Russell Crowe is in the early stages of negotiations to reprise the role of Jack Aubrey as a British sea captain in a new movie version from the "Master and Commander" series of novels. Crowe told The Associated Press on Friday that a script based mostly on the eleventh novel of Patrick O'Brian's 20-novel series, "The Reverse of the Medal," had been written, but that discussions were at a very early stage.

"There's still a long way to go," he told AP at a cricket match between England and Australia in London. He said talks had been taking place with the owner of the rights to the novels. Crowe gave no indication of when filming could start but said it was one of a number of projects he is considering.

I was going to say "I'm surprised they are making another one, didn't the first receive poor reviews and do poorly at the box office?"

But after a quick search I realized it has an 85% at Rotten Tomato and it made 212 million dollars worldwide! Pretty surprised at both those numbers.

I loved Master and Commander so I'd love to see a 2nd movie get made.

The real question to ask (Besides of Crowe's return) is if Peter Weir would return...?

Despite all the critical acclaim, I'm surprised how little people liked it. At least of all my friends, I know almost no one else who thinks the film is great - the biggest complaint I hear is that it's boring.

One thing is for certain though - I think Master & Commander has to be watched on a big screen and with a good surround sound system to be fully appreciated. I was quite literally dragged to see it in theatres and found myself completely immersed - I felt like I was at sea for the duration of the film. I just got sucked in like very few movie experiences I've had. It is like the anti-Pirates of the Caribbean (which I love) in that it gives you the most realistic seafaring experience I imagine possible.

And on a strictly technical standpoint, I don't think it can be argued that this movie is done poorly or even only decently - the directing, editing, cinematography, vfx, sound editing, sound mixing are all some of the most masterful I've seen in the past several years. The VFX are ridiculously seamless like few other films I've seen and the sound mix is my favorite sound mix of any film I've seen yet - it shows off the surround sound system like few other films do (the only film that comes close so far for me is Return of the King which won the Oscar for sound mixing over M&C though M&C won sound editing).

I would be very much down for another one - I don't necessarily need another one as the first stands on its own, but I would go see another one if it came out. Hopefully Weir will be back as well.

Absolutely spot-on, word-for-word what I wanted to say. In fact, I don't know how many of my friends have even SEEN the film, much less liked it, but I myself thought it was totally thrilling and absolutely fantastic filmmaking; I own it on DVD even (they released a really well-done special collector's edition DVD boxed set) and it was one of my favourite movies from 2003. I am excited for a sequel, especially if the technical crew and Weir return.

Fucking phenomenal film. Absolute masterpiece. Peter Jackson should give all his '04 statues to Peter Weir. Jaw dropping accomplishment.

Not sure what else I can say. I'm a fan.

I'm also a huge fan of "Master and Commander". I was absolutely floored when I first saw it, and if it weren't for Return of the King, it defininitely could've been the epic of 2003.

I don't know how successful a second one will be, but if Weir is involved (though isn't he involved with a project right now), and of course...Crowe reprising the role - I'm totally there!

I have the 2 dsic set. And I watch the movie at least once each and every 6 months. There aren't enough films like this.

Oddly, I never get bored of it. Even the music score is brilliant! I would love another one.

Fantastic movie, I'm not sure I approve of a sequel. Perhaps a spirtual sequel, same cast perhaps a different war/characters.

I think he could be persuaded to return. From what I gleaned from the DVD documentaries, he clearly enjoyed making it.

I wouldn't go that far. While ROTK remains my favorite film of 2003, Master and Commander is right behind it at #3 (Mystic River holds the #2 slot).

Same cast definitely, especially Paul Bettany. He and Crowe made for an excellent duo. Not sure about a different war, though. The book series, if my understanding is correct, were set entirely in the Napoleonic Era (1795-1815).
