View Full Version : Other Websites You Frequent?

QUENTIN

So, besides JoBlo.com and its related subsections, what websites do you regularly visit?

Beyond stuff like gmail, google, and facebook, I more or less daily check Glenn Greenwald at Salon.com (http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/), rawstory.com, Alternet (http://www.alternet.org) and Democracy Now (http://www.democracynow.org/) for news and commentary. Less frequently, but still pretty regularly I check out Dan Froomkin's White House Watch (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/white-house-watch/), Blog of Rights (http://blog.aclu.org/), Crooks and Liars (http://crooksandliars.com/), Firedoglake (http://firedoglake.com/), Digby's Hullabaloo (http://www.digbysblog.blogspot.com/), Atrios's Eschatonblog (http://www.eschatonblog.com/), The Brad Blog (http://www.bradblog.com/), Noam Chomsky's articles (http://www.chomsky.info/articles.htm), and Andrew Sullivan at the Atlantic (http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/) for the same. Factcheck (http://factcheck.org/), Same Facts (http://www.samefacts.com/) and Media Matters (http://mediamatters.com/) serve as a check on all of the above. I.F. Stone's archives (http://www.ifstone.org/) are great for news reports from the past and I'll frequently head there for research.

For movie discussion and commentary, at least once a week I check Roger Ebert's site (http://www.rogerebert.com) (his journal (http://blogs.suntimes.com/ebert/2009/07/not_how_the_army_would_fight_aliens.html) is at least as good as his film criticism and inspires great comments too) and his site editor/blogger Jim Emerson's Scanners blog (http://blogs.suntimes.com/scanners/). James Berardinelli at Reelviews (http://www.reelviews.net/movies.php) is one of my other favorite net critics. The absolutely invaluable The House Next Door (http://www.thehousenextdooronline.com/) has probably become my favorite film site, it features the most consistently articulate and incisive commentary from a variety of smart and knowledgeable film buffs on a wide range of topics and similarly gets great comments. I'd highly recommend it to most schmoes. I check Metacritic (www.metacritic.com) too each week to see what looks good, I like it more than Rotten Tomatoes because it quantifies what each critic thought beyond a simple recommended/not recommended. IMDb (imdb.com) is obviously the go-to reference site for information on a movie.

On the filmmaking side, I'm a regular visitor of Movie Maker (http://www.moviemaker.com/) and a member at Student Films (http://studentfilms.com/) and Trigger Street (http://www.triggerstreet.com/gyrobase/index) for general filmmaking stuff, check out Terry Rossio's excellent Wordplayer (http://www.wordplayer.com/) and John August's screenwriting blog (http://johnaugust.com/) for screenwriting advice and articles,, and The Art of The Guillotine (http://www.artoftheguillotine.com/)for editing tips and techniques.

Simply Scripts (http://www.simplyscripts.com/movie.html)is my preferred place to go to read screenplays online.

Under miscellaneous, I can hardly get online without checking something out on Wikipedia (wikipedia.org), which invariably leads to further clicks, it's practically addicting. They may not be very thorough, but they're surprisingly accurate considering. I use Hulu (www.hulu.com) more or less exclusively to watch the 4 TV shows I follow (Daily Show, Colbert, 30 Rock, and The Office) since I don't have cable, it's definitely the best quality/least hassle streaming video site I've found. And The Onion (theonion.com) and Texts From Last Night (http://www.textsfromlastnight.com/) are some regular sources of humor. The Rotten Library (http://www.rotten.com/library/) is funny, informative, and surprisingly well-researched. Snopes (www.snopes.com)is a fun rumor-debunker. Imeem (www.imeem.com) is the best place I've found to listen to music online, it has the vast majority of what I'm looking for and you can make your own playlists, Pandora (www.pandora.com) is great too to put on shuffle and hear stuff similar to what you're looking for, and of course Youtube (Youtube.com) is a standard for all kinds of random videos online.

What about you, where else do you go, what would you recommend?

That is really about it besides joblo.com. I quit looking at porn so that knocked out like another 10 sites I used to regularly visit. Besides the ones listed above I do not have much time to visit a site regularly and even the ones above I do not his all the time.

After checking my e-mail, I have a basic morning batch of websites, which are Fark, Democracy Now, Wired Science, and The Consumerist.

The "name" news websites are largely extensions of their equally shitty TV coverage, but I'll still visit CNN.com and others from time to time. I've come to stomach NPR more, because while their coverage leaves a lot to be desired, there is less stupid bullshit there.

When it comes to the internet, what really makes it a worthwhile thing, is the breadth of information that you can take in, and two of my favorite websites are sites like The Straight Dope and Listverse, for doses of good and random info.

For film-related things, apart from JoBlo, I visit Twitch, In Contention, The Playlist regularly, and IMDb, for quick info. Also, I listen to KCRW's The Treatment and go to Charlie Rose's website, for interviews.

For music, I also go to Imeem, but I spend as much if not more time at Pandora. For music news, the only places I really go are the NPR music page and a small blog called Gorilla vs. Bear.

I've yet to find a particularly good site for literature, or books in general. I go to Biblio often when I've got something out-of-print I want.

My #1 site for when I've got nothing new to read, no movies to watch, nothing on television, is Internet Archive, which is fun to dig through. I also go to Wikipedia and just click around, but when it comes to actually getting quick questions answered, I've begun to use Wolfram Alpha recently.

I love threads like this, I started going to Democracy Now because of a thread a while back in the Politics area where I'm pretty sure it was you who listed it as a good source of news, and indeed it is.

I'm currently frequenting http://www.oneandother.co.uk/, a live art project - or a living monument if you will - where every hour a member of the British public is given 60 minutes on a plinth in Trafalger Square, London to do/say whatever they wish. It will continue for 100 days and there will be 2400 participants in total.

It's been a mixed bag thus far.

I've already come upon a solid handful of sites that I may now frequent. Kudos to QUENTIN.

Much has been posted about where to get our news and commentary, and I typically only frequent The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. The WSJ, specifically, has some incredible blogs like Numbers Guy (http://blogs.wsj.com/numbersguy/) and The Daily Fix (http://blogs.wsj.com/dailyfix/). Also, my fellow numbers-oriented schmoes are indebted to Nate Silver at FiveThirtyEight (http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/).

I'm a technical football geek, and I stand firm that the best place on the web for genuine football fans is Chris Brown's Smart Football (http://smartfootball.blogspot.com/). Additionally, check Trojan Football Analysis (http://www.trojanfootballanalysis.com/wp/wordpress/) or Coach Huey's (http://www.coachhuey.com/) for more of the wholesome strategic side of football, and Dr. Saturday (http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/blog/dr_saturday), Every Day Should Be Saturday (http://www.everydayshouldbesaturday.com/), Pro Football Talk (http://www.profootballtalk.com/) (recently purchased by NBC), and College Football Talk (http://www.collegefootballtalk.com) for a more everyday, informative grasp of the greatest game in the world.

As for film, I check out the typical IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, JoBlo, etc., but I highly recommened the growing site about classic film, The Auteurs (http://www.theauteurs.com/). I'll let everyone explore on their delightful own.

I'm a lover of the rap underground, and get a lot of buzz at UGHH (http://www.undergroundhiphop.com/).

Finally, as a cadet, nigh-mandatory reading is the AF Link (http://www.af.mil/). I "frequent" a good deal more, none of which would be foreign to anyone.

Hhahahahaha, funniest thing you have ever posted on this site. Fox News is geared towards the Republican side of things. They will diss any other side that disagrees with them. I like to go to as many news sites to get as many views as possible, then I can make my own judgement. Everyone has a different view on things. Just going by what Fox News says is laughable. From your posts on the political forums, this does make a lot of sense. Open mind anyone?

You couldn't tell, from his posts on the politics forums, that he was being excessively facetious?

Anyway, I found another great one recently that's been cracking me up and is great for film fans:

http://www.the-editing-room.com/

It abridges scripts into humorous, mostly more accurate, descriptions of the movies.

From The Dark Knight Abridged ***SPOILERS***

INT. CHRISTIAN BALE’S PENTHOUSE

HEATH and CHRISTIAN fight, and somehow HEATH is able to hold his own against a guy with NINJA TRAINING. HEATH throws MAGGIE out of a window.

CHRISTIAN grabs her in midair, allowing MAGGIE to avoid landing on the PAVEMENT by landing safely on a CAR instead.

MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL

Thanks for catching me, but how are we going to resolve the issue of Heath still terrorizing your party guests upstairs?

BAT-BALE

Maybe if we awkwardly cut to the next scene, nobody will notice that we accidentally lost some pages of the screenplay.

CUT TO:

EXT. CHICAGO STREETS

The police are holding a funeral for the DEAD COMMISSIONER in the most logical location: directly in the middle of 4 abandoned high-rise buildings with lots of windows. The MAYOR gives a eulogy while wearing a DISTRACTING AMOUNT OF EYELINER.

CHRISTIAN BALE uses MAGIC to pull fingerprints off a nonexistent bullet and winds up getting to the FUNERAL just in time to see HEATH LEDGER attempt to shoot the unprotected MAYOR, miss, and somehow hit GARY OLDMAN instead.

AARON ECKHART

(oh phone)

Maggie, Gary Oldman has just been shot.

MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL

I’m sure he’s fine, he’s not even commissioner yet. We’re not supposed to actually be worried that he might be dead, are we?

AARON ECKHART

Nonetheless, I’m concerned for your safety. Who can we trust?

MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL

I can go to Christian Bale’s penthouse. It’s the safest place in Chicago right now.

AARON ECKHART

The place where I almost got killed by Heath Ledger and you got thrown out of a window? Maybe you should hide on some subway tracks instead.

HEATH LEDGER

(on television)

Starting today, I’m going to kill innocent people until Batman reveals his secret identity. This plan is sure to work, since Americans are generally so willing to negotiate with terrorists.

CHRISTIAN BALE

I’ll never give into this terrorist’s demands!

(pause)

Nevermind, I quit. Play the sad music while I throw everything in the garbage, Michael. I am Batman no more.

MICHAEL CAINE

Subtle. Did you want to go kiss Kirsten Dunst upside-down in the rain, too?

AARON ECKHART holds a plot-explaining press conference, a scene that is quickly becoming a staple of the “Comic Book Movie About A Millionaire Playboy That Uses Technology To Build A Suit That Enables Him To Fight Evildoers” genre.

As much as it kills me to sort of defend The Heart Collector, I have to do it. Fox news does tend to be leaning right, but it is more center than most other news sites or networks. Like Shoe says, it is not smart to only view one site though. You should read from many different sources, but if fox is your main one, cool.

Here is something that is interesting and you can draw your own conclusions. I am posting this just to show you who owns what networks. Please do not start debating the content.

As much as it kills me to sort of defend The Heart Collector, I have to do it. Fox news does tend to be leaning right, but it is more center than most other news sites or networks. Like Shoe says, it is not smart to only view one site though. You should read from many different sources, but if fox is your main one, cool.

QUENTIN, it makes a lot of sense from his posts. I just assumed he was just voicing his opinion.

Abbie, when I watch Fox News, the majority of the people tend to be leaning a lot to the right. I tend to watch as many different news sources because everyone has an opinion. I watched Glen Beck a few nights ago, and he is all crazy about Sarah Palin. Sorry Glen, she is not that great. She has faults like everyone else, and there is a reason people voted Obama over McCain. I know many McCain supporters who voted Obama because of her, others went the Independent route.

But, to stay on topic and not gear towards politics, I have been visiting the Official Halloween Message Board more. Just curious to see what the Rob Zombie fans are saying, always fun to read those comments.

I'm sorry but anyone who claims Fox News far over the line into being right, then I don't know what news you're watching.

FOX news cable is center. Foxnews.com is center Fox network channel nightly news is all over the place.

Fox News Personalities totally are right. Bill OReilly tries to be center and fair, but he is mostly right. Beck is funny, but right.

I thought you meant only the .com site, not tv.

I guess what I meant is that, he consistently and uniformly shows nothing but disdain for the American right and the types of views espoused by Fox News, so I'd think one would assume the opposite based on his posting. I'm positive he was being sarcastic, which is his MO.

Fox is certainly a mouthpiece of the far right, I think that's very hard to dispute and is as close to a universally accepted truism as these things get.

Something I forgot to ask that relates to this thread:

Does anyone here have their own blog, movie-related or otherwise?

After reading this whole thread I am shocked.

Has nobody else heard of www.criticker.com ?

You can rate movies and it finds others that match your taste as well as predicts what you will rate each movie from 0-100. Obviously, the more you rate, the more accurate it gets for you.

You will also find those who rate movies the closest to your own. When I first went on there, I rated 1200 films in 24 hours.

Be warned: although it does have a fairly complete listing of films, they will repeat after the first 500 or so. You may have to specify genre and from what year to what year.

Have fun. It can become quite addicting.
