The title is written in blood. This means that it is badass.

Yes, it's been a looooooooooooooooooong time coming, but it's finally here - THE TRAILER FOR NINJA ASSASSIN (http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2009/07/23/ninja-assassin-exclusive-trailer-debut-filled-with-badass-displays-of-real-ultimate-power/) due out this Winter.

Directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta), produced by Joel Silver and the Wachowski Brothers, and the Wachowskis also directed the action scenes.

Early word is that the action in this film makes Kill Bill look like a Teletubbies tickling contest. Which I hear can get pretty dangerous.

Bring it on.

Long time no see Max. Hopefully this post is an indication that you will be making some more posts in the near future, as I am interested to hear your take on the good, the bad and the ugly of the recent summer flicks.

I am definitely looking forward to this movie. Sounds like a ton of fun.

excessive CGI like that takes out the thrill of martial arts, imo. Looks run of the mill.

I backing up AP here.

The CGI didn't let the trailer give me the tingles that martial arts films usually do. Also, the quality of the trailer online might have something to do with it because I had a hard time making out some scenes. Then again, I have piss-poor eyesight without contacts, so there's that.

I'm still excited, but I was a little letdown by the trailer.

Damn, did that trailer emphasize the magic of ninja stars or didn‘t it?!

Cool. Could be worth seeing on the big screen, but i get the home viewing vibe from this just from all the other ninja genre flicks i've watched. Not a bad thing, i know they are sort of going for that vibe, but theatre wise probably not the best decision.

As much as I'd love to, I've been house-bound since some minor surgery on my foot. The only Summer movie I got to see before that was Star Trek. My brother and sister also dragged me to Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince recently while I was limping, but that's about it :D

Thanks for the warm welcome though :)

I am definitely looking forward to this movie. Sounds like a ton of fun.

Indeed.

And regarding the CGI, I think it was probably necessary since some of those weapons look mega fucking dangerous (did you SEE that crazy ass blade being whipped around on the end of a chain?!). Plus the Wachowskis (who directed the action scenes) tend to like controlling each and every frame of their shots. Their obsessed with perfect composition. So I suspect the CGI helps in that aspect too.

Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but do some of those shots look like they've been tailored for a 3-D format...?

PS
Either my eyes need cleaning out or I actually saw Rain fighting a TELEPORTING NINJA in that trailer...!

Looks like a standard straight to video fare.

Yeah, I think it has a certain B-movie-ish vibe, which I gather to be somewhat deliberate upon reading McTeigue's interviews about his intentions for the style of the film. However, the visuals and overall aesthetic seem far too luscious for a DTV movie:

The movie itself looks alright, but the pointless cgi was terrible. Why would they ruin what looks like solid martial arts action with so much obvious cgi?

max314
07-24-2009, 12:15 PM
I tend to find I'm less fussy about CGI than most people - there are plenty of other practical effects that look just as fake. But you just ignore them and suspend your disbelief for a little while.

Watching the trailer, I thought the CGI was a perfect way to accent intensely well-choreographed martial arts to create precision composition. I think combining physical stunts with digital effects is a great way to create an incredible new breed of action imagery.

Personally, I think it looks amazing and can't wait till November.

By the way, Alex Billington of FirstShowing.Net said that he "fucking loved" Ninja Assassin after seeing it at a secret screening at this year's Comic-Con, saying it was one of the bloodiest things he'd ever seen.

He couldn't divulge any more info on the movie, but I guess that counts as a positive review, right?

It might be a fun time at the movies, but I completely agree about the horribly shitty CGI possibly ruining a lot of it.

It looks like the CGI is just lazy and merely there to add to the coolness of some scenes by also:
Being safer to film
Not having to have people performing the moves/stunts to be as precise and skilled

And it would just annoy me because bad CGI always comes across to me as a way of cutting corners and takes away a lot of the immersion that comes from a quality viewing experience.

What I really want would be for them to cut back on the cheese...I mean come on how many times do we have to see some shitty looking CGI weapon go all slow-mo and wizz past the camera?...I mean the film looks like it might be a decent popcorn flick but it just feels like its trying to has style just for the sake of style...Hell I could be wrong and the movie could kick some major ass but from the look of the trailer I am going to have to pass

Saw the trailer for this at the theater today, and I must say this:

UNDERWHELMING!

I know this is 2009, and it's "the way things are", but, "Holy CGi Batman!" Jumbled fucking mess of shaky-cam, and shiny CG action tools (aka Swords, Shuriken and Kama). When it was done, I openly said, "Under-fucking-whelming!", to which the guy behind me said, "No shit!". Glad there are other people as jaded as me. :p

Just another movie that fell off my radar.

Not sure why people are already calling this "shaky-cam" and shit. If you've seen Vendetta, you know exactly how the action is going to look. I doubt McTeague changed up his entire directorial style.

Rain's character is bleeding and struggling to stay on his feet as he runs through traffic, so the camera does shake a little, but it seems to add to the energy of the scene instead of detracting.

There's a lot of running in the clip, but what little martial arts we see appears to be pretty awesome. Just a taste of what's to come, I'm sure.

Seriously though, there have been some positive reviews. Obviously, the script isn't amazing (it was written in 53 hours!!! :D ) but it is gorgeously shot and the action scenes are stellar stuff.

Good to see the WBs getting back on the horse after Speed Racer, a film i still think is great, too bad it still doesn't have a proper blu ray release.

While I see what you are trying to say (CHUD is not exactly a reliable place), that's kind of a bad example since most critics liked Burn After Reading.

As for Ninja Assassin, I still think it looks pretty entertaining, but from what I've heard it is pretty bad and relies thoroughly on CGI and violence for its entertainment value. To be honest, I'm getting a bit tired of films simply relying on CGI and action to entertain. I may still check out Ninja Assassin eventually, but The Road is the clear choice on that Thanksgiving weekend.

Well, I guess that tells us something about critics then, eh? ;)

As for Ninja Assassin, I still think it looks pretty entertaining, but from what I've heard it is pretty bad and relies thoroughly on CGI and violence for its entertainment value.

I'm hearing the opposite from average Joe Schmoes like us, as opposed to them critic people thingies :D.

I'm hearing the film is rapaciously entertaining, and that ALL the action is based on tremendously physical stuntwork. The only CGI is the stylised blood and weapons, which are only used to augment the action at certain points and looks stunning.

To be honest, I'm getting a bit tired of films simply relying on CGI and action to entertain. I may still check out Ninja Assassin eventually, but The Road is the clear choice on that Thanksgiving weekend.

I'm getting tired of action movies that don't have the balls to go all the way with the 'action' part of their promise.

I can't wait for an action movie that actually delivers hard 'R' action. Like an old school, hardcore, '80s B-movie...delivered with A-grade production values and the Matrix maestros driving the action scenes.

I can't wait :D

You are correct, of course. But I think saying they were 'only' producers slightly underrates the degree of their creative involvement. It infers that they just sat around gushing money or something, when interviews by people other than the Wachowskis suggest that this wasn't the case.

In actuality, they spent significant time creating the story (as evidenced by interviews with writer J. Michael Straczynski), creating Raizo's iconic chain-blade (as evidenced by interviews with stunt man Chad Stahelski), and blocking all of the major action set pieces (as evidenced by interviews with James McTeigue).

This is very much a Wachowski picture, albeit a 'second tier' Wachowski picture, in which they're just having fun messing around, experimenting with new visual ideas.

McTeigue may be responsible for the bulk of it, but the Wachowskis' fingerprints are all over it.

PS
It was the Wachowskis who blocked the climactic knife fight in V for Vendetta as well. They were uncredited second unit on that film. And, as you know, they also wrote the picture (whose screenplay I've read, and the Wachowskis are so specific in their phrasing that the script basically directs itself - no diss to McTeigue, but it's the truth :D ).

But that's just what the Wachowskis are like. Humble, down to earth. Not bothered with saying, 'Hey, look what we did!' and happy to just...y'know...just do it.

Unfortunately, that is a distinct possibility, yes.

However, I'm hoping that the bulk of Twilight fans who contributed to New Moon's record breaking weekend will have seen the movie, and that 2012's flow has suitably simmered down to give Ninja Assassin some breathing room.

Personally, I'm not so sure about Summer or Spring release, if only because there are so many larger, more well known movies coming out during that time. But I completely understand your concern.

EDIT:
I was wondering if some of our American friends could tell us what the publicity has been like in the US over the last few days? What is the awareness level for this movie at? Are people talking about it, etc?

I've only seen a handful of TV commercials for it - one that starts with "Only one ninja was hurt during the making of this commercial. The rest were killed." (or something close to that). I love the dry (witty) sense of humour, but it's a strange way of selling an expensive action pic to "mainstream" audiences. WITH HUMOUR!

As much as I hate to say this but I also fear this. It's gonna up against Old Dogs and Fantastic Mr Fox. Plus there's still New Moon and Christmas Carol. I don't think Thanksgiving weekend was the right time to release this kind of film. Especially if they wanted it to do well. I fear this may be 2009's Grindhouse.

He seems hung up on the ninjas not being as strong as he'd like.

Of course, Raizo has to be able to dispatch them with relative ease, so giving them an expendable Imperial Stormtrooper-esque status is probably necessary.
