View Full Version : The Book of Eli

The plot does not sound interesting.
A post-apocalyptic tale, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind.
This movie will probably suck. It sounds like The Mummy or Van Helsing. The trailer doesn't seem too interesting, either.
Thoughts?

Looks great visually. Otherwise though, it looks like crap.

Good actors with a shitty storyline, but looks great from the way its shot. Its enough to check out just for Oldman. A release in January is clear enough it'll suck.

I don't think the plot sounds that bad. Plus, with the actors involved it gives me hope that there is more to the story. And the action and visual's in the trailer look amazing (Denzel whoopin some MAJOR ass, and that one fight scene looks like it might be done in one take with a stationary camera catchin the action). Overall, I'm excited!

This looks like it go either way for me. I love a good post-apocalyptic movie, so I'll probably wait for positive word of mouth before checking this out.

The story is pretty bare but I think it looks great and it's damn well worth it just to see Washington and Oldman square off vs each other.

This looks like an awesome post apocalyptic action flick. I can't wait!

That trailer really didn't sell anything to me but that Denzel is going to kick serious ass. I am very overall "meh" about it.

Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. It just doesn't get better than that.
Trailer was effing awesome! I can't wait to see this. Definitely one of the movies I'm looking forward to most in 2010!

Cinematically, it looks like a giant pile of 'meh'. Also, based on the trailer, Washington moved way to slow to realistically take out all of those guys. Now i know why they quick cut action scenes with stars in the lead.

Ray Stevenson's in it, so of course I'm looking forward to it. :D

Good thing I found a thread for this one.. as I watched the trailer (http://www.craveonline.com/) here
http://www.craveonline.com/entertainment/film/video/the-book-of-eli-68595
seems to be a little interesting but when Denzell Washington's name
appeared, it caught my attention and as if promising me that this could be
a great film....

Did nobody else get a Fallout vibe from this?
http://wearemoviegeeks.com/wp-content/book-of-eli-1.jpghttp://www.file-extensions.org/imgs/app-picture/3818/fallout-3.jpg
Or maybe a Fallout meets Road Warrior vibe?
I think it looks like fun.

I got a Fallout vibe also, and I thought the movie looked amazing. Great visuals and I'm always up for a good post-apocalyptic movie, especially when it doesn't involve zombies. Reminded me of The Road a bit, and hopefully it's better than the usual January movie

I know January and February are not usually well regarded months, but I seem to recall a long while back Denzel Washington did Fallen which came out in February and I liked that movie a lot.
Hopefully it's better than Gary Oldman's last January movie though which was dreary and dreadful and boring "horror" flick The Unborn.

Denzel Washington is the hero. Gary Oldman is the villain.
I'm there.
And that was before I saw the trailer. Loved the trailer.
In what way does this sound like The Mummy or Van Helsing? What an odd comparison.
Looks good. The Hughes Brothers have been away too long, and I'm glad to see them at the helm of such a potentially huge project.
January isn't necessarily indicative of a film's quality. This past January saw Gran Torino and Taken go into wide release in January. 2008 had Cloverfield and Rambo.
Not the greatest movies, and of course everyone has their own opinions, but all of those were pretty damn entertaining.
watched the trailer, i feel like ive seen this 100 times, and i dont buy Denzel in this Will Smith/I am Legend role.

This film might be the ultimate movie dump month breaker. With the nuclear threat going on in North Korea moviegoers wanna see this film and prepare if the shit hits the fan.

They'll certainly get an idea of what it might be like after the shit hits the fan, it takes place 30 years after an apocalypse.

Watching this film only because Gary Oldman plays a villain. Nothing else interests me, Denzel started to bore me to death, story wise it seems very recycled and nothing really pulled me in from the trailer.
Gary Oldman playin the main villain? I'm there.

Looks dull. The Hughes Brothers have done nothing worthwhile since their debut.
From Hell was a pile o' shit. Dead Presidents was ten movies in two hours.
They ARE capable, but after nine years they come back with this derivative nonsense, eh?

Looks like a blast to me. I'm a sucker for post-apocalyptic movies and Denzel looks badass in this. Plus Gary Oldman plays a villain like nobodies business. I'm there.

can't understand the hate as i think it looks like fun. the hughes bro's have done the odd really impressive scene and i have never really disliked any of their films. it definitely will not be the best film of the year but i'm sure it will provide a few laughs a la taken

Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman is more than enough for me to purchase a ticket to see The Book of Eli. It looks pretty cool. However, I'm very concerned about the early January release date. Studios always release horrible films during the first two months of the year. I guess we'll all find out in January. I hope it's good.

Sometimes a bare storyline is better than a complex one.
I'm a total sucker for post-apocalyptic fare. I just can't stay away. With that cast and this trailer, you won't exactly have to drag me to this one, though.

Looks like I Am Legend.
How?
There is one person with a dog in I Am Legend, unless you count the thousands/millions of zombie-like creatures that only come out at night. There are two big name stars in Book of Eli alone: Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. I Am Legend takes place in an empty New York City; this looks like it takes place in a western.
I can see some comparisons to plenty of other movies . . . I don't see how I Am Legend is one of them.

This looks like a Fallout Tribute.

I'll also be seeing both, and while The Road is probably the better film, I think this one is going to be waaaaay more fun.

I'm officially excited for this movie now.
Denzel being a hardass, Oldman playing a villain, and Mila Kunis looking fierce.
FireCaptain4
09-26-2009, 01:43 AM
I really don't think we have to worry about a Fallout 3 movie anymore. This IS Fallout the movie. Or, pretty much anyway. Kunis looks gorgeous and Oldman will undoubtedly scare the crap out of me, yet again, as the villain.
It just looks like some of the backdrops in the new trailer aren't quite finished. That, and the metal music irritated me for some reason. Still excited, though.

I have a feeling that regardless of whether the game had anything to do with any choices made in any of these movies, Fallout is going to continue to be compared to every single fucking post apocalyptic movie ever made from now on for some stupid reason. First Terminator Salvation, now Book of Eli and that Road movie.
Perhaps, and maybe I'm crazy for thinking this, the reason that seems to be the case is because FALLOUT 3 was based around other post apocalyptic movies over time (there's even references to them in the game itself) and this movie, like that game, is building upon them.

There's something kind of corny about the trailer. I'm reminded a little of The Quick and The Dead.
I'll still check it out in theaters as long as it gets at least average reviews just because I get Denzel kicking more ass.

I didn't quite get that vibe in The Road.
As far as Terminator Salvation goes, some similarities aren't hard to see:

Book of Eli sounds pretty much like it would an expansion pack for Fallout 3 where your mission is to obtain and protect that book.

I'm afraid I don't see a similarity here outside of the barrel of a weapon. The very same weapon you can see in many other movies... Predator, for example.
Oh, and one of my friends (The biggest Fallout 3 obsessed guy I've ever met) squealed with glee when we saw the Road trailer only to be disappointed when the title screen hit because he was sure it was Fallout 3 the movie up until that point.

Meh, looks OK. Definitely not a high priority for me though. Denzel needs to start choosing some better work. Save for American Gangster and Man on Fire his performances have been pretty dull this decade. I guess this is a slight change of pace, but he doesn't look like he's putting a lot of effort into this film based on the trailer.
And BTW, The Road has very little in common with Fallout 3.

Wow, I'd really like to ask him why he felt that way. Granted, The Road trailer gives off a more action-packed impression than the source material allows, but Fallout and The Road are very, very different tales/universes/perspectives on a post-apocalyptic world. If the trailer would have featured mutated monsters and bulky metal-soldiers (Terminator Salvation), I would kind of understand.

I definitely love Denzel and Oldman, there has to be some good twist in the story.
I can see myself checking this film out, Plot seems boring but only because not a lot has been exposed, it should be good.

As you said, Fallout 3 is littered with movie references. Because of my newfound love of The Road Warrior, I definitely recognized a number of references to the movie, such as the Scoped Magnum, the Sawed-Off Shotgun, the look of the Raiders, and you even have one of the little kids refer to the hero as "humungous" accidently. The ads also had a similar "Hero and his Dog" image.
Am I nuts or should a studio just go ahead for a Fallout movie at this point?

Post-apocalyptic material has existed before Mad Max and Fallout.
This movie looks slick though. I'm a fan of Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, and Mila Kunis.

looks like the easiest acting gig for Denzel, people run at him, he waves his arms and they fall. He has sun glasses on the whole time, like the matrix sequels makes it feel like a commercial more than a film.
this looks terrible.
