View Full Version : Ridley Scott's Robin Hood

I'm really, really looking forward to this. It has the same budget as Kingdom of Heaven, the most expensive Scott film made yet (130 million) but unlike Kingdom of Heaven, it doesn't have executive blow hards who will cut it up for the theatrical release.
The cast is absolutely great too
Russell Crowe
Cat Blanchett
Matthew Macfadyen
Mark Strong
Kevin Durand
William Hurt
Danny Huston
Scott Grimes
Eileen Atkins
Can't wait to see how it shapes up

I still wish they would have done it from the sherrifs perspective, just to see a new take on it, but I still wanna check this out. That is a great cast.
And unlike Kingdom of Heaven, Orlando Bloom won't be able to ruin this.

This, Inception, and Iron Man 2 are my most anticipated films for next summer. This easily has the best cast of any Ridley film yet. Plus, the production photos suggest that Ridley is going the gritty, hardcore epic route.
My only question is: who should do the score?
I'm also pleased that Universal is taking a hands-off approach and letting Ridley do his thing. I guess they saw what happened with Kingdom of Heaven, they rightly decided to leave Ridley alone. Oh, and about those rumors of a Ridley-Russell feud, they have always been that way. The feuds on the GLADIATOR set were a noted source of tabloid fodder, and yet the film was a smashing success. It's just the way the two of them work.

I've always been a fan of the Robin Hood story . . . Errol Flynn's and Costner's being my two faves thus far.
I am looking forward to this movie because of the crew and cast involved.

The international trailer is still up on the main site.
Now THIS is the Ridley and Russell combo I remember. Looks great to me.
I can't help but think that AMPAS jumped the gun by making 2009 the first year for ten best pic noms, when 2010 looks WAY better.
Now, all we need are those Inception and Iron Man trailers and I'll be set, trailer-wise, for next summer's big movies.

I don't know. I'm still excited about this movie but I didn't care much for this teaser.
If it weren't for the title and if I knew nothing about this movie, I never would have guessed this to be a Robin Hood movie. And that's not a positive to me.

The film will probably have a "Gladiator" theme to it (considering who's behind it), but I think a lot of that is marketing. It's obvious they're trying to appeal to that crowd (notice it was the only flick of Scott's mentioned), so I'm not too worried yet. In fact, I thought the trailer was pretty kick ass! Stoked to see Scott and Crowe back in action.

From the looks of it i think it'll be a really great film. It looks beautiful and has the Scott "rooted epic" seal of approval. Plus, lets face it, Crowe is so much better than Orlando Bloom. Not to mention the rest of the cast.
Though like Inglourious Basterds and so many films in the past few years, the marketing is shobby and nearly makes it un-appealing.

If they had stuck with the original conceit of the movie, that Robin Hood is the bad guy and the Sheriff of Nottingham is the good guy, then that would have been a cool new angle for the story.
Then they changed it to something much more bizarre and was actually going to have Russell Crowe play both Nottingham AND Robin Hood.
And then it changed to what the movie is now, just another traditional telling of the story.
I was always much more interested in this movie when it was called Nottingham like it was originally.

I agree that the original concept would have been more interesting, BUT it would probably have gotten just as much flak for changing the story as this one gets for maintaining it. The talk about Russell playing both Robin and the Sheriff was never confirmed by either Russell or Ridley, so I'm inclined to think that was just a rumor.
Personally, I wish they would have included some dialogue just to give a more complete picture.

Ridley and Russ are going for a harsher, more historically authentic look with this--which I am totally in favor of. Plus, as the story goes, Robin did serve in the Crusades before becoming a geurilla fighter.
I suspect we'll get a better picture with the next trailer, either with The Wolf Man in Feburary or Clash of the Titans in March.
With this, Shutter Island, Iron Man 2, Inception, Clash of the Titans, and Alice in Wonderland, the first half of next year looks excellent.

It's shit marketing already. the first two trailers are making it seem like this balls out action film, and it is probably a drama mixed with some action. Seems like the marketing is fucking it up a little bit with just showcasing the action parts of it. but it is being released in a summer month, so maybe they are appealing to the I LOVE EPIC FIGHTS crowd.
Trailers regardless, I love how the film looks, and that last shot in the trailer just blows my mind at how great and bad ass Rusell Crowe looks.

The UK trailer is indeed better and gives us more of an idea of a plot and not just a bunch of guys in a really cool fight scene with rock music for extra awesomeness. I guess I'm pretty split on this one - It's Ridley, it's Crowe, it's Blanchett, it's an historical epic with big battles and inspirational speeches - but then again, it's Robin Hood, probably one of the most told and re-told stories in the history of film. And I totally agree with ilovemovies in that the original concept for this movie - to have Hood be the bad guy and Nottingham the protagonist - would have provided a much-needed fresh angle to the story that the current direction they took it in, which is quite standard.
Still, this looks awesome and well-directed and entertaining, so I'll definitely be checking it out.

Well, let's look at the evidence. The American trailers for both Robin Hood and Green Zone are action-packed adrenaline-fests that clearly put the emphasis on the action set-pieces, while the UK trailers for both films put more emphasis on the plot, the characters, etc. Seems to me like Universal just really know what caters to what mass audience... ;)

I'm just not getting the Gladiator vibe from this: Kingdom of Heaven was good, but not great, and I'm getting more of that vibe than the vibe from Scott's masterpiece. Furthermore, I'm REALLY afraid that this movie is going to fail at the box office: Again, I really hope this isn't true and that Scott and Crowe will have another success on their hands, but this material has never proven itself exactly popular, and with more "modern" films such as Iron Man 2 and Inception coming out this summer, I'm afraid that Robin Hood might get lost in the shuffle. I hope not, but I have a bad feeling...

I was expecting (and hoping for) an R-rating, not a PG-13. I don't remember watching a single Ridley Scott-directed action-adventure or sci-fi epic that wasn't rated R. Scott and PG-13 isn't a good combination...unless it's a film like Matchstick Men, which is neither an action-adventure epic nor a sci-fi epic, obviously.

I really thought Ridley Scott was gonna bring us a gritty/dark/brutal take on Robin Hood. Apparently I was wrong. I imagine the film was intended to be R, but due to a budget that I expect ended up being a bit higher than expected, they had to edit to a PG-13. It's not really that hard of a task, because films like these can get away with PG-13 ratings with a little bit of editing. You can still show decapitations, skull bashing, and even a bit of blood spurting with a PG-13 rating. I'm still disappointed with the PG-13, but what can ya do? I was commenting on MFC how Ridley has made two movies about the Crusades almost back-to-back; Kingdom of Heaven, which ends with King Richard heading into Jerusalem, and Robin Hood, which typically ends with Richard returning from Jerusalem. I wondered, wouldn't it be cool if he bridged the two films by having the same actor as King Richard? Of course he didn't, but being a big fan of the director's cut of KoH, I'd have geeked out.

Normally, you and I are on the same wavelength, but I feel you are way offbase. None of the other RH films had the tougher, more grounded vibe this one has. Heck, I could never see Errol Flynn or Kevin Costner as medieval geurilla fighters. As for the original idea, I think Russell and Ridley abandoned it when they read that script (before Helgeland came on board) and saw how bad it was. I had read some excerpts a while back and was not impressed. While I too would have liked to see things from the Sheriff's POV (I don't think though that Robin was ever designated as the villain, just the antagonist), that ship has long since sailed.
BTW, have you ever seen the Director's Cut for Kingdom of Heaven? If you haven't, I would rent it ASAP, because it is so much better than the theatrical version.

While I was surprised by the rating, I'm not bothered at all. I figured something like this would happen, given the budget. Plus, LOTR and TDK have showed that you can get away with A LOT in a PG-13. I think the only things they can't show are sustained blood spurting and up-close body part removal.
Did I miss something? The trailer was 40 seconds long and other than the token trailer line "I delcare him an OutLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!" and reminding us that Robin is apparently his father's son, there was nothing special about it at all.
Then you apparently haven't seen the new trailer, which has way more.
I would have liked that too, especially since this story is set in 1191 (right after KoH) but alas, the actor was busy preparing for his role as Jorah Mormont for HBO's Song of Ice and Fire.

Personally I'm a big fan of filmmakers returning to normal considering we live in a world now where many films are just trying too hard.
I'm inclined to agree. I'm fine with certain directors taking risks and experimenting with either new technologies (Avatar) or challenging storylines (Inception), but just because some directors can pull it off doesn't mean everyone should do it.
"It looks like Braveheart! No, wait... It looks like GLADIATOR! No... WAIT! IT LOOKS LIKE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN!"
I love it when people's complaints sound more like compliments. Can't fuckin' wait for this movie, PG-13 or not.
Same here! :D The new trailer cemented my excitement for this. It also helps that they threw in Max von Sydow (whom I did not know would be in this).
