View Full Version : 2002: What Films to cross $100 Million?

Well, With so many promising blockbusters to come this year I wonder how many movies will be able to cross the $100 million barrier. In 2001 there were 20 films that did it. While 22 movies crossed the magical mark in the year 2000.
So far in 2002 we have 5 movies who did it. With many spring releases failling slightly short of (Panic Room, Blade 2 and The Scorpion King):
Ice Age - Spider-Man - Star Wars- Episode II: Attack of the Clones - The Sum of All Fears - Scooby-Doo
So, what are the other 2002 releases you think will cross the $100M? My list:

The Bourne Identity
Miniority Report
Lilo and Stitch
The Road to Perdition
Men In Black II
Stuart Little II
Austin Powers: Goldmember
Signs
xXx
Red Dragon
The Tuxedo
Harry Potter and the Chambers Of Secrerts
The Lord of the Rings: Two Towers
Bond 20
Gangs of NY
Reign of Fire
Catch Me If You Can

This makes 22 of them. What do you think?

Star Trek Nemesis could do it... the trailer was pretty cool.

I guess it will do well. It will open strongly but fade fast. As usual fans will rush to see it in the first weekend and it should witness big drops. But not to reach $100m, i THINK.

I think that little fantasy film opening in December has a good shot. You know, the one about the short people with hairy feet.

I don't think these will break $100 mil.:
Stuart Little II
The Tuxedo
Reign of Fire

Might break it, very close:
Gangs of NY
xXx

Bond 20, Harry Potter 2 and the next installment of Lord Of The Rings all are very likely, if not definite, to break $100 million. xXx and Gangs Of NY might come close, I don't know. I want Reign Of Fire and The Tuxedo to go well, but I am not sure if they will break the 100 million dollar mark. Hopefully they will still be successful.

You're talking about Men in Black II, right? That doesn't open in December, it opens tomorrow!

WTF?!!! Reign of Fire to cross $100 million? I don't think so! Sorry guys, that's just my opinion. It looks like crap. I think Halloween:Resurrection will blow it away. (I know Halloween won't cross 100 millon but it will still blow that crap movie away!)

ARE YOU KIDDING??? The Wild Thornberrys crossing 100 million, you may have misread the subject, you probably thought it said, cross 1.00 million which in other words is 1 mill, or 1 dollar even, It will barely cross 3 I think.
No way SL2 will cross 100 mill. cause it looks boring, and the hype seems bad, and Reign of fire, wont do well either, cause not too many people want to see it. Remember Ravenous, similiar movie w/o the dragons.

In the very near future, I definitely think that Austin Powers in Goldmember will break the $100M barrier fairly quickly as will Signs. I'm also guessing that Reign of Fire will do well. Personally, my money is going to the first two before the latter so hopefully I'll add a little cashola to the final totals.

Later in the year, The Two Towers and Gangs of New York (if it finally comes out) will both cross the threshold.

Come on now. Anything is possible. Some of those films you all think have no shot at breaking $100 million could just do so. Audiences are just too damn fickle. You are most likely right, but never say it's not possible!

Spy Kids 2???? mmmm! don't think it'll make it. People have realized that it was so much buzz for the first one. I mean it was very overrated. The trailers are nothing so special. I think it'd do something like 75-90 Million.

Oops! My hopes for REIGN OF FIRE to cross the $100 million mark has faded faster than i expected. I thought it would open bigger ($25-30M)and show "some" legs.
It won't, i guess http://www.joblo.com/ubb/frown.gif

Films that have made it (according to World-Wide Box Office as of 7/24/02):
1. $402.8 Spider-Man (A)
2. $295.6 Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones (A+)
3. $175.9 Ice Age (A-)
4. $159.9 Men in Black II (B)
5. $148.5 Scooby Doo (C)
6. $129.2 Lilo & Stitch (A+)
7. $118.1 Minority Report (A+)
8. $117.0 The Sum of All Fears (B-)
9. $108.8 Mr. Deeds (B-)
10. $105.7 The Bourne Identity (A-)

What I think will make it (remainder of year):
"Austin Powers in Goldmember"
"Signs"
"xXx"
"Red Dragon"
"Treasure Planet"
"Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets"
"Die Another Day"
"Star Trek: Nemesis"
"Solaris"
"The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers"
"Catch Me if You Can"

When all is said in done (meaning, including 2003 grosses for Holiday flicks), I predict the top 10 moneymakers of 2002 will be:
1. "Spider-Man"
2. "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers"
3. "Star Wars: Episode II- Attack of the Clones"
4. "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets"
5. "Austin Powers in Goldmember"
6. "Men in Black II"
7. "Ice Age"
8. "xXx"
9. "Red Dragon"
10. "Scooby Doo"

Well I don't think LOTR will make it again to the $300 million mark. No Way it will make more than Episode II. The big film will be Chamber of Secrets. I think it's going to outgross "Philosopher's Stone".. It looks amazing. The book is GREAT.
