I've been reading up on this movie via Awards Daily and I've been pretty interested. It's a film starring Gabourey Sidibe and Mo'Nique and produced by Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey.
While many may not like Perry around here, don't let this turn you off just yet Very strong reviews coming out of Sundance and Cannes have been saying it's a pretty great film with Oscar talk already surrounding it. It even got a standing-O once credits rolled at the Cannes screening. Hell, there's even rumblings of Oscar for Mo'Nique of all actors...

I hate to say this, really I do, but this looks absolutely terrible.
I have Type 2 diabetes just from watching the trailer. I fear cardiac arrest if I try to sit through the film.
It reminded me, incidentally, of a Sundance Workshop attempt at mutating the tone of Half-Nelson with the saccharine hogwash of Oprah Winfrey's latest book recommendation.
Basically, if Oprah recommends a book, chances are slim that it has any redeeming qualities.
And Mariah Carey can fuck right off. Right. Off!

Saw this at Sundance. Its a harrowing and incredibly depressing film that manages to be engaging and heartfelt. Monique is surprisingly good as a monster of a mother and the lead actress is quite good as well. Its unrelentingly grim but its a great film.

I've heard great things about it, but I'm still a bit skeptical. There were bits of the trailer that made it look really good, then there were some downright cringe-worthy moments and the dreadful background music certainly didn't help.

I really have a hard time liking most movies that are simply about how miserable a life the main character leads. At least add something unique to the mix if you're going to make one. This looks like every scene is asking the audience, "Isn't this sad?"
I'm curious but why is the movie called Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire?
It's even on the IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0929632/
It makes it look even more stupid.

The title on the poster is Precious, there's been some confusion over what the actual title is so it could just be a mistake. I'm assuming that the movie will just be called Precious.
Also I was more on Reigh's side with this but I've been seeing more and more skeptics come out and praise it. And I wouldn't place this as some sort of Oprah cry fest either, I believe that her and Tyler Perry threw their names on it after its big response at Sundance. Plus I remember reading that some critics thought it could receive an NC-17 which doesn't sound very Oprah friendly at all.

I pretty much lifted the title off the IMDB page but I can't imagine they would actually keep that subtitle when it releases in November.
I too was pretty skeptical about it but a number of critics came out and praised the hell out of it. I haven't heard that bit about the possible NC-17 rating but that would certainly be interesting if it got close to it.
