View Full Version : Explination for Watchmen December release?

I did a search to see if there was a topic elsewhere, but didn't find anything so apologies if this is a reiteration.

I am drooling to buy the Amazon exclusive blu-ray set on the 21st...that is until I discovered that a 5 disc super extended set will be released in December. I was reading that the "Tales of the Black Freighter" animated story is woven into the watchmen movie too, which is from what I gather, the 'big deal'.

I know nothing of the black freighter story, and was wondering, for people that are knowledgeable to the complete watchmen story, if this december set is worth the wait. I haven't seen the Black Freighter animated film, and was wondering if it would make the story of the Watchmen movie better..? Are these stories relevant to one another? And most important (because I loved the watchmen movie), will the two looks of the real film and the animated film work well together?

Thanks guys.

I'm no Watchmen expert but I do know that the 5-Discer coming in Dec. has essentially everything they made/filmed for the film in it. Practically nothing's left out. If your a hardcore fan get it.

Just got back home with the DVD and it indeed has the ad.

It will have...

*5-Disc Set

*The Director's Cut + Black Freighter

*Audio Commentary by Zack Snyder and Dave Gibbons

*+2 Hours of Bonus Content including the documentary Under The Hood.

*The Complete Motion Comics

Based on this, I imagine it will likely look like this...

Disc 1: Ultimate Cut
Disc 2: Director's Cut
Disc 3: Bonus Content + Digital Copy
Disc 4: Motion Comic Disc 1
Disc 5: Motion Comic Disc 2

I'm hoping I'm wrong because I noticed they omitted the "Ultimate Watchmen Experience" which is essentially the Maximum Movie Mode from the Blu-Ray edition on a separate standard DVD, which was included in the Amazon exclusive Owl Ship gift set. I'd love to see it included for the Ultimate Set.

To soften the blow, you can use the enclosed ad to receive $10 the immediate price...

Odds are though it will be $70, considering the last ultimate DVD set released by WB was Blade Runner, which was also 5 Discs.

I ordered the 2 disc Blu-ray. It's possible that I Watch it again and decide not to keep that. No chance I buy a 5 disc set.

I actually ended up ordering the Amazon exclusive owl set. And I am SO glad I did!

There was no way i was going to be able to wait till december for this movie in blu. And not only is it a 3 disc set with great features (i love features)....but the owl packaging is beyond words. It is at the McFarlane level of craftsmanship and, not only is it beautifully sculpted and painted, but for 1(the disc casings inside the base are actually 'reverse' spring loaded. So when you go to put them in, they end up pulling themselves in own their own and 2(the owl ship is not only detachable from the base (yes, so you can play with it lol!; but it also has a button sculpted into the top which turns on the lights and sound. Super powerful (must be LEDS) lights from the headlights on the owl and blue LEDS for every thruster on the ship. The sound is of it flying.

Bad. Ass.

DaMovieMan:

The 5 disc craziness is not out yet, no. The owl ship is a 3 disc set offered only by Amazon.

I wasn't sure if I was going to like the edition coming out in december because it is going to have the black freighter animated movie woven into it. And after watching this edition with 30 mins extra footage, that alone makes it a very long watch. Still super great, but long.

As it should be :D I can't wait for that 5 disc one then. The Black Freighter has great comparisons with the characters of Adrian and Rorschach so it works great and should in the film as well

I'm not crazy about the coverart too but I'm still gonna buy that sucker (even if I already have to director's cut BluRay:D).

The Director's Cut was a massive disappointment. Adding in an only adequate cartoon will not make it better, only worse.

So I have read the graphic novel before but have yet to see any version of the movie. So my question is should i wait for this cut with the black freighter woven in or should i just watch the director's cut. thanks

I would probably just wait for the Ultimate Cut in December. It will be the closest thing to reading the comics that will be available.

I have been waiting to buy this movie specifically for this cut of the film. Watching the awesome 'Black Freighter' woven into the film will definitely give it more of that comic book vibe!
