A hysterical and incisive satire on the machinations of war and the petty people behind it In The Loop is not so subtle send-up of exactly how we got into the Iraq War. Of course Iraq nor any real people are mentioned but the film doesn't do anything to hide that.

Its hard to give a real plot summary considering the dozens of main characters and side characters who zip through this film. To put it simply though it follow a government man named Simon in England who puts his foot in his mouth by calling rumors of an upcoming war being unforseeable. The vague verbal gaff leads to leads to panic, deceit, lies, and a lot of comedy as everyone tries to deal with the increasing political ramifications of that event.

The film is perfectly cast. I didn't reconize many of the actors but every single person, even if he had a few lines, made a completely indelible impression. The movie is well-written and very funny but dont let that fool you. At its center this is a bleak film about a bunch of horrible people that use the very real subject of war as playing ground for abuses against each others.

I should say though this is film that you have to pay attention to. The conversation is fast and furious and it is very easy to miss the many nuances of the constantly overlapping conversations.

Anyway great film go see it.

Reviews have been stellar but the trailer did NOTHING for me.

It's written and directed by the genius that is Armano Iannucci so I don't doubt that it's going to be incredibly intelligent and funny.

I eagerly anticipate the DVD release.

In the Loop - 8/10

This is a very funny, vulgar and intelligent film. There are a lot of characters and a lot going on, but by the end of the film it all came together and it was fairly easy to follow. Didn't recognize many of the actors, but they were all great, especially Peter Capaldi who was a fucking hoot. The screenplay is very well written, filled with plenty of hilarious dialogue. I definitely recommend it.

The following are just a few of the many great quotes in the film:

"Diarrhea? This is the minister for international development. He should be talking about food parcels, not fuckin’ ass sprayin’ mayhem."

"Do you know what you sounded like? You sounded like a fuckin’ Nazi Julie Andrews!"

"You are a boring F, star, star, CUNT!"

"Allow me to pop a jaunty little bonnet on your purview and ram it up your shitter with a lubricated horse cock!"

This movie eats comedies like The Hangover for breakfast. A comedy with a plot, lightning pace, interesting characters and situations, intelligent biting satire and relevance, actual quotable lines, not a hint of dumbing things down and a ridiculous amount of rewatch value? What a revolutionary concept.

I'm glad the show was translated over successfully. Armando Iannucci is a genius comedy writer but he (along with Chris Morris who I'd say is a better satirist) never did anything that could appeal outside of the UK.

So yeah, what everyone else said is true. It's really funny, Malcolm basically owns the movie (if IFC played their cards right even with their awful marketing they could have a good shot at an adapted screenplay nod along with a supporting actor nom for Capaldi). My only complaint with it was that it was obvious how the writers couldn't get out of the TV mindset. The whole thing felt like a few TV episodes edited together. Also the plot felt kind of non-existant at points but the writing was great enough to not make that a huge issue. Hopefully it'll become a sleeper hit, it's a movie that begs to be quoted repeatedly after watching it.
