in it -- that causes stones to break apart and pass. Coupled with all of a sudden drinking a lot of water, they started to move all at once, and like crazy. The largest one I passed was 7mm.
Aren't you taking some medications yourself? Am I remembering correctly and you are pretty well medicated? I'm not understanding why your doctor's only course of action is to drink more water. Are you seeing a urologist? There's a lot of things that break down stones, as simple as lemonade, but of course some things like lemonade cause certain meds to not work as well, so your doctor would know.
I'm just surprised your treatment plan is essentially to deal with it. Something isn't making sense there, because stones are avoidable to some extent - it's hard to imagine that after 50 stones they haven't changed anything.
For me, passing them through the urethra wasn't so bad. It was when they passed through the kidney into the bladder that was the worst (through the ureter). When they are in my bladder, it's very, very uncomfortable - like feeling like I had to pee all the time. By far though, the worst was when they move into my bladder. That was the child birth feeling.

Thanks. It's frustrating because I've seen several different physicians about stones (including a urologist), and no one has ever mentioned a medicine that prevents calcium or uric acid stones.
Bubba, my doctor has never said anything about eating certain foods or drinking lemonade (I've never heard that before). I've seen a urologist, and he was completely useless. They do know all of the pills I take. I've even been to a pain clinic. I have pain for several different reasons, but all they did was prescribe painkillers.
One doctor did mention a lithotripsy. The problem is, I wouldn't be able to get into a tub or onto a flat surface, unless they knocked me out. When I went to the ER, surgery was never mentioned as an option.

They can break them apart with sound waves too, and apparently that's a cinch with few after effects.
I'm thinking there is something related to why ever you are on so many different pain meds that's preventing them from prescribing something like hydrochlorothiazide to keep you from forming stones. If you've been to several, at least one would have mentioned it.
If you are only on pain killers, I'd recommend trying to drink lemonade more often, maybe like 2 - 3 glasses a day or more. I swear that's what made my final four as tolerable as they were. I was drinking about a quart a day. This was something I had researched prior to seeing a urologist, and then he also suggested this without me mentioning I'd already been doing it.

Ive never had kidney stones but Ive got a friend who had em last year. The poor guy was in so much pain. He didnt end up passing them he had to end up having surgery.
My mom had galstones actually round the same time and she had surgery and she was down for almost a week afterwards.
I work with a guy who was talking to me yesterday about having kidney stones and he said when he passed them he felt like he was going to rip the rail from the wall in his bathroom he was in so much pain. He had to that like five times and said they sounded like little BBs hitting the toilet when they came out.
Ive heard that people who drink a lot of diet soda and Gatorade (which my mom and friend both do) are more likely to get kidney stones and galstones. I dont know if thats true or not and apparently having a beer a day actually helps you from getting them

Guess what I did today? I had to push a stone through my dickhole without any urine behind it. You see, a stone has been jangling around in my bladder for three days, and as I was taking a leak this morning, I sensed that it was trying to come out. Unfortunately, I wasn't pissing "full blast," so the stone got stuck near the front of my penis. It was...painful. So I had to pass it "manually." There was one big chunk and two smaller shards.
Never had that happen before. It was an interesting experience.

I have had a torted teste http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Testicular_torsion a couple of years ago which was the most uncomfortable exprience I 've ever had. Couldn't walk straight for a month after surgery.
On the plus side they did give me a supply of morphine pills for the pain which was fun.
